The Spirit Part 1: You Don t Know What You ve Got Pastor Chris Jung October 13, 2013 ONCE UPON A TIME Do not banish me from your presence, and don t take your Holy Spirit from me. Psalm 51:11 (NLT) Then she cried out, Samson! The Philistines have come to capture you! When he woke up, he thought, I will do as before and shake myself free. But he didn t realize the Lord had left him. Judges 16:20 (NLT) Have the people of Israel build me a holy sanctuary so I can live among them. Exodus 25:8 (NLT) Don t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? 1 Corinthians 6:19 (NLT) WITHOUT THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IN MY LIFE 1. I COULDN T EVEN BELIEVE IN JESUS 1.
But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking where I am going. Instead, you grieve because of what I ve told you. But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don t, the Advocate won t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. The world s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged. There is so much more I want to tell you, but you can t bear it now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me. John 16:5-15 (NLT) 2. I WOULD STILL BE AN ENEMY OF GOD There was a time when some of you were just like that but now your sins are washed away, and you are set apart for God; 2.
and he has accepted you because of what the Lord Jesus Christ and the Spirit of our God have done for you. 1 Corinthians 6:11 (TLB) Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us. Ephesians 2:18 (NLT) 3. I WOULD FOREVER REMAIN A SLAVE TO SIN But When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit. He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. Titus 3:4-6 (NLT) But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. 3.
Now we call him, Abba, Father. For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God s children. And since we are his children, we are his heirs. Romans 8:13-17 (NLT) 4. I COULD NEVER RECOGNIZE GOD S WILL OR HIS FAVOR And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God s own will. Romans 8:26-27 (NLT) But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God s deep secrets. No one can know a person s thoughts except that person s own spirit, and no one can know God s thoughts except God s own Spirit. And we have received God s Spirit (not the world s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us. 1 Corinthians 2:10-12 (NLT) 4.
5. I WOULD NEVER EXPERIENCE RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER BELIEVERS Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:13 (NLT) Don t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you? 1 Corinthians 3:16 (NLT) The church then had peace throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, and it became stronger as the believers lived in the fear of the Lord. And with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it also grew in numbers. Acts 9:31 (NLT) 5.
