He anointed us, 22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. 4b 2 Corinthians 5:5 5 Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. 4c Ephesians 1:13-14 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. *He makes known, discloses, proclaims, announces, acknowledges, uncovers, points out, unveils. 9
EXHIBIT 7 HOLY SPIRIT AS UNIFIER * TO BELIEVERS IN JESUS CHRIST 7a 2 Corinthians 13:14 14 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. 7b Philippians 2:1-4 1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 7c Ephesians 4:3-4 3 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit just as you were called to one hope when you were called. 7d Ephesians 2:19-22 19 you are fellow citizens with God s people and members of God s household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. 7e 1 Corinthians 12:4-13 4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men. 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines. 12 The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body. *One who unites, brings together, merges, blends, combines, melds. 10
EXHIBIT 8 HOLY SPIRIT AS THE CLARIFIER * WHO HELPS BELIEVERS IN JESUS CHRIST UNDERSTAND GOD S WORDS AND THOUGHTS 8a Ephesians 5:17-18 17 understand what the Lord s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 8b Job 32:7-8 7 I thought, Age should speak; advanced years should teach wisdom. 8 But it is the Spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty, that gives him understanding. 8c John 16:15 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. 8d John 3:34 34 For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit. 8e 1 Corinthians 2:11-12 11.no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. *One who makes understandable, renders intelligible, makes clear, illuminates, resolves, discloses, brings to light. 11
EXHIBIT 9 HOLY SPIRIT AS THE TEACHER * TO BELIEVERS IN JESUS CHRIST 9a John 14:25-26 25 All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 9b Luke 12:11-12 11 do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, 12 for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say. 9c Psalm 143:10 10 Teach me to do you will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground. 9d 1 Corinthians 2:13 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to spiritual men. 9e 1 Thessalonians 4:7-8 7 For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. 8 Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit. *Synonyms: instructor, educator, rabbi, tutor, master, missionary. 12
EXHIBIT 10 HOLY SPIRIT AS THE LEADER * TO BELIEVERS IN JESUS CHRIST 10a Matthew 4:1-3 1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread. 10b John 16:13 13 the Spirit of truth will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 10c Romans 8:13-14 13 For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 10e Hebrews 9:14 14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to useless rituals, so that we may serve the living God! 10d Isaiah 30:1 1 Woe to the obstinate children, declares the LORD, to those who carry out plans that are not mine, forming an alliance, but not by my Spirit, heaping sin upon sin. 10e Galatians 5:16-17 16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. *One who leads, guides, plans, gives direction, advises, commands, manages, supervises. 13
EXHIBIT 11 HOLY SPIRIT AS THE ENCOURAGER * TO BELIEVERS IN JESUS CHRIST 11a Ephesians 1:17 17 keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 11b Romans 15:13 13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. 11c Jude 1:20 20 But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. 11d Ephesians 3:16-17 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. 11e 2 Timothy 1:7 7 For God did not give us a Spirit of timidity, but a Spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. 11f Romans 15:5-6 5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a Spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, 6 so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. *One who encourages believers to: exercise wisdom, to obey, to pray, to trust God, and to act. 14
EXHIBIT 12 HOLY SPIRIT AS THE PROTECTOR * TO BELIEVERS IN JESUS CHRIST 12a 1 Samuel 16:23 23 Whenever the Spirit from God came upon Saul, David would take his harp and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him. 12b Haggai 2:4-5 4. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD, and work. For I am with you, declares the LORD Almighty. 5 This is what I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt. And my Spirit remains among you. Do not fear. 12c Ezekiel 3:14 14 The Spirit then lifted me up and took me away with the strong hand of the LORD upon me. 12d Psalm 51:11-12 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing Spirit, to sustain me. 12e Ephesians 3:16 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being. 12f Romans 8:15 15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. 12g Romans 8:9 9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. 12h 2 Timothy 1:14 14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. 12i Ephesians 6:14-17 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. *Synonyms: defender, guardian, safekeeper, patron, benefactor, champion, advocate. 15
EXHIBIT 13 HOLY SPIRIT AS THE TRANSFORMER * TO BELIEVERS IN JESUS CHRIST WHO SUBMIT TO HIM FOR SANCTIFICATION 13a 1 Thessalonians 4:3, 8 3 It is God s will that you should be sanctified. 8 Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit. 13b Romans 8:27, 29 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God s will. 29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son. 13c 2 Thessalonians 2:13 13 God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth. 13d 1 Samuel 10:6 6 The Spirit of the LORD will come upon you in power, and you will be changed into a different person. 13e 2 Corinthians 3:18 18 And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 13f Romans 8:4-5 4 do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit. 5 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 13g Galatians 5:16-17 16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. 17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. *Separates from sin and makes holy so one becomes more and more like Jesus Christ through the believer s effort and the work of the Holy Spirit. 16
EXHIBIT 14 HOLY SPIRIT AS THE TAKER OF PHYSICAL LIFE FROM ALL PEOPLE 14a Job 34:14-15 14 If it were his intention and he withdrew his Spirit and breath, 15 all mankind would perish together and man would return to the dust. 14b Ecclesiastes 12:7 7 and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the Spirit returns to God who gave it. 14c Psalm 104:29-30 29 When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return to the dust. 30 When you send your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. 14d Psalm 146:4 4 When the Spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. 17
EXHIBIT 15 HOLY SPIRIT AS THE RESURRECTOR * WHO GIVES NEW RESURRECTED LIFE TO BELIEVERS IN JESUS CHRIST 15a 1 Peter 3:18 18 For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.
