Recycling Corenso products and processes are based on the principle of recycling. Right from the beginning the company has recycled multi-material packaging for use as coreboard raw material and used the coreboard produced to make cores and tubes that can be recycled yet again. Corenso has itself developed an advanced recycling process that enables complete use to be made of all the components of multi-layer packaging: fibre, plastic and aluminium. Corenso s coreboard mill in Varkaus takes advantage of this innovative technology to separate out packaging material components and use the fibre for coreboard, the plastic for production energy, and the aluminium for recycling in the metal and chemical industries. Corenso s coreboard mills in Finland, France and the USA have a total annual recycling capacity of 350 000 tonnes. Corenso offers solutions for recycling cores and reel wrappings for the benefit of the company s customers and the core end-users. Corenso products and processes help solve environment problems in important practical ways: Reducing pressure on landfill sites Promoting selective usage of primary and secondary fibres Conserving non-renewable energy resources Corenso s own products are recyclable 12
Research and Development Corenso s product development is based on customer needs. These are systematically discovered and explored by our Business Intelligence functions, making use of the broad customer interface provided by the global sales network, technical services and advanced customer-facing R&D. This ensures that product development stems from rigorous research into the whole supply chain, covering raw materials, coreboard, cores, and applications. Corenso s close co-operation with its owner companies also guarantees the rapid and reliable flow of information on emerging needs encountered in printing plants. As an integral part of the group s in-house research and development, Corenso has created a specialist R&D network that includes Stora Enso s Mönchengladbach research unit with its world-class expertise in winding technology. Other important members of the network include universities, research institutes, and manufacturers and suppliers of equipment and chemicals. A milestone of our recent development is the Long Core Tester, which has been implemented in Corenso Elfes, Germany. This high-tech tester simulates the critical speed conditions of cores up to 4,6 m in length. Corenso continuously develops the testing methods and equipment to be able to simulate the actual machinery and conditions of end users as accurately as possible. 13
