Twos September 2013 The 10 Commandments Ten Commandments (The Beginner s Bible: pg. 120-123) This is a recommended schedule. You can adjust, but do make time for the lesson and the activity! 15 minutes 5 minutes 10 minutes 5 minutes 5 minutes 10 minutes 10 minutes Check-in and play time Clean-up toys Prayer/sing/snack Lesson/story time Song time Lesson activity/craft Play and clean-up time God Loves Us In September, we're going to learn the story of the 10 commandments. Now, if you've looked at those recently - you know they aren't exactly in two-year-old terms. (Adultery? Murder? Yeah, you get the idea...) So we need to keep it to a higher level rather than specifically call out the 10 particular commandments. The lesson will guide you on that! * We have those industrial bubble machines for a reason! Use them to help kids acclimate in the first 5-10 minutes. As you check in kids, be sure to ask parents if their kids are potty-trained or are working on it. And so you know - if there is an "accident" we've got some clothes available to send them home in. Basically the 10 commandments can be broken into two groups - Love God and Love Others. Really - check it out. And breaking it down like that can help Twos learn the valuable lesson of the 10 commandments.

Goal: To help kids understand that Jesus loved spending time with kids Why? We want them to know that if Jesus loves kids Jesus loves them! Tip: If the kids won t all participate in today s activity, don t sweat it. There s a big difference between 24 months and 36 months. We think if there s even one kid capable of grasping Jesus loves them, it s worth teaching that truth! QUESTIONS The goal of the activities is to provide experiences to help the kids grasp the main concept of the story. ACTIVITY August 31-September 1, 2013 September 14-15, 2013 September 28-29, 2013 Today we learned about how God gives us rules because He loves us and wants us to obey Him. Do you remember what the two rules are? (Work with the kids to yell out, "Love God" and "Love Others." You may need to coach a few times.) Have kids say it into the megaphone for fun! Supplies needed: Patience and a megaphone September 7-8, 2013 September 21-22, 2013 Today we learned about how God gives us rules because He loves us and wants us to obey Him. He wrote the rules on two stone tables - we're going to color a picture of the tablets with the rules. Supplies needed: Coloring page of 10 commandments and crayons

2 QUESTIONS This page left blank intentionally ACTIVITY

1 We're using "The Beginner's Bible" for all of our stories. If you'd like to read another kid version of the story of Abraham, The Jesus Storybook Bible does a great job. "Ten ways to be perfect" is the title of the story, starting on page 100. Feel free to pause, use voice inflections or voices - remember being animated helps them listen! You can ask questions during the story too! Hold up the Bible and ask, "Does anyone know what this is?" That's right! It's a Bible. And the Bible is a very special book because God gave it to us. And the best part? It's all true! Today we are going to learn a very special story that shows us how much God loves us. Does your mom or dad give you rules to follow? (Use examples of rules such as... don't tell a lie/fib or don't hit your brother/sister?) They give us rules because they love us and they don't want us to get in trouble. Did you know God gives us rules, too?? Well He does - let's read the story. Read: "Ten Commandments" (pages 120-123). NOTE ON PAGE 122: When you get to the page that shows the tablets - explain that all these rules are really two things: Love God and Love Others. Tell them that God wants us to love Him all the time, just like we love mom and dad. And he wants us to love other people (kids, grandmas/grandpas) like we love mom and dad and God. QUESTIONS - Have the kids repeat the answers with you. What are the two rules we should follow? (Love God and Love Others) Does God want us to love Him all the time? (Yes) Does God want us to love others? (Yes) Let's thank God for taking care of us. (An idea for a simple prayer: "Dear God, we're so happy you love us and take care of us. Thank you. We love you! Amen.")

In September, we're learning more about obeying and trusting God through the story of the 10 commandments. Don't worry! We didn't get into the details of the 10 "rules." Instead, we talked about how God gave us these rules because He loves us and wants us to obey Him. These "rules" really fall into two categories: "love God" and "love others." Take a look yourself in Exodus 20.
