WHY SEEK YE THE LIVING AMONG THE DEAD LUKE 24:1-10 Text: Luke 24:5 Luke 24:5 5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? Introduction: The cross had a different effect of different people. To the priest they had got rid of the One that spoke with authority. The Pharisee got rid of the One whose life revealed their sin. The authorities had got rid of the tumult with the people. However there were those that were heavy and broken hearted. Some of these were those that were making their way to the tomb to embalm the Lord s body. Notice it was the first day of the week, the day known today as the Lord s Day. They awake very early in the morning making their way to the tomb. When they arrive I m sure they hearts sank as they saw that the stone that had been placed in front of the tomb had been moved. The One that they had loved, and saw die, was now nowhere to be found. - 1 -

The Bible tells us that after they had discovered that the Lord was not in the tomb that they were met by two men in shining garments who ask them a very important question: Why seek ye the living among the dead? Little did they know that this question would make these morticians to become missionaries. Notice: 1. DIRECTED QUESTION (Luke 24:5) "And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?" A. Personal 1. Is given to us as well. Why would we seek a dead Saviour? B. Powerful 1. I m sure that at the time they didn t realize the power in the question, but death had lost its sting. Not only is this a Directed Question but it is also a: - 2 -

2. DISCOVERING QUESTION A. Remembrance (vss 6-8) (Luke 24:6-8) "He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, {7} Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. {8} And they remembered his words," 1. We too need to remember. a. Remember where we came from and what we once were. (Ephesians 2:11-13) "Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; {12} That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: {13} But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ." b. Remember where we have fallen and repent. - 3 -

(Revelation 2:5) "Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent." c. Remember unsettled problems (Matthew 5:23-24) "Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; {24} Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift." d. Remember that God will destroy unbelievers. (Jude 1:5) "I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not." B. Realization C. Renewal 1. Truth was spoken by the Saviour 1. They came sad and left singing 2. They came broken and left beaming - 4 -

3. They came full of fear and left full of faith. Not only was this question a directed question and a discovering question but it was also a: 3. DETERMINING QUESTION A. Determines our Destiny 1. Who is it that will save? (John 14:6) "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (Revelation 1:18) "I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death." B. Determines our determination (Luke 24:9-10) "And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest. {10} It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles." 1. They cried He lives He lives Christ Jesus lives today. - 5 -

Close: Have you trusted the Saviour as you personal Saviour or are you seeking salvation among the dead? If so are you telling it where ever you go? - 6 -
