Service of Praise with Assignment of Calls The Fifth Week of Easter May 1, 2013 7:00 p.m. CONCORDIA SEMINARY ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI
In Nomine Jesu PRELUDE I Bind unto Myself Today, arr. This I tell you all: if two of you put yourselves in agreement on earth in order to ask for something in prayer, My father who is in heaven, He will give it to you all. Because where two or three unite themselves in my name, there I am, in the middle of them. Bell Peal As the hymn is introduced, please stand and face the processional cross, turning as it passes you. THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN Awake, My Heart, with Gladness (LSB 467) 2
5 The world against me rages, Its fury I disdain; Though bitter war it wages, Its work is all in vain. My heart from care is free, No trouble troubles me. Misfortune now is play, And night is bright as day. 6 Now I will cling forever To Christ, my Savior true; My Lord will leave me never, Whate er He passes through. He rends death s iron chain; He breaks through sin and pain; He shatters hell s grim thrall; I follow Him through all. 7 He brings me to the portal That leads to bliss untold, Whereon this rhyme immortal Is found in script of gold: Who there My cross has shared Finds here a crown prepared; Who there with Me has died Shall here be glorified. THE INVOCATION Leader: In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation: Amen. L: Alleluia! Christ is risen! C: He is risen indeed! Alleluia! THE COLLECT FOR THE FIFTH WEEK OF EASTER L: Let us pray O God, You make the minds of Your faithful to be of one will. Grant that we may love what You have commanded and desire what You promise, that among the many changes of this world our hearts may be fixed where true joys are found; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. THE READING John 16:12-22 L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Sit THE SERMON THE RESPONSE Listen, God is Calling (LSB 833) THE ASSIGNMENT OF CALLS THE ANTHEM The Hidden Stream that Feeds Text: Thomas H. Troeger (from Borrowed Light: Hymn Texts, Prayers, and Poems) Music: Eleanor Daley The hidden stream that feeds our daily acts of care, springs forth in worship when Christ leads the church in song and prayer. Lord, through our lives may others hear your living waters drawing near. The stream runs clear and deep and tastes of heaven s skies, and where its ceaseless currents sweep flows life that never dies. Lord, through our lives may others hear your living waters drawing near. A heart of stone and dust, of withered hopes and dreams, becomes a spring of faith and trust by drinking from these streams. Lord, through our lives may others hear your living waters drawing near. We leave this watered place to work on rocky ground, yet even the streams of grace sustain our daily round. Lord, through our lives may others hear your living waters drawing near. 5
Stand THE PRAYERS L: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. L: Let us pray O Heavenly Father, the Author of all wisdom, understanding, and true strength, we ask You to look mercifully upon Your servants and send Your Holy Spirit into their hearts, that when they must join to fight in the field for the glory of Your holy name, then they, being strengthened with the defense of Your right hand, may stand in the confession of Your faith and of Your truth, and continue in the same unto the end; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Candidates: Almighty and gracious God, You have commanded us to pray that You would send forth laborers into your harvest; in Your mercy make us true servants of Your Word with Your saving Gospel in our hearts and on our lips that we may truly fulfill Your command and do those things which are well-pleasing to You; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. L: O Lord, You have power over death and the grave and have shown us Your wonderful grace in rescuing us from sin. We thank You for the blessings in the past 174 years that You have bestowed on Concordia Seminary and we thank You for the work You have given us to do together in The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. We ask You to give us grace to persevere in our present work so that Your honor and glory are magnified everywhere; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. THE OUR FATHER L: Taught by our Lord and trusting His promises, we are bold to pray: C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 6
THE BENEDICTION L: The blessing of the Lord, the Father Almighty, the blessing of X Christ, the Lamb who was slain and raised again, and the blessing of the Spirit of Truth, be upon you and remain with you forever. THE RECESSIONAL HYMN The Day Thou Gavest (LSB 886) 5 So be it, Lord! Thy throne shall never, Like earth s proud empires, pass away; Thy kingdom stands and grows forever, Till all Thy creatures own Thy sway. THE POSTLUDE Soli Deo Gloria 7
