I. Introductory Remarks. Partners In Purpose: Word & Spirit Ken Birks, Pastor/Teacher The Bible shows very clearly that we need the two agencies of the Word of God and the Holy Spirit working in our lives if we are to be fully successful as Christians. Psalm 119:130 The entrance of your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple. Psalm 119:133 Direct my steps by Your word, and let no iniquity have dominion over me. John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth, for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak. Message Title Partnering Together Word and Spirit. The purpose of this message is for us to come to a more full understanding of how God wants to use the Holy Spirit and the Word of God to seize our destiny and become more whole as Christians. Just as the Word and Spirit partner together, we must partner with them if we are to be successful and fully inherit all that God has for us. II. Biblical Examples of the Word and Spirit Partnering Together. Acts 2:1-4 (NKJV) When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. {2} And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. {3} Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon Page 1

each of them. {4} And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. The Scenario of what took place on this historic day 1. People from all nations were present and heard them speaking in their own languages Verse 5. 2. They were all confused Mass Confusion. 3. They were all amazed and marveled Verse 6 4. They were perplexed Verse 12. 5. Others mocked Verse 13. These were the initial responses to the working of the Holy Spirit before the Word of God came alongside and partnered with what God was doing through the Holy Spirit. The Word of God Enters the Scenario. Acts 2:14-16 (NKJV) But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, "Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words. {15} "For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. {16} "But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: Notice what begins to take place as the Word of God is introduced to this scenario: Peter quotes from the Book of Joel and the Book of Psalms. 1. Peter Speaks with confidence and assurance He has been able to discern from the Word of God, the prophetic purpose concerning this situation Acts 2:29-33. Acts 2:32-33 (NKJV) "This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. {33} "Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear. 2. Peter is not only filled with the Holy Spirit; he is also filled with the Word of Page 2

God. 3. He uses the Word of God to bring definition and purpose to what the Holy Spirit is doing. The Results of the Word Partnering with the Spirit. 1. The Conviction of the Holy Spirit is Released Verse 37. 2. Repentance and Deliverance as well as the call and promise for everyone to be a partaker comes forth Verses 38-39. 3. A harvest of 3000 souls were added to the church Verse 41. 4. They all continued steadfastly in the apostles doctrine and fellowship Verse 42. 5. They entered into an atmosphere of community A commitment to Body life Verse 44. 6. Total Commitment - They totally sold out to the Lord Verse 45. 7. They continued in one accord praising God and having favor with the people Verse 46-47. 8. The church was launched into its destiny as were each of the individual members. This is what we can expect to happen in our lives when we partner together with the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. Try to imagine what would have occurred had the Word of God not been introduced to the scenario. It would have just been a spiritual playground with no purpose being established. This wonderful experience in the Holy Spirit would have produced nothing but confusion, fear, bewilderment, and mocking. The Lord would not have been glorified. It took the Holy Spirit and the Word of God partnering together to produce the glory of God. Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV) For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. On the other hand what would have taken place if all they had was the Word of God without the experience of the Holy Spirit? They would have been locked Page 3

into a dry meaningless experience void of any life and exuberance. John 7:37-39 (NKJV) On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. {38} "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." {39} But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. Proverbs 11:1 (KJV) A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight. What are the practical applications of these truths being worked out in our lives? Does it really matter whether we are partnering with the Word of God and the Holy Spirit? III. Spiritual Applications I want to take this principle and apply it to two areas of our lives: Wholeness and Destiny. 1. The Spirit, the Word and Wholeness. The Holy Spirit and Wholeness. Matthew 3:11-12 (NKJV) "I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. {12} "His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." John 16:8-9 (NKJV) "And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: {9} "of sin, because they do not believe in Me; One of the functions the Holy Spirit does in our lives is to convict us of the sin that still exists. When we pray in the Holy Spirit we are releasing the Holy Spirit Page 4

to convict us of the sin in our lives. Romans 8:11 (NKJV) But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. God s desire is to use the Holy Spirit to the place where we are so convicted about our sin that we will desire to be more whole and allow Him through His Word to now transform us from glory to glory. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 (NKJV) Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. {18} But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. The Word of God and Wholeness. John 17:17 (NKJV) "Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. Ephesians 5:26-27 (NKJV) that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, {27} that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. The Word of God gives us instruction in every area of our lives as to how we should be conformed into the image of Christ. It is the standard of which our lives must adjust to. The power of change comes through agreement. When we are applying the Word of God to the areas the Holy Spirit is speaking to us about there is an agreement there that releases the power of God to activate the change. Matthew 18:19-20 (NKJV) "Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. {20} "For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them." When we come into agreement with the Word and the Spirit, mighty things begin to break loose in our lives. Page 5

2. The Spirit, the Word and Destiny. The Holy Spirit and Destiny. Ephesians 1:17-19 (NKJV) that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, {18} the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, {19} and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power God speaks to us in many ways through the Holy Spirit to reveal to us our wonderful destiny we have in Him. He has called each us with a holy calling that is according to His own purpose. When the Holy Spirit gives us spiritual experiences they are designed for a purpose. The are designed to bring us into our destiny. The Word of God and Destiny. When we walk in the Word and the Spirit, it opens us up to our destiny in a fare greater measure than any other way we have ever experienced in the past. 2 Peter 1:17-21 (KJV) For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. {18} And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. {19} We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: {20} Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. {21} For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. The Word of God always takes precedence over experience. Notice how Peter compares his experience with Jesus on the mountain when Elijah and Moses appeared. He says, the Word of God is a more sure word. Page 6

A spiritual experience undefined in the Word of God lacks purpose and only places you in a spiritual playground. God s desires much more for us than to play in spiritual playgrounds simply going from one spiritual experience to another with no related purpose. The Word of God keeps us on course in the midst of Holy Spirit induced experiences. It keeps us moving forward in the purpose of God and our destiny. IV. Concluding Remarks. God wants to remove the confusion, bewilderment and mocking from our lives so that we can be whole and fulfill the destiny as He has charted out for us. As we walk in the Spirit and apply the Word of God to our lives we will receive the understanding and ability we need to fulfill all that God has for us. The Holy Spirit and the Word partnering together will produce conviction, repentance, deliverance, harvest, steadfastness, commitment to Body life, total commitment and favor with unbelievers as well as being launched into your destiny and becoming whole.
