What is the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Objective of Lesson The gospel of Jesus Christ is good news for helpless sinners from the Almighty God of sovereign grace. The God against whom we have sinned is a gracious, almighty God. This great God has found a way to save sinners without compromising His holy character. How? He gave His only son to die as payment for the sins of His people. Scripture Reference Proverbs 25:25 (King James Version) 25 As cold waters to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country. Lesson Instructions 1. Today we are going to talk about a word you all hear a lot but may not know what it means. Have you ever heard the word gospel? Raise your hand if you have heard that word. Raise your hand if you know what it is. 2. What is the Gospel? That is a very important question and we are going to find out from the word of God (our Bibles) what that means. The word gospel comes from an old word that means "good news" or "glad tidings. So to say you are telling someone the gospel means you are telling them good news! There are many different gospels, but today we are going to talk about Truth For Children: What is the Gospel of Jesus Christ 2011 1

the Gospel of Jesus Christ. That is the same thing as saying, The good news of Jesus Christ. 3. First let s think of some things that would be good news to you. If you were really hungry and someone told you, Your father is inside preparing a meal for you. Would that be good news? Yes. Can you think of any more examples that would be good news? What if you lost something? What if you were lost yourself? What if you were really sick? What if you were hurt really bad? What if you were cold? What if you were tired? Like in our verse what if you were thirsty? Talk about each one of these things and what would be good news to you, if you were in those situations. 4. Those are all great examples of good news. Now we are going to talk about the Good News of Jesus Christ. I want you all to imagine that you re in big trouble. You have broken some very important rules and you have disobeyed someone greater and more important than any other. This someone is God Almighty, the creator of you and me and everything on this earth. To disobey the one who created you means great trouble for you. The person who does that is what the Bible calls a sinner. It is a person that has broken God s law (His rules). 5. The Bible says that the soul that sins has to die. When a person sins against God and breaks His commandments, they can t go back and fix it. The only way to pay for the damage is to die. The Bible tells us we are ALL sinners, which means even though we may not understand it or know it, we have ALL sinned against God. (Rom 3:23) We are all in really big trouble. God told us there was no way for us to pay the price for our sin. 6. Now what? Knowing that all sinners have to die, what would be good news? Would it be good news if someone came to you and told you there was a man, just like you who said He died in your place and paid the price for your sin, and you no longer are required to die? WOW! That would be WONDERFUL news! If you were sentenced to death and you found out that a man had already paid the price and died in your place to save you, would that be good Truth For Children: What is the Gospel of Jesus Christ 2011 2

news? 7. That is exactly what happened! That is the Gospel of Jesus Christ! That is the Good news! There is good news for helpless sinners from God, against whom we have sinned. He is a gracious, almighty, and merciful God. 8. It is true; God is holy, righteous and just. He must and will punish sin, but this great God has found a way to save sinners without compromising His holy character. He gave His Son, Jesus Christ, to be a sacrifice and payment for our sins. That is good news! If you are required by God to die for your sins and you can t pay that, there is good news for you. The Gospel - The Lord Jesus Christ has already paid it for you.
