How to Encourage a Brother or Sister in Christ 3 John 1-6a Introduction: We come to the third and last epistle of John. Even though it may look longer in our English texts than does 2 John, 3 John is actually the shortest book in the Greek New Testament. In 3 John, we are told principally about three people: Gaius in verses 1-8; Diotrephes in verses 9-11; and Demetrius in verse 12. As far as a direction for where we are headed in these series of messages in 3 John, I plan to preach from verses 1-6a this morning on how to encourage a brother or sister in Christ; then we ll cover verses 6b-8 next time on how to treat a Christian worker, such as a pastor, missionary, or evangelist; then we ll cover this wicked man Diotrephes in verses 9-11; and finally, a message on faithful Demetrius, plus John s closing comments, from verses 12-15. For this morning, I would like to draw your attention to verses 1-6a of 3 John and the subject of how to encourage a brother or sister in Christ: The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth. Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are, who testified to your love before the church. Even though the apostle John is encouraging a specific person, Gaius, someone that John knew very well in the 1 st Century Church, this is a text I believe

2 we could all use as a template on how to encourage another Christian brother or sister. I see four specific ways one could encourage a brother or sister in Christ from these verses: I. Affirm Your Love for Them (v. 1) II. Pray for Their Physical and Spiritual Health (v. 2) III. Express Your Joy for Their Obedience (vv. 3-4) IV. Commend Them for Their Faithful Ministry Efforts Toward Others (vv. 5-6a) I. Affirm Your Love for Them (v. 1) The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth. The first thing John does to encourage his friend, Gaius, is to tell those to whom he, John is writing, how much he loves his brother Gaius, in Christ. Notice that the elder, John, refers to Gaius as his beloved. He repeats it in verse 2: Beloved. He even repeats it a third time in verse 5: Beloved. He even tells his readers very directly in verse 1 that he loves Gaius in truth. So, four separate times, John endearingly affirms his love for his Christian friend. They must have had a very warm and wonderful relationship, a relationship based upon their common foundation of truth! I wish we knew more about who this man, Gaius really was. There are other New Testament references to men named Gaius (a Gaius from Derbe who was a traveling companion of Paul, Acts 19:29; Acts 20:4; and another Gaius which Paul mentions in 1 Corinthians 1:14 & also in Romans 16:23). This may be at least two or three different men named Gaius, so it must have been a fairly common name. We have no reason to believe that John s Gaius is Paul s Gaius. Therefore, we have at least 3 or 4 different men named Gaius in the New Testament. Unfortunately, we have nothing more to go on except what John says about this Gaius here in 3 John.

3 What John does say though, is that he loves Gaius deeply, and that would no doubt surely be a tremendous encouragement to him! I know it would be an encouragement to me and I suspect it would be to you too! It isn t enough that fellow Christians assume that you love them; you must affirm your love for them by explicitly expressing it to them! Whether you use terms of endearment, like beloved, as John does here, or you specifically tell people you love them, it is an important element in how to encourage a brother or sister in Christ! Do you express your love for fellow believers? How do you do so? Are the believers around you encouraged with your expressions of love toward them? Do they know that you love them? How do they know? If there is any question in their minds, encourage them by telling them of your love and showing tangibly your love for them! II. Pray for Their Physical and Spiritual Health (v. 2) Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. The second way you can encourage your fellow brothers and sisters is to pray for their physical and spiritual health. Please notice that the apostle John prays that because of his love for Gaius, he wants him therefore to prosper ( that all may go well with you ), first in this obviously general sense, and then he adds more specifically that Gaius would be in good health, even as it goes well with his soul. It could be that this was a wishful prayer with John not having any specific reason to be concerned about Gaius health, or it could be that word had reached John that his friend s health was not so good. If this is the case, John prays for his good health (Gk: ὑγιαίνω). In some contexts, this Greek word meant to be mentally sound, or to be well-grounded, or even to be correct or orthodox in one s teachings, but here it means of course to be of good health physically. It s the Greek word out of which we receive

4 the English word, hygiene. John is concerned that Gaius be of good physical conditioning for the work of ministry that he has to do. John goes on to pray also that Gaius would be well of soul. Soul in the Greek is ψυχή, which is where we derive the word psychology and John prays for Gaius spiritual life, that is, the core of his being and relationship with God. Certainly John wants him to be physically healthy, just as you and I would want all our own brothers and sisters in Christ to be physically healthy. But far more important than the issue of our physical health, is the need for our souls to be spiritually rich and healthy! We can spiritually prosper when our health isn t the best; but it is of the utmost importance to never allow our souls to become sick. Whatever would threaten us in either dimension is an opportunity to pray for one another. Danny Akin, in his commentary on this passage (1,2,3 John in The New American Commentary, Nashville: Broadman & Holman Publishers, volume 38, 2001, p. 240), writes: John s prayer-wish should give us pause. What if such a prayer was made to God for me and it was answered? What condition would I find myself in physically and spiritually? Compare your bodily health to your spiritual health. Dare we hope or pray for ourselves or others in this manner? What an encouragement it is when fellow Christians are concerned enough about us that they spend their precious time in prayer for both our physical and spiritual needs! Do you pray for others in these ways? How often do you lift up your brothers and sisters in prayer? Are your prayers balanced between the physical and spiritual dimensions, seeing your prayers for others in the spiritual dimension being the most important? Do you find yourself focusing more of your petitions upon the physical arena of a person s life rather than the spiritual? Or, do you find yourself praying only for the spiritual aspects of a Christian friend and would neglect their physical needs? One sure way to encourage fellow saints is in the

5 area of concerted prayer for both their material and immaterial needs. III. Express Your Joy for Their Obedience (vv. 3-4) For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. The third element of how you can encourage others is to express your joy for their obedience to God. John mentioned in verse 1 that he loves Gaius in truth. He says here in verse 3 that certain fellow Christians who were known to both John and Gaius had been giving testimony to John of Gaius personal commitment to the truth ( the brothers came and testified to your truth ). John then encourages Gaius directly and sincerely and truthfully by saying that he knows him to be walking in the truth. Again, three specific references to Gaius and his commitment to the truth of God: Verse 1 says that Gaius is loved in truth which means in the sphere of truth; Verse 3 says Gaius is given testimony through John by his Christian brothers and sisters as to how he has personally adhered to truth; Verse 3 also says Gaius is encouraged by John himself with a testimonial affirmation that he is walking in the truth ( walking implies that it has been his continuous pattern). I want you to see however that John doesn t just mention these realities; he says he rejoiced greatly and in verse 4, he says: I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. Isn t that precisely what he also said to a whole church in 2 John 4? He wrote them: I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth.

6 1 John 1:3-4 2 John 12 Hebrews 13:17 Philippians 1:3-5 Galatians 4:18-20 There is no greater joy than to see your own physical or spiritual children walking in obedience to the truth!! Do you express your joy for the obedience you see being lived out in the lives of your spiritual children? How much do they hear of your negativity toward them, as over against your joy at their positive steps in Christ? When you see genuine obedience and the positive steps of a pattern of walking in the truth, express your joy to those who are doing so! It may even be one of the things the Lord uses instrumentally to cause further spiritual growth in them! IV. Commend Them for Their Faithful Ministry Efforts Toward Others (vv. 5-6a) Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are, who testified to your love before the church. A fourth and final step in encouraging our brothers and sisters in Christ is to commend them for their faithful efforts toward other believers. John tells Gaius that it is a faithful thing he does in all his various ministry efforts for fellow brothers and sisters who are laboring in the gospel work and who have come to Gaius for help. It is easier to serve those we know and who we readily and easily love and appreciate; it is much more challenging however to reach out in ministry to those who are perfect strangers! Please remember that in the service of the gospel, especially within this 1 st Century context, those who were strangers to Gaius, that is, those whom he had never met yet who were his genuine

7 comrades in the faith, who came to him for help and were now being ministered to by him, with John now hearing from them and who was so encouraged by Gaius outreach to them! What John heard about Gaius was the fact that he was met in his home or church by these Christian strangers, and they were so served by him, that they went right back to John and testified to Gaius love and service! What a remarkable testimony! To Gaius, these men and women were strangers no longer! They were precious brothers and sisters in Christ, and when they had real needs, he loved them with selfless service, and it overwhelmed them! Do you want to see a picture of the opposite? Look at this man Diotrephes in verse 10: He refuses to welcome the brothers, and also stops those who want to and puts them out of the church. These two 1 st Century persons Gaius and Diotrephes couldn t be more opposite! One is very loving and serves complete strangers because they are his true brothers and sisters in Christ, while the other couldn t be more self-centered and refuses to serve the brothers who come by for his help! In fact, in verse 9, John says that Diotrephes loves to put himself first! He doesn t want to serve; he wants to be served and to put himself in the place of preeminence! Where do you fall in that spectrum of responses? Do you desire to love others even complete strangers who are noble Christians who may have needs for a place to stay and/or food to eat? Or do you love the place of preeminence and because of this, do you snub your nose at Christians with real needs? Of course, we must be discerning about those who say they re Christians, including every minister, teacher, evangelist, missionary who comes by but who turn out to be false and deceptive. But remember John has already warned us about them, hasn t he? 1 John 2:19 1 John 5:16

8 2 John 7-9 There are however, faithful preachers, teachers, missionaries, evangelists, and other Christian workers who have genuine needs and we are to take care of them because they are a part of the greater body of Christ. Don t love to be served, but take the initiative to serve: 1 John 1:7-11 1 John 3:16-18 Conclusion: How are you doing in the encouragement business?
