THE EPISTLE (For the Thirty first Sunday a er Pentecost) O Lord, save Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance. Unto Thee have I cried, O Lord, my God. The Reading from the First Epistle of St. Paul to St. Timothy. (1:15 17) Timothy, my son, the saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. And I am the foremost of sinners; but I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display His perfect pa ence for an example to those who were to believe in Him for eternal life. To the King of Ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory to the ages of ages. Amen. THE GOSPEL (For the Fourteenth Sunday of Luke) The reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (18:35 43) At that me, as Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was si ng by the roadside begging; and hearing a mul tude going by, he inquired what this meant. They told him, Jesus of Nazareth is passing by. And he cried, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, Son of David, have mercy on me! And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to Him; and when he came near, Jesus asked him, What do you want me to do for you? He said, Lord, let me receive my sight. And Jesus said to him, Receive your sight; your faith has made you well. And immediately he received his sight and followed Him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God. DO YOU KNOW WHY HOMES ARE TO BE BLESSED EVERY YEAR? Blessing homes of Orthodox Chris ans is done each year on or a er the feast of Theophany. This act is the central sign of God's sanc fica on of all things through Christ's baptism in the river Jordan and his epiphany to the world. This may be extended to factories, to one's business or office, and even college dorm rooms. Small churches The family is considered, by the Orthodox faith, to be a small church. The family table is the home altar where the members gather each day to receive their daily bread from God with thanksgiving in the name of Christ. Sanc fica on of the home The sanc fica on of the home takes place with prayer and the sprinkling of holy water. The priest, at this annual visit, asks God to have mercy on the house, to rid it of every evil and to fill if with every blessing. Everyone of the house prays together for the living and the dead of the family, and all who live and have lived in the house. They all sing the hymn of salva on and process from room to room while the priest blesses the house. Prepara on Tradi ons of the ceremony differ according to local custom, but these general guidelines should are observed: A candle with an icon should be placed in a suitable place, such as kitchen or dining room table, or a home altar. Also, a list of first names for whom prayers are to be offered, including members of the family and all those living in the house. The list should have a clear dis nc on between the living and the dead. The Ceremony When the priest comes, all who are present in the house should gather around the icon with the candle. They should, if they are able to join in, say the Trisagion Prayers and sing of the Troparion of the Feast of Epiphany. Then a family member leads the priest through the house with the candle. As he goes, he sprinkles holy water, and prays for a blessing upon each room and the ac vity that goes on there. When they have gone through the en re house, the family gathers again around the table and the priest blesses each person present. Taken from Orthodoxwiki. WHO IS ST GREGORY THE THEOLOGIAN? He was born in 329 in Arianzus, At first he studied in Caesarea of Pales ne, then in Alexandria, and finally in Athens. As he was sailing from Alexandria to Athens, a violent sea storm put in peril not only his life but also his salva on, since he had not yet been baptized. With tears and fervor he besought God to spare him, vowing to dedicate his whole self to Him, and the tempest gave way to calm. In Athens, Gregory met Basil the Great and he became his fellow ascetic, living the monas c life together with him for a me in the hermitages of Pontus. His father ordained him presbyter of the Church of Nazianzus, and St. Basil consecrated him Bishop of Sasima (or Zansima), which was in the archdiocese of Caesarea. About the year 379, St. Gregory came to the assistance of the Church of Constantinople, which had already been troubled for forty years by the Arians; by his supremely wise words and many labors he freed it from the corrup on of heresy. He was elected archbishop of that city by the Second Ecumenical Council, which assembled there in 381, and condemned Macedonius, Archbishop of Constan nople, as an enemy of the Holy Spirit. In the beauty of his wri ngs, he is considered to have surpassed the Greek writers of an quity, and because of his God inspired theological thought, he received the surname "Theologian." Although he is some mes called Gregory of Nazianzus, this tle belongs properly to his father; he himself is known by the Church only as Gregory the Theologian. He is especially called "Trinitarian Theologian," since in virtually every homily he refers to the Trinity and the one essence and nature of the Godhead. WHO ARE THE THREE HIERARCHS? The Three Hierarchs of Eastern Christianity refers to Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian and John Chrysostom. This common feast of these three teachers was ins tuted a li le before the year 1100, during the reign of the Emperor Alexis I Comnenus, because of a dispute and strife that arose among the notable and virtuous men of that me. Some of them preferred Basil, while others preferred Gregory, and yet others preferred John Chrysostom, quarreling among themselves over which of the three was the greatest. Furthermore, each party, in order to dis nguish itself from the others, assumed the name of its preferred Saint; hence, they called themselves Basilians, Gregorians, or Johannites. Desiring to bring an end to the conten on, the three Saints appeared together to the saintly John Mavropous, a monk who had been ordained Bishop of Euchaita, a city of Asia Minor, they revealed to him that the glory they have at the throne of God is equal, and told him to compose a common service for the three of them, which he did with great skill and beauty. Saint John of Euchaita (celebrated Oct. 5) is also the composer of the Canon to the Guardian Angel, the Protector of a Man's Life. In his old age, he re red from his episcopal see and again took up the monas c life in a monastery in Constan nople. He reposed during the reign of the aforemen oned Emperor Alexis Comnenus (1081 1118). From Goarch Sunday January 24, 2016 www.saintgeorgemontreal.org 11

THE SYNAXARION On January 24 in the Holy Orthodox Church, we commemorate our Righteous Mother, Blessed Xenia, the Fool for Christ's sake and Wonderworker of Saint Petersburg. Verses They that are at a loss invoke Blessed Xenia, Who having lost all things, won Christ as her Bridegroom. On the twenty fourth Xenia was in Heaven. Xenia was married to a Colonel named Andrew; when she was 26 years old, her husband died suddenly. Le a childless widow, Xenia gave away all that she had, and vanished from St. Petersburg for eight years to live in a hermitage, learning the spiritual life. When she returned to St. Petersburg, she wore her husband's military clothing, and would answer only to the name of her late husband Andrew. She took up the life of a homeless wanderer, and was abused by many as insane. She bore this with great pa ence, crucifying the carnal mind through the mockery she endured, and praying for her husband's soul. She was given great gi s of prayer and prophecy, and o en foretold things to come. In 1796 she foretold the death of Empress Catherine II. Xenia reposed in peace at age 71 in about the year 1800. Her grave became such a source of miracles, and so many came to take soil from it as a blessing that it was o en necessary to replace the soil. When a stone slab was placed over her grave, this too disappeared over me, piece by piece. Saint Xenia is especially invoked for help in finding employment, lodging, or a spouse. On this day, we also commemorate our Righteous Mother Xenia the merciful of Rome; Hieromartyr Babylas of Sicily; and Venerable Philotheos, founder of Philotheou monastery on Athos. By their holy intercessions, O God, have mercy upon us and save us. Amen.
