88 SESSION 25 (A) CHANGESHANGES (A) Lesson Plan INTRODUCTION (5 MINUTES) Today we re going to take a look at the final attribute of God s character in this study. In today s session, we will discover that almighty God not only perfectly exhibits the many characteristics we ve discussed in these past weeks, but His nature never changes! This is referred to as God s immutability, and it affects every aspect of His character. In life, everything changes. Have you ever been saddened to watch a parent age or a spouse become ill or depressed Have you had vacation plans change because of a crisis, or had dear friends move away Chapter 26 God Never Changes How did these changes make you feel Why do we value stability in our lives One of the assurances we have about God s nature is that He never changes. We can count on this fact. Let s ask the Holy Spirit to teach us how God s immutability can impact our lives. Lead the group in prayer. GROUP DISCUSSION (19 MINUTES) What was the most meaningful part of today s session for you Dr. Bright made the statement, God s character is constant. How have you experienced this throughout our study In your life Dr. Bright began and ended this course with the observation, Our view of God determines our lifestyle. How have you found this to be true What has been the most important discovery for you throughout this study What actions have you taken because of what you have learned CLOSING PRAYER (1 MINUTE) Lead the group in a closing prayer. VIDEO TEACHING SEGMENT: CHANGES (20 MINUTES) The cue graphic on the videotape is Lesson 13 (the video segments are divided by attributes). Our Video Outline is found on Page 74 in the Study Guide. Let s follow along as Dr. Bright reminds us that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

(Hebrews 6:17; Philippians 1:6; Ephesians 1:14) Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Because God never changes, my future is secure and eternal. GOD: Discover His Character, Chapter 26 God Never Changes

90 SESSION 26 (B) CHANGESHANGES (B) Lesson Plan You will need a CD player and the GOD: Musical Reflections of His Character CD to begin this session. REVIEW (10 MINUTES) Begin by having your group prayerfully listen, with eyes closed, to God Never Changes on the Musical Reflections CD. Then have a concluding prayer. Today is our final session for this course. As we continue our discussion of the fact that God never changes: Why is this an important characteristic with which to end this course Is it easy or difficult for you to trust in God s unchanging nature Why BIBLE STUDY (15 MINUTES) Our final Bible Study is found on page 75 in the Study Guide. Today we will study passages in the Bible that reveal truths about our God who never changes. VIDEO ILLUSTRATION SEGMENT: THRESHOLD TO ETERNITY (8 MINUTES) LIFE APPLICATION (9 MINUTES) Chapter 27 God Gives Us Rest in Him Why do you think the producers of this video chose to end this course with this particular dramatic scene Was it effective Does death frighten you Why or why not What have we learned throughout our time together that can comfort and assure you about your eternal security There are several Life Application steps for this week, which are all very personal. As we complete this study, I want to encourage you to finish the recommended reading as well as the Life Application steps! COURSE CONCLUSION (2 MINUTES) We have learned a great deal in the past several weeks. But let s not forget to apply what we ve learned. James 1:22 says, Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says (NIV). How have you been moved to action by what we ve studied What changes are occurring in your life because of your involvement in this study Nothing will change our lives more quickly and dramatically than having a personal encounter with the living God. As His power, holiness, justice, mercy, and love become ever more real to us, our lives will change forever. By allowing the truth about Him and His marvelous character to transform us, we will experience God s best in our lives and become all He intended us to be. At this point you may want to thank everyone for participating in this study, introduce your next study, or explore other Discover God Group resources for future sessions. CLOSING PRAYER (1 MINUTE) Lead the group in a closing prayer thanking God for all you ve learned and experienced.

SESSION 26 (B) CHANGESHANGES (B) Bible Study 91 1. God s name is eternal. Read Exodus 3:11 15. a. What does I AM mean b. What authority could Moses claim because he came in the name of God c. The Lord told Moses that He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. What encouragement did that offer the Israelites who were struggling as slaves to the Egyptians d. God s name is to be remembered throughout all generations. How does that promise encourage you 2. God s statutes are timeless. Read Psalm 93. a. What does it mean that God is from the everlasting past b. The psalmist compares God s might to the thundering seas. Now that you have studied God s character, what are some ways you would describe Him c. What does it mean that God s statutes stand firm d. How has that proven true in your life 3. God s covenant is everlasting. Read Hebrews 13:20,21. a. In what ways have you experienced God as the God of peace b. What is the eternal covenant c. How does the eternal covenant in verse 20 make possible the transformation in us described in verse 21 d. Why will Jesus Christ be glorified forever e. What are some ways we can glorify Jesus today

92 SESSION 26 (B) CHANGESHANGES (B) Life Application WRITE IT ON YOUR HEART Memorize the following statement and verses. When you encounter situations during this week where you need to remember that God never changes, claim these promises by faith. Because God never changes, my future is secure and eternal. James 1:17 Whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God above, who created all heaven s lights. Unlike them, He never changes or casts shifting shadows. Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. EXALT YOUR GOD Worship God with the powerful words of the hymn Immortal, Invisible. Immortal, invisible, God only wise, In light inaccessible hid from our eyes, Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise. To all, life Thou givest to both great and small, In all life Thou livest, the true life of all; We blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, And wither and perish but naught changeth Thee. REFLECT HIS IMAGE By nature, we humans change. We grow older, taller, thinner, or fatter, and our emotions fluctuate. But we can reflect God s unchanging nature by being people who are consistent in our relationships with others and in our love for God. Examine your heart and ask God to make you a person who perseveres no matter what, a person who, as Jesus said, endures to the end (Matthew 10:22).

Life Application (continued) 93 COUNT ON GOD Paul writes in Philippians 1:6, I am sure that God, who began the good work within you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on that day when Christ Jesus comes back again. Because God never changes, He will never change His mind, go back on His word, or leave unfinished what He started. Every day He is molding you, preparing you to spend eternity with Him and He will complete what He has begun. Trust our unchanging God to make you all you can be. OBEY GOD God never changes, and His standards do not vacillate based on the latest fashion or opinion poll. Society s perception of right and wrong may be different from what it was just a generation ago, but this does not alter the truth. Take God s commands seriously. Submit to His Word and obey Him in everything today. SHARE HIS MAJESTY Jesus stated in Matthew 24:35, Heaven and earth will disappear, but My words will remain forever. The Bible has encouraged and challenged individuals for thousands of years and still speaks today. Do you know someone who needs to be encouraged about God s unchanging Word Choose a verse that has ministered to you and encourage that person today.
