THE AUTHORITY OF SCRIPTURE IT CAME FROM GOD 2
PAUL SAID ALL SCRIPTURE is given by INSPIRATION OF GOD, and is PROFITABLE for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness (II Tim. 3:16). 3
ALL SCRIPTURE MEANS BOTH THE OLD & NEW TESTAMENTS Someone said, The Old Testament is the New Testament concealed and the New Testament is the Old Testament revealed. The Old & New Testaments combine to give us a more complete understanding. They are complimentary not contradictory. Each one helps us understand the other. 4
ALL SCRIPTURE WAS GIVEN BY INSPIRATION OF GOD MEANS... If we ignore either one of them its the same thing as ignoring, muzzling or silencing the inspiration of God. If we ignore the Old Testament, we will have a limited understanding of the New Testament & if we ignore the New Testament we will have a limited understanding of the Old Testament. And we will also have a limited understanding of Bible prophecy. 5
ALL SCRIPTURE IS PROFITABLE MEANS... Everything in the Bible is important. There s benefit to everything God gave us in the Old & New Testaments. We need to read, study & learn both. 6
WE ALSO NEED TO SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES Jesus told some Jews to, SEARCH the SCRIPTURES; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which TESTIFY OF ME (Jn. 5:39). 7
JESUS SAID, THE SCRIPTURES TESTIFY OF ME The Scriptures are about Jesus, but the only Scriptures that existed when Jesus said this are found in the Old Testament. If we ignore the Old Testament, we will ignore things Jesus wanted us to know about Him. 8
PAUL TALKED ABOUT IT He said, For whatsoever things were written AFORETIME were written for our LEARNING, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have HOPE (Rom. 15:4). The Old Testament was given before the Church came into being for the Christian s LEARNING and HOPE. 9
FOOLS AND HYPOCRITES Jesus called the two men on the road to Emmaus FOOLS for not believing all that the Old Testament prophets said (Luke 24:25). Jesus called some of the Pharisees and Sadducees HYPOCRITES because they paid more attention to the weather than the Old Testament signs of His coming (Matt. 16:1-3). 10
INTRODUCTION TO THE FEASTS OF THE LORD The Feasts of the Lord are about Jesus. They are for the Church and Israel. 11
SEVEN FEASTS OF THE LORD ARE GIVEN IN LEV. 23 1) The Feast of Passover (Lev. 23:4-5). 2) The Feast of Unleavened Bread (Lev. 23:6-8). 3) The Feast of First Fruits (Lev. 23:9-14). 4) The Feast of Pentecost (Lev. 23:13-22). 5) The Feast of Trumpets (Lev. 23:23-25). 6) The Feast of Atonement (Lev. 23:26-32). 7) The Feast of Tabernacles (Lev. 23:33-44). 12
THESE FEASTS ARE THE FEASTS OF THE LORD OR GOD S FEASTS God called these feasts the Feasts of the Lord (Lev. 23:2). He also called them my feasts (Lev. 23:2) He didn t call them the Jewish Feasts or the Feasts of Israel. They are the Feasts of the Lord or God s Feasts. 13
THE FEASTS OF THE LORD ARE APPOINTED TIMES The Hebrew word that is translated Feasts actually means Appointed Times. The feasts are God s appointed times. These appointed times have special significance to God and each one of us. 14
THESE FEASTS OF THE LORD ARE HOLY CONVOCATIONS God told Moses to, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts (Lev. 23:2). 15
HOLY CONVOCATIONS MEANS... God set these feasts apart because He wanted His people to gather or assemble for a special or holy purpose. We will soon learn that they are a rehearsal of past events that point to future events. These feasts holy gatherings to recall holy events of the past that point to holy events of the future. 16
THE LORD S SUPPER IS AN EXAMPLE Concerning the Lord s Supper, Paul said, For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord s death till he come (I Cor. 11:26). The Lord s Supper is a holy convocation that looks back on the death of Jesus and forward to the Second Coming of Jesus. The Feasts of the Lord are selected past events that reveal selected future events about Jesus. 17
GOD GAVE THE FEASTS OF THE LORD BECAUSE... He wants Israel and the Church to remember the past and teach it to their children. He wants Israel and the Church to have a better understanding of what He intends to do in the future.. So the Feasts of the Lord remember the past and they point to the future. 18
THE FEASTS OF THE LORD ARE CLUSTERED INTO 3 SEASONS NISAN 14, 15, 16 SIVAN 6 TISHRI 1, 10, 15 God said, These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons (Lev. 23:4). 19
THE FEASTS OF THE LORD ARE THREE SEASONAL HOLY CONVOCATIONS God said, Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose (the Temple in Jerusalem); in the feast of unleavened bread (spring), and in the feast of weeks (summer), and in the feast of tabernacles (fall): and they shall not appear before the LORD empty (without an offering) (Deut. 16:16). 20
In the spring, the Jews went on a pilgrimage to the Temple at Jerusalem & celebrated: The Feast of Passover. The Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the Feast of First Fruits. 21
In the summer, the Jews went on a pilgrimage to the Temple at Jerusalem & celebrated: The Feast of Weeks (also called The Feast of Pentecost). 22
In the fall, the Jews went on a pilgrimage to the Temple at Jerusalem & celebrated: The Feast of Trumpets. The Feast of Atonement. And the Feast of Tabernacles. 23
THE FEASTS OF THE LORD ARE A SHADOW OF GOOD THINGS TO COME For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers 24 thereunto perfect (Heb. 10:1).
SHADOWS, PICTURES, OBJECT LESSONS OR VISUAL AIDS Someone said, A picture is worth a 1,000 words. The Feasts of the Lord are pictures of past events that are a shadow of good things to come. Some think they are doom & gloom things. But they are good things that help us know more about Jesus. 25
THE FEASTS OF THE LORD ARE PROPHETIC The spring pilgrimage with its three spring feasts are prophecies about the First Coming of Jesus. They have been LITERALLY fulfilled. The summer pilgrimage with its one summer feast is a prophecy about the Church Age. This is currently being fulfilled. The fall pilgrimage with its three fall feasts appear to be prophecies about the 2 nd Coming of Jesus. Many expect them to be LITERALLY fulfilled in the near future. 26
A MEMORIAL AND A PROPHECY For 3500 years, every time the Jews have celebrated a feast day from the time of Moses until today, they have REMEMBERED a segment of their history and REVEALED a prophecy about the first coming of Jesus, the Church or the Second Coming of Jesus. 27
JESUS SAID... Think not that I am come to destroy the law/torah, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled (Matt. 5:17-18). Among other things, Jesus came to fulfill the prophetic aspects of the Law. 28
THE FEASTS OF THE LORD INCLUDE MANY ACTIVITIES Some include fasting, mourning, affliction and repentance for sin. Some include remembrance for God s past deliverance and blessings. Some include thanksgiving for God s good harvests of the present. But underneath all of these things is the fact that the feast days are prophetic. 29
THEY OFFER THANKSGIVING FOR THREE DIFFERENT HARVESTS The spring thanksgiving or Feast of First Fruits to thank God for the barley harvest. The summer thanksgiving or Feast of Weeks to thank God for the Wheat harvest. And the Fall thanksgiving or Feast of Tabernacles to thank God for the remainder of the harvest of the earth: fruit, dates, etc. 30
