PROGRAM IN A BOX TITLE: Super Hero Scavenger Hunt PROGRAM CATEGORY: Game AGES: Ages 8+ (Kids or Teens) LENGTH OF EVENT: Approx. 30 minutes CREATED BY: ACTIVITY SUMMARY: Participants solve superhero riddles to advance from one clue to the next, and then unscramble the letters they have acquired at each station to spell out a secret message. MATERIAL LIST: Non- consumables: Laminated clues (7 of each) Laminated letter puzzle pieces (7 of each) Laminated superhero logo signs Consumables: Super Hero Scavenger Hunt instructions (make copies as needed) Prizes, as chosen by the librarian INSTRUCTIONS: Before the game can begin, 7 clue stations need to be placed throughout the library. All clues are designed to lead participants to specific places in the library. When all pieces are collected, the letters can be unscrambled to spell out Power Up. (I ve included more than the required number of clues so that each library can tailor the game to best fit their space. Choose any 7 clues.) Each station will have: Super hero logo to match the clue that led you there Letter puzzle pieces (7 of the same letter) The next clue (6 of the same clue) To begin the game, divide the group into teams (up to 7 teams.) Each team will receive one clue. Participants will then solve the riddle and head to the location designated in the clue. At the clue station, participants will pick up a letter puzzle piece and their next clue. Once all stations have been
reached, participants will need to unscramble the letter puzzle pieces they have collected to receive their prize. This game can be played with all teams going to each clue station in the same sequence (by giving all teams the same clue at the beginning) or with all teams going to each station in a random sequence (by giving all teams random clues at the beginning). If played in the same sequence, there will be a definitive start and finish. If played in a random sequence, participants will start at a random clue station and play through the clues until they reach the clue station where they began. Clues: This hero gained his powers after a spider bite. His web slinging skills help in many epic fights. He has another name, as most superheroes do. His job as Peter Parker will lead you to a clue. Answer: Spider-Man, to lead to the Photography section of Nonfiction or Juvenile Nonfiction In the city of Metropolis this Man of Steel fights crime. Flying faster than a bullet saves him lots of time. A newspaper reporter is who he pretends to be. Do we have the Daily Planet? You d better go and see. Answer: Superman, to lead to the Newspapers Diana is a princess and as strong as any hero, but if you look for her in Disneyland, you ll only come up zero. She fights for truth and justice, and defends world peace. You ll find her clue where you find the gods of ancient Greece. Answer: Wonder Woman, to lead to the Greek Mythology section of Nonfiction or Juvenile Nonfiction This hero goes by Logan and fights for the X-Men cause. You wouldn t want to shake his hand a hand with metal claws. He has fantastic hearing, as most canine beings do. So you ll see him where you go to find something to listen to. Answer: Wolverine, to lead to the CDs or Audiobooks
This billionaire inventor, Stark, made a special suit. He won t admit he thinks that his assistant Pepper s cute. He has no reservations about putting on a show! Hey, to make a reservation, where would you have to go? Answer: Iron Man, to lead to the Computer Reservation terminal This hero is a strong one, a very mighty fella. You can find at the Avenger s Mansion, Asgard, or Valhalla. Although his magic hammer, Mjolnir, is a wonder, this clue will tell you if someone can really make thunder. Answer: Thor, to lead to the Weather section of Nonfiction or Juvenile Nonfiction This man fights for his country. Steve Rogers is his name! His starry shield and stripes suit have brought him lots of fame. He was an entertainer in his earlier career; He heard there were some bored books, so he went to spread some cheer. Answer: Captain America, to lead to the Board Books This fancy feline is a thief, sometime a hero too. Her purr-sonality and daring have made a tale or two. She makes the Caped Crusader wonder if she s a villain or not. Look here to find a clue and see if this leopard can change her spots. Answer: Catwoman, to lead to the Big Cats section of Nonfiction or Juvenile Nonfiction This hero is a millionaire. His lair is in a cave. To find him in the darkness, you must be very brave. He has a trusty servant but he drives his car himself. He has a brand new movie could it be on the shelf? Answer: Batman, to lead to the New Release DVDs This hero s super power comes when he gets really mad. He rips through lots of t-shirts, which must make his mother sad! He s strong and huge and looks like he spends hours at the gym. You ll find this bulky fellow by something green like him. Answer: The Hulk, to lead to an area with something green
