How to Pray the World Mission Rosary Archdiocese of Cincinnati Mission Office

World Mission Rosary In February of 1951, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen (national director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith from 1950 to 1966), in a The Catholic Hou radio address, inaugurated a World Mission Rosary. We must pray, and not for ourselves, but for the world. To this end, I have designed the World Mission Rosary. Each of the five decades is of a different color to represent the continents. Praying this Rosary, Archbishop Sheen said, would aid the Holy Father and his Society for the Propagation of the Faith by supplying him with practical support, as well as prayers, for the poor mission territories of the world. Each decade of the World Mission Rosary calls to mind an area where the Church continues her evangelizing mission: GREEN for the forests and grasslands of AFRICA; BLUE for the ocean surrounding the ISLANDS OF THE PACIFIC; WHITE symbolizing EUROPE, the seat of the Holy Father, shepherd of the world; RED calling to mind the fire of faith that brought missionaries to the AMERICAS YELLOW, the morning light of the East, for ASIA. Our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, encouraged everyone to intensify your praying of the Rosary to obtain from the Lord those graces that the Church and humanity especially need." The Mission Office of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati enthusiastically embraces the challenge of our baptismal commitment to Jesus Christ, and are privileged to participate in His mission, embodied in the Church, to build unity among all peoples in the world. We hope you will join us in our work through the many activities offered by the Mission Office. We invite you to contact us if you need any additional information. Services Offered: The Mission Office is the local office of the Pontifical Mission Societies which support the 1,150 struggling mission diocese around the world. The Pontifical Mission Societies are: The Society for the Propagation of the Faith The Holy Childhood Association The Society of St. Peter the Apostle The Pontifical Missionary Union. Programs are offered to schools and churches to promote and educate concerning short and long term mission work, immersion trip advice, twinning between parishes of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and mission sites, and about mission/global solidarity efforts in general. The Mission Office provides opportunities for mission experiences, celebrations of solidarity and spiritual and financial support of the missions. We promote the support of both home and foreign missions. www.catholiccincinnati.org/mission mission@catholiccincinnati.org www.onefamilyinmission.org (national office) www.worldmissionrosary.org (pray the rosary online)

The Holy Childhood Association Do you know the history of the Holy Childhood Association, one of only four mission societies to be designated as Pontifical? French Bishop Charles de Forbin-Janson founded the Holy Childhood Association in 1843. Deeply affected by the distress of Chinese children abandoned in the streets, he was moved to found a society similar to the Propagation of the Faith -- but for children. He was convinced that children rich in faith and love are capable of playing their own part in the Church's mission - and even of stirring adults to show the same generous spirit. HCA was established in 1846 in the United States, first in New Orleans and later in Baltimore. Today, its National Office is located in New York City with diocesan HCA offices nationwide. HCA was raised to the status of "Pontifical" in 1922 by Pope Pius XI. Mission Education Programs available through the HCA A variety of Mission Education Programs are available from the HCA. Through HCA s Membership Program, students are invited to make a special commitment as missionaries and become members for $1.25 each. They receive a bookmark, prayer card, membership card and a subscription to the HCA newsletter, It s Our World. The newsletter comes three times each school year and their teacher will receive a teacher s guide to the newsletter. Each newsletter focuses on an individual country. For details on this and other HCA programs go to www.onefamilyinmission.org or phone 513-421-3131 ext 2632. Students HCA has fun for you! Students, HCA has a website for you: www.hcakids.org. You can download games and learn about students in other parts of the world who are just like you. There is an artwork contest and stories from various missionaries. Check it out! How to say the Rosary Begin the rosary by holding the Crucifix and making the Sign of the Cross. Then pray the Apostles Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. AMEN. On the first bead, pray the Our Father: Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, AMEN On the next three beads, recite the Hail Mary: Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, AMEN. On the next bead, pray the Glory Be: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, AMEN Then, announce the First...

The Joyful Mysteries Said on Monday and Saturday The Mission Mysteries Said for the missions on special occasions The first Joyful The Annunciation The archangel Gabriel announces to Mary that she shall conceive the Son of God. That the good news of a Savior, first announced to Mary, may be proclaimed to all the world. You listened to the word of God announced by the angel Gabriel. You believed and became the Mother of God. Teach me to listen to the Word and keep it. May it take root in my heart, grow and blossom, for my life and that of others too. announce the second The second Joyful The Visitation Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth, who is pregnant with John the Baptist That missionaries who travel long roads bearing Christ may be strengthened in faith and holiness. Mary, you visited Elizabeth in her need. Each of you was moved by the Holy Spirit to praise God for what God had done for you. Teach me to be attentive to how the Spirit is present in my life and the lives of announce the third... The third Joyful The Nativity of Jesus Jesus is Born! For the children of the world, especially those who are poor and homeless, that they may know the love of Jesus. Mary, you gave birth to Jesus, God s own son. At the foot of His cross, you became my mother. Raise me as your own child. Raise me as God s own child. Take care of all of God s children, especially those who do not know God. announce the fourth... The fourth Mission Jesus sends out His Disciples Jesus sends His followers to bring the Good News to others. That all who bring the Good News to others may do so with the same love and enthusiasm of the first missionaries of Jesus. The disciples went to others, heedless of the danger to themselves and filled with the Holy Spirit. Help me to consider my own missionary vocation whether it be in my own home or somewhere far away. announce the fifth The fifth Mission The Conversion of Paul In a very stunning change, through the grace of God, Paul stops persecuting Christians and starts preaching the Good News. May we experience true conversion of heart daily through our prayer and good works. Paul transformed the Church from a small sect of Judaism to a truly universal church, teaching us that we must never dismiss others as beyond God s reach, even when their previous actions show them to be our enemies.

The Mission Mysteries Said for the missions on special occasions The Joyful Mysteries Said on Monday and Saturday The first Mission The Visit of the Magi Three strangers arrive from the east. That all who seek Jesus will find Jesus. The Magi were astrologers from Persia. When Jesus was born, they read in the stars that there was a newborn King of the Jews. This mission teaches us that all who seek God with an open heart will be guided to the Lord announce the second The second Mission Jesus speaks with the Samaritan Woman Jesus speaks to someone considered unworthy. Father, help us to understand that all people are Your children and that all people deserve respect. Jesus scandalized his followers by speaking to a woman and a non Jew. But Jesus knows all of God s children are worthy of respect and love. In addition, Jesus gave the woman a deep desire to know God and to have her people know God too. announce the third... The third Mission Jesus cures the Centurion s Servant Jesus cures the servant of a Roman soldier. That all who are ill, especially those who face the hardship of poverty come to know Jesus healing presence. The Romans and the Jews were enemies. Yet, this centurion was friendly to the Jews. He was desperate to save his servant. His faith impressed Jesus. And Jesus used this example to teach the people of God. announce the fourth... The fourth Joyful The Presentation Mary and Joseph present Jesus in the Temple. That Catholic families throughout the world, by the example of their lives, may show the love of Christ to their neighbors. Mary, when Jesus was a little boy, you offered him to the service of God. We pray also to be servants of God and servants of each other. announce the fifth The fifth Joyful Finding Jesus in the Temple Mary and Joseph find the young Jesus teaching the Rabbis in the Temple. That all the people of the world that live in sorrow may find in the Gospel message of Jesus new life and peace. Mary, when you lost Jesus, you searched and found him. When I am lost, help me to find Jesus. Teach me to help others experience the joy of finding Jesus in their lives.

The Sorrowful Mysteries Said on Tuesday and Friday The Luminous Mysteries Said on Thursday The first Sorrowful The Agony in the Garden Jesus sweats water and blood while in prayer on the night before his passion. That all in the world who persevere in faith may feel the presence of the Lord. Lord Jesus, you accepted being like us even to the point of death. In prayer, you realized that this was the Father s will. We pray that our suffering and weaknesses and those of all humanity may be sanctified by your Spirit and united to your suffering for the life of the world. announce the second The second Sorrowful The Scourging at the Pillar Pilot has Jesus whipped. That all who suffer in body, especially the hungry, may be fed through our sharing. Lord Jesus, forgive me for the times I have been indifferent to the sufferings of my brothers and sisters around the world. Help me offer my own pain and suffering on behalf of all who serve in the missionary work of the Church. announce the third The third Sorrowful The Crowning with Thorns Roman solders crown Jesus head with thorns. That all who suffer in despair, especially refugees, may find hope in Christ s promise of eternal happiness. Lord Jesus, I am sorry for all the times I hurt you by hurting others. Teach me to grow in kindness and generous love so that I may grow to become more like you. announce the fourth The fourth Luminous The Transfiguration Christ is transfigured as the Father, Son, and Spirit. That those whose faith in God is tested every day through the struggles of their daily lives may be an example to others who doubt, yet do not struggle for the basics of life. Lord, your disciples saw who You really are, the Son of God. I want to be Your disciple. I want to listen to You, learn from You and become like You. May Your Spirit transform me into Your likeness. announce the fifth The fifth Luminous The Institution of the Eucharist Jesus offers the first Mass at the Last Supper establishing the Sacramental foundation for all Christians. The Mass reminds us that we who eat Christ s Body and drink His Blood are sent to continue His mission to the world. May we take to heart this mandate. Lord Jesus, You gave Your life for us. You prepare a table for all people to share in Your life. Make me a server and sharer at this banquet.

The Luminous Mysteries Said on Thursday The Sorrowful Mysteries Said on Tuesday and Friday The first Luminous The Baptism in the Jordan The Father declares Jesus the Beloved Son. That all who do not know Jesus, especially the children, can come to hear of his great love. Lord Jesus, You were baptized by John. You befriended all people. Free me from feeling I m better than others. May all of us get closer to You. The second Luminous The Wedding at Cana Jesus changes water into wine, His first public miracle. Father, we hear often of the generosity of the poor to the poor, may all come to know the joy of giving from their need and not only from their surplus. Jesus, You introduced Your disciples to Your mother at the wedding in Cana. She teaches us to follow Your will. Show me Your love so that I may too believe. The third Luminous The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God and Call to Conversion Jesus calls to conversion and forgives the sins of all who draw near to Him. Father, we know that missionaries come from all cultures. Help us to understand that we too are missionaries by virtue of our baptism. Lord Jesus, rule in my heart and help me spread the Good News of Your love and peace throughout the world so that someday all may be one in Your name. The fourth Sorrowful Jesus Carries the Cross. Jesus meets his mother and falls three times on this way to Calvary. For the church in the United States, that through prayer and sacrifice we may help bear the burdens of our brothers and sisters worldwide and that we may see and celebrate their gifts to the church. Lord, you accepted the burden of the cross. Give me the grace, courage and sincere desire to take up my cross daily and follow you. The fifth Sorrowful The Crucifixion Jesus is nailed to the cross and dies before his mother and John the Apostle That those who hunger and thirst for justice may work peacefully and successfully toward their goal. Lord, help me remember how great your love is fro me and the world. Teach me to love myself as you love me and to love others as you love them. announce the second announce the third... announce the fourth... announce the fifth

The Glorious Mysteries Said on Wednesday and Sunday The Glorious Mysteries Said on Wednesday and Sunday The first Glorious The Resurrection Jesus rises from the dead. For the Church worldwide, that our faith in the risen Christ may draw others to Him. Lord Jesus, help me experience the joy of the resurrection each day and to share this joy with others. announce the second The second Glorious The Ascension Jesus leaves the Apostles and, bodily, ascends into heaven. That Christ, who lived as man and returned to the Father, will grant to all people knowledge of the way to eternal life. Lord Jesus, by your Holy Spirit, draw me up towards Yourself and to all that is good, holy and true. I offer this prayer for all people, especially those who have yet to hear the Good News. announce the third... The third Glorious The Descent of the Holy Spirit The Apostles receive the Holy Spirit in tongues of fire in the upper room with Mary. For our Holy Father, that the Holy Spirit will grant him wisdom, fortitude and holiness as he leads our church. Lord, please send your Spirit upon me. May the gifts of the Holy Spirit help me be a better missionary so I may help bring about Your Kingdom. announce the fourth... The fourth Glorious The Assumption Mary is taken, bodily, into heaven by God. That Mary, who gave the human body of Christ to the world, inspire us who form the body of Christ on Earth to proclaim God s message to all peoples. Mary, you were glorified, sharing completely in God s own life, because of your obedience to God s word. Help me to follow God s word and do God s will. announce the fifth The fifth Glorious The Coronation Mary is crowned Queen of Heaven and Earth. That through the intercession of Mary, young men and women will offer their lives to God as priests, religious sisters & brothers and lay missionaries in service to their neighbors. Mary, I want you to be my queen, to reign in every aspect of my life, so that you may submit me to the reign of your Son Jesus.
