Page 2 of 5 I. Principle (Purpose): A. This SOP shall define the procedure that is to be followed in the event of a medical emergency or work place injury that occurs in the BCP. II. Role: A. All BSTP SRF Laboratory employees are required to follow the guidelines outlined in this SOP. III. Glossary, Abbreviations, or Definitions: A. Refer to BSTP SRF 97 Glossary, Abbreviations, Acronyms and Definitions. IV. Indications (Policy): A. This policy applies to all workers in the BSTP SRF. B. The policy set here does not apply to events where bloodborne pathogen occupational exposure has occurred. If you believe exposure has occurred, please follow BSTP SRF67 BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE. C. University of Kentucky Workers Care is a managed care system for workers compensation. To have your medical care paid for in a work-related injury, you MUST use an approved doctor, and only use an emergency department in a life-threatening situation. V. Specimens (Samples): N/A VI. Materials, Reagents, Equipment, Safety Precautions: A. Use universal precautions including gloves, and additional PPE as necessary, when performing basic first aid. B. First Aid Kit, which can be located on the wall shelf in the rear office of RM 219 and Combs 113.

UK Workers Care may provide additional documentation to the injured worker that is to be given to his or her supervisor. C. BSTP SRF 20 Event Sheet (BSTP SRF Server, Quality Folder). VIII. In the event of a life-threatening injury call 911 or go to the UK Emergency Room. Your supervisor will call the 24-hour UK Workers Care access line at 1-800-440-6285 to report the incident. B. For a work place injury that does not require immediate ER treatment:-. 1. Contact your supervisor to report the incident. Your supervisor will provide basic first aid or help determine if you need additional medical care. A good guide for basic first aid can be found at - http://ehs.uky.edu/ohs/labexposureprotocol.pdf. a) If medical care is required proceed to a UK Workers Care network doctor for evaluation and treatment. b) If your supervisor is unavailable, report to the next supervisor in the chain of command. 2. The supervisor is to record event on BSTP SRF Event Sheet.
