CITING REFERENCES: APA Style (6 th ed.) Andersen Library, UW-Whitewater This guide provides common examples of the APA (American Psychological Association) style for citing source materials based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.), shelved at the Reference Desk (BF76.7 P83 2010). Chapter, section and/or example numbers referring to the Manual are provided for each example. More examples may be found in the Manual and on the APA Style website http://www.apastyle.org. APA style requires that PARENTHETICAL CITATIONS in the text refer to entries on the list of REFERENCES at the end of the paper. The format rules for a bibliography or suggested reading list of materials not referred to in the text of the paper may be found in the Manual. PARENTHETICAL CITATIONS Include the author's surname, if not in the text, and the date. When paraphrasing, the Manual encourages inclusion of a page or paragraph number (section 6.04). Always give page numbers for quotations (section 6.03). When page numbers are unavailable, cite paragraphs if numbered, or, if there are section headings but no paragraph numbers, count to the paragraph number after the heading and include it along with the section heading (section 6.05). Specific parts of a source 6.03 & 6.05 (Csikai & Chaitin, 2006, p. 112) (Golan, Kuchler, & Krissof, 2007, Mandatory Labeling Has Targeted, para. 4) One author 6.11 Kessler (2003) found that among epidemiological samples Early onset results in a more persistent and severe course (Kessler, 2003). Two authors 6.12 as has been shown (Jöreskog & Sörbom, 2007) as Kurtines and Szapocznik (2003) demonstrated Three to five authors. All should be listed the first time mentioned. 6.12 First entry: Kisangau, Lyaruu, Hosea, and Joseph (2007) found Subsequent entry: Kisangau et al. (2007) found Corporate author. List in full. Long names may later be shortened, 6.13 if the abbreviation is well known. (National Institute of Mental Health [NIMH], 2003) (NIMH, 2003) No identified author (including legal materials) 6.15 Cite the first few words of the REFERENCES list entry and include the year. Article citation in parentheses: on free care ( Study Finds, 2007) Book citation, partially in parentheses:- the book College Bound Seniors (2008)

Multiple works by different authors (list in same order as in REFERENCES list) 6.16 Several studies (Miller, 1999; Shafranske & Mahoney, 1998) Multiple works by the same author(s) in one year 6.16 Several studies (Derryberry & Reed, 2005a, 2005b) Email, Interviews, PowerPoints, Lecture Notes 6.20 Include initials. Provide as exact a date as possible. Cite personal communications in text only, NOT in REFERENCES. According to T. K. Lutes (personal communication, April 18, 2001) (V. G. Nguyen, personal communication, September 28, 1998) Secondary source citing primary source 6.17 Include both sources in text. Include only what was read (Nicholson) in REFERENCES. Allport s diary (as cited in Nicholson, 2003) REFERENCES List citations in alphabetical order. List works by the same author in chronological order. List multiple works by the same author in one year alphabetically by title and append letters to the years as in the PARENTHETICAL CITATIONS: Multiple works by the same author(s) in one year example.
