Volley Ball Court Risk Assessment This document is for the use of Lutanda Recreation and Conference Centres only and has been written and designed to ensure the activity is run in the safest possible way. This risk assessment has been written as though the activity were being run by Lutanda staff. If the Volley Ball Court is being used without Lutanda staff present, we assume that the participants understand how to properly and safely use the equipment. If it is used by children, Lutanda requires that there be responsible adult supervision with knowledge of how to facilitate the activity correctly. The ratio for this activity is 1:20 1 instructor to 20 participants + 1 responsible adult for groups under the age of 18. 1 The Participant is the person who participates by playing volley ball. Pregnancy / injuries Pregnant women should seek medical advice before commencing in this activity. People suffering from back and neck pain are advised not to participate as it may aggravate or worsen the injury. Also people suffering broken bones or recovering from surgery are advised to not participate as it may cause further injury and should seek medical advice prior to commencement. Using the equipment Under no circumstance is anyone allowed to use the equipment unattended outside of Lutanda unattended restrictions or without adult supervision. Using the equipment If unsure on appropriate use of equipment, see the Lutanda camp host. Arrangements should be the wrong way made prior to your stay if you require for us to do so. Sun burn / sun stroke Participants are advised to wear hats and sunscreen and appropriate sun safe clothing during the activity. Where practicable during the induction and debrief, the instructor should utilise any shade that is available. Participants are encouraged to bring drink bottles to the activity. Inappropriate footwear All participants are required to wear enclosed shoes that cover the top of the foot. Struck by lightning / This activity is not to run and must be stopped in the event or likely event of a thunder / lightning Not being able to follow instructions If any participant is found to not be cooperating or following safety procedures they will be refused to participate by the instructor. It is up to the individual group and it is their leader s responsibility to supervise this activity and make a judgement on whether people are able to follow instructions. 2 Instructor/Guide is the Toukley Recreation and Conference Centre staff member running the activity. Participants acting in an unsafe manner If participants continue to act in an unsafe manner after 2 warnings the instructor has the authority to close the activity down. If the situation is life threatening the activity will be closed down immediately. The instructor is to be assisted with a responsible adult with groups under the age of 18. Lack of training No instructor will be left to facilitate the activity without being adequately trained and signed off. Struck by lightning / This activity is not to run and must be stopped in the event or likely event of a thunder / lightning Unaware of the client s needs The instructor is to be notified of clients with behavioural difficulties, learning disabilities, or physical disabilities. An instructor trained in the above stated client needs must be present during the running of the activity. 3 Others/Observers are the clients waiting a turn / observing. Not knowing where to wait or stand Participants will be advised by their instructor on where and where not to go during the operation of the activity. Joining in on the No one will be allowed to participate in the activity if they were not present during the activity activity after the induction. If a person/s arrive while the activity is being run, the instructor will show them the induction/safety appropriate place to view the activity where they are out of danger. briefing Sun burn / sun stroke All observers are advised to wear sunscreen and sun safe clothing while at the activity. The instructor is to guide them to an area out of the sun where the can view the activity. Struck by lightning / This activity is not to run and must be stopped in the event or likely event of a thunder / lightning Observers interfering Any person/s watching are asked to wait in the area designated by the instructor. Those with participants observing are not allowed to have play any other ball games so as not to distract the participants or interfere with the activity. If the observers are interfering with the activity the instructor will be forced to shut the activity down. 4 Equipment is the structure and safety equipment used during the operation of the activity. Damaged / broken equipment Deterioration to equipment through weather conditions If the equipment is found to be faulty or damaged the activity will not operate until the problem can be rectified. All structural equipment is designed to be in the weather. If anything is found to have been damaged due to weather it will not be used and will be replaced before commencing the activity. 5 Environment is the activity s impact on the terrain and environment concerning people. Tree limbs falling An arborist is brought in to check the condition of the surrounding trees on a regular basis. Injury due to poor condition and nature of site The activity is maintained by the Lutanda grounds staff. If there are any interferences, such as fallen tree branches, they will be cleared by the facilitator prior to activity commencement.
