Harry Potter: Lesson Plan Aims: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to know more about Harry Potter and the corresponding books. Materials: Harry Potter book covers, character list and picture matching activity, Harry Potter story summary lesson and Harry Potter quiz. Level: Pre-Intermediate or above Timing: 60-90 Stage Timing Procedure Additional Notes Warmer 5-10 Introduce the topic of the day by playing hangman and try to get students to predict what the words are. Try to get students to guess the following word: Harry Potter. Once students know what the topic of the lesson is, ask them if they have read any of the books and whether they know any of the characters from the stories. Board up any language which emerges. Another way to start the topic is to play the theme music from the film Harry Potter and students have to guess the theme of the day. This stage of the lesson is to interest students in the topic and activate schema. Book Title & Cover Matching 10-15 Ask students if they know any Harry Potter books and whether they can name the books in English. Put any of these of the names on the whiteboard. Tell students that they are going to see different front covers of the Harry Potter books and their titles have been removed. They must work together to decide which titles match with the front covers. Make sure students work in pairs or small groups. If your students are willing, you could also get the blurb from each of the Harry Potter books and ask students to match it to the corresponding front cover. Students learn about the titles of each of the Harry Potter books and match them to their corresponding book. They also could - if they are at an appropriate level - match the blurb from the back of the book to the corresponding front cover. Page 1

Stage Timing Procedure Additional Notes Matching Check 5-10 Once students have finished the matching exercise, check as a whole class for title [and back page blurb] and correct where necessary. Whole class feedback and correction where necessary. Vocabulary Preteaching 10-15 Tell students that most of the language in the books are special and not really English. Ask them if they know any of the special vocabulary (board up some to start some ideas and ask them to continue in small groups): quidditch, muggle, etc. Once you have some ideas on the whiteboard, tell students that there is some more language and you have to match it to the corresponding pictures. Hand out the worksheet and monitor students. Get students to check in pairs before checking as a whole class. Engage students in the language related to Harry Potter and develop interest in some more obscure language. Harry Potter Reading Jigsaw 20-30 Tell students that they are going to read about the biography of Harry Potter but there are two different worksheets with different information missing from the worksheet. Each group should ask the other group to find out the missing information. Board up the following on the board as a demonstration: - Joe Bloggs was born on 5 July 1980 in. - Joe Bloggs was born on in Eastbourne. Ask students what the questions would be for each missing information and write these up on the whiteboard. Then tell students that they must ask the corresponding questions for the missing information about Harry Potter. Monitor students and help them where necessary. Students practice speaking questioning and answering about a jigsaw reading of Harry Potter and his life. Jigsaw Reading Check 5-10 Check the answers as a whole class and get students to write the answers up on the whiteboard. Correct where necessary. A whole class answer check activity. Page 2

Stage Timing Procedure Additional Notes Harry Potter Quiz The correct answers for the quiz are: 1. b 2. a 3. c 4. b 5. a 6. c 7. b 8. c 9. b 10. c 11. a 12. b 13. c 14. b 10 Tell students to put away all the reading and information about Harry Potter in their folders. Once students have put away their work, tell them that they are going to have a quiz about Harry Potter and the books. Put students into two teams and ask them to choose a team name. Once students have chosen a team name, tell them that they are going to work together and write down their answers to the questions. Dictate the questions to the students. Monitor and help where necessary. Check the answers either after each question or at the end of the quiz and place a point for each team to get the correct answer. The team with the most points at the end of the quiz are the winners. Students review language and information read prior to the test. Page 3
