1. 1. 2. Prospectus f M.Phil & Ph.D Programmes UNIVERSITY Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University (Dr. BRAOU), fmerly known as Andhra Pradesh Open University, is the first open university in India. It was established by an Act of A.P. State Legislature in 1982. Its primary objective is to provide opptunities f higher education to all sections of the society and to cater to the changing individual and societal needs. The motto of the University is EDUCATION FOR ALL. The university is presently offering various programmes through Faculties of Arts, Commerce, Education, Sciences and Social Sciences with an annual enrolment of over one-lakh students. The headquarters of the University, which is operating through a wide netwk of 23 Regional Codination Centres and me than 200 Study Centres spread all over the States of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, is located in Hyderabad. The objectives of the university are: To provide educational opptunities to those students who could not take advantage of conventional institutions of higher learning. To provide equality of higher educational opptunities through distance mode f a large segment of the population, including those in employment, women (including house-wives) and adults who wish to upgrade their education acquire knowledge and studies in various fields. To provide flexibility with regard to eligibility f enrolment, age of entry, choice of courses, methods of learning, conduct of examinations and operation of the programmes. To complement the programmes of the existing universities in the field of higher learning so as to maintain the highest standards on par with the best universities in the country. To offer degree programmes and non-degree certificate courses f the benefit of the wking population in various fields and f the benefit of those who wish to enrich their lives by studying subjects of cultural and aesthetic values. To make provision f research and f the advancement and dissemination of knowledge. To serve as a source of continuing education, consultancy and to provide equal access to knowledge and higher education. 2. Academic Branch In der to fulfill and achieve the above objectives, the university has created a separate branch viz., Academic Branch that is headed by a Direct. The branch consists of five faculties viz., Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Commerce, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Sciences and Faculty of Social Sciences. The faculty members are responsible to plan, design, develop and maintain various academic programmes of the university accding to the needs and requirements of the students and the job-market from the level of certificate courses to research programmes. 3. Course Delivery The university adopts a multi-media approach f instruction by: supplying printed course material prepared by experts in the field; arranging contact-cum-counseling classes; broadcasting radio lessons and radio phone in programmes telecasting video lessons; 1

telecasting teleconference programmes; and making available audio and video lessons; 4. Degree of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Programme 4.0 Departments offering M.Phil. Programmes The university offers research programmes leading to the award of Degree of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in the following disciplines: Faculty of Arts : 1. English 2. Hindi 3. Sociology 4.1 Eligibility f Admission into the Programme A candidate should possess a Master s Degree with a minimum of 55% (50% in the case of SC/ST candidates) in the subject concerned in any allied subject from a recognized university. A candidate should have passed in UGC/CSIR / JRF / NET / SLET / GATE 4.2 Admission Procedure i) Admission in to the M.Phil. programme shall be made through a written test. The written test shall consist of one paper of two hours duration in the subject in which the candidate seeks admission into the M.Phil. programme and shall carry 100 marks. The qualifying marks in the written test are 40% (35% in the case of SC/ST candidates). ii) UGC/CSIR / JRF / NET / SLET / GATE passed applicants shall be exempted from the written test. However they have to appear f an interview. iii) Those who qualify at the written test and the applicants qualified in UGC/CSIR / JRF / NET / SLET / GATE shall be called f an interview, which carries 20 marks, where the candidates will be tested in analytical abilities, and research bent of mind and understanding of the subject. The candidates should secure a minimum of 40% in interview (35 % in the case of SC/ST candidates) to qualify f admission. iv) The candidates who qualify in both written test and interview shall be considered f admission in to the M.Phil. programme of the subject concerned based on the availability of seats. v) Admissions shall be made once a year. 4.3 Programme of Study i) The M.Phil. programme of study consists of two parts 2

ii) iii) iv) Part - I: Course Wk, and Part - II: Dissertation The Part - I: course wk, involves the study of a minimum of two courses viz. a) Research Methodology, and b) Broad Field of Research. Part - I examination shall be conducted after the course wk within one year from the date of admission. F the successful completion of the programme, the candidate has to prepare a dissertation based on his / her own independent research under the guidance of a research supervis. The candidate has to submit the dissertation within the stipulated period. 4.4 Duration of the Programme i) The minimum period of study f M.Phil. shall be two years from the date of admission, out of which one semester is allotted to the course wk and remaining period is f the preparation of the dissertation. ii) The minimum period prescribed f completion of M.Phil. programme shall be one year from the date of completion of Part-I examination. The maximum period allowed is three years from the date of admission. iii) The candidate who could not complete the programme within the stipulated period, may be given an extension of not me than one year, if warranted by the merits of the case. 4.5 Medium The medium of instruction and examination f M.Phil. entrance test, course wk and dissertation shall be in English. In case of languages, the medium shall be in the language concerned. 4.6 Payment of Fee i) The candidate has to pay an amount of Rs.10,000/-(Rupees Ten Thousand only) per annum f two years f M.Phil. towards tuition fee and Rs.1,000/- (Rupees One Thousand only) towards admission fee. In addition to this, the Science students having practical component have to bear the cost of consumables / field wk / hiring of equipments etc. ii) The candidate who could not submit the dissertation within the minimum period of two years have to pay at the rate of Rs.1,000/- (Rupees One Thousand only) f the remaining period prescribed to continue the M.Phil programme. iii) The candidate who could not submit the dissertation within the maximum period prescribed will be allowed f an extension of the period f one me year on the payment of Rs.2,000/-/ (Rupees Two Thousand only). iv) M.Phil. candidate who could not complete the programme, within the maximum period prescribed and one year extended period is permitted to re-register f the programme by paying an amount of Rs Rs.10,000/- (Rupees Ten Thousand only) towards re-registration fee. This will be valid f one year only and no further extension will be given. v) M.Phil. candidate has to pay an amount of Rs.5,000/- (Rupees Five Thousand only) at the time of submission of dissertation towards adjudication fee. The fee particulars given above are subject to revision from time to time. 4.7 Teaching Methods i) Multi-media teaching methods are used f instruction and f research guidance. ii) The university will ganize Personal Contact Programmes (PCP) f a period of one semester f course wk. Attending PCP is mandaty on the part of the candidate. 4.8 Periodical Repts 3

The candidate is required to submit the periodical repts once in every six months to the head of the department concerned through research supervis. 4.9 Examination of Course Wk i) The examination of M.Phil. programme shall consist of two parts: Part - I: Examination of the course wk; Part - II: Adjudication of the dissertation. ii) The Part - I: examination shall consist of two courses; a. Research Methodology, and b) Broad Field of research. iii) Research Methodology course is common to all the candidates of the subject concerned. Broad field of research implies the subject in which the candidate proposes to do the research wk f M.Phil. iv) Each course is f 100 marks and the pass marks shall be 50 per cent. The duration of the examination is of 3 hours. v) The candidate shall be allowed to take two chances to complete the Part I (course wk) examination. vi) The Part - I examination shall be conducted within one year from the date of admission of the candidate to the programme at the university head quarters. 4.10 Submission of Dissertation i) The candidate is allowed to submit his / her dissertation only after passing Part - I examination. ii) The candidate is required to give seminars time to time befe making a final presentation (i.e. Pre-submission seminar) on the progress of the research wk. The final presentation (pre-submission seminar) on the research wk shall be befe submitting the dissertation. iii) A pri intimation of one month shall be given by the candidate befe making the final presentation on the research wk to enable the university to take further necessary action. The candidate, while submitting the dissertation, has to take care of the following points (check list): a. Four copies of hard-bound computer typed dissertation along with soft copy; b. Four copies of the abstract of the dissertation; c. Receipt showing that the prescribed fee has been paid; d. No Dues Certificate from the Library, SSB and Academic Branch; e. A copy of the Memandum of Marks of the Part I examination; f. A certificate from the supervis to the effect that the dissertation is based on the iginal wk done by the candidate under his / her supervision; g. A declaration from the candidate to the effect that the dissertation does not constitute part of any dissertation / monograph submitted f a degree diploma of this any other university /institute. 4.11 Viva-voce Examination After receiving the repts from the adjudicats, the Dean of the faculty concerned would conduct the open viva - voce examination as per the academic rules and regulations of research programmes. 4.12 Revision / Resubmission of the Dissertation i) The candidate whose dissertation is recommended f revision may be permitted to resubmit the dissertation after though revision within six months from the date of the recommendation. 4

ii) The comments and suggestions, if any, f revision given by the adjudicats shall be communicated by the Controller of Examinations to the candidate, head of the department concerned and to the supervis. iii) Permission of the chairperson, RPC is necessary if the revised dissertation is resubmitted after a lapse of six months from the date of recommendation. No resubmission shall dinarily be permitted after a lapse of one year. iv) The revised dissertation shall be sent to the same adjudicats. v) The candidate, whose dissertation is rejected, will be permitted to resubmit the revised dissertation after a minimum period of six months but within a maximum period of one year. If the dissertation is rejected once again by the adjudicats, the candidate will not be given a second chance to resubmit the dissertation. vi) The candidate has to pay the prescribed fee as mentioned at 4.6 (iv) at the time of resubmitting the dissertation. 4.13 Cancellation of Registration i) The registration of a M.Phil. candidate stands cancelled if the chairperson, RPC accepts the application f cancellation submitted by the candidate through proper channel. ii) The chairperson, RPC may cancel the registration of a scholar on the recommendation of after consulting the supervis if the progress of his / her research wk is unsatisfacty. iii) The registration stands cancelled if the candidate has not passed the written test of Part - I, after availing the prescribed number of chances (two) given to him / her does not submit the dissertation within the prescribed period. 4.14 Award of Degree Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University shall award the M.Phil. degree to all the eligible candidates only after successful completion of course wk, approval of the dissertation by the adjudicats and conduct of viva-voce examination by the faculty concerned. 4.15 Deposity with UGC Following the successful completion of the evaluation process and announcements of the award of M.Phil. degree, the university submits a soft copy of the M.Phil. dissertation to the UGC within a period of thirty days, f hosting the same in INFLIBNET, accessible to all institutions / universities. 5. Degree of Doct of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programme 5.0 Departments offering Ph.D. Programmes The university offers research programmes leading to the award of Degree of Doct of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in the following disciplines: Faculty of Arts : 1. The candidates should secure a minimum of 40% in interview (35 % in the case of SC/ST candidates) to qualify f admission. iv) At the time of interview, the candidate has to submit a topic along with the research proposal. v) The candidates who qualify in both written test and interview shall be considered f admission in to the Ph.D. programme of the subject concerned based on the availability of seats. vi) Admissions shall be made once a year. 5.3 Programme of Study i) The Ph.D. programme of study consists of two parts - Part - I: Course wk ( Pre-Ph.D. ) : Part - II: Thesis writing ii) The Part-1, course wk (Pre-Ph.D.) involves the study of a minimum of two courses viz. a) Research Methodology, and b) Field of Research. Part - I (Pre-Ph.D) examination shall be conducted after the course wk within one year from the date of admission. iii) The candidates possessing M.Phil. degree offered by Dr. BRAOU any other recognized university are exempted from writing examination in course wk (Pre- Ph.D.). iv) The candidates without the M.Phil. degree and are directly admitted into Ph.D. programme shall pursue course wk. v) F the successful completion of the programme, the candidate has to write a thesis based on his / her own independent research under the guidance of a research supervis. vi) The candidate has to submit the thesis within the stipulated period. 6

5.4 Duration of the Programme i) The minimum period of study f Ph.D. shall be three years from the date of admission, out of which one semester is allotted to the course wk and remaining period is f the writing the thesis. ii) However, f the candidates admitted with M.Phil. degree, the minimum period f submission of thesis is two years only. The maximum period allowed is five years in both the cases. iii) The candidate who could not complete the programme within the stipulated period, may be given an extension of not me than one year, if warranted by the merits of the case. 5.5 Medium The medium of instruction and examination f Ph,D. entrance test, Pre-Ph.D. and f writing the thesis shall be in English. This will be valid f one year only and no further extension will be given. v) The candidate has to pay an amount of Rs. 10,000/- (Rupees Ten Thousand only) at the time of submission of thesis towards adjudication fee. Field of Research implies the broad area of the subject in which the candidate proposes to do the research wk f Ph.D. iv) Each course is f 100 marks and the pass marks shall be 50 per cent. The duration of the examination is of 3 hours. v) The candidate shall be allowed to take two chances to complete the Part - I (Pre- Ph.D.) examination. vi) The Pre-Ph.D. examination shall be conducted within one year from the date of admission of the candidate to the programme at the university head quarters. 5.10 Submission of Thesis i) The candidate is allowed to submit his/her thesis only after passing Pre-Ph.D. examination. The thesis f Ph.D. degree must be a significant contribution to the knowledge in the subject and offer evidence of iginality and scholarship. ii) The candidate is required to give seminars time to time befe making a final presentation (i.e. Pre-submission seminar) on the progress of the research wk. The final presentation (pre-submission seminar) on the research wk shall be befe submitting the thesis. iii) A pri intimation of one month shall be given by the candidate befe making the final presentation on the research wk to enable the university to take further necessary action. iv) The candidate, while submitting the thesis, has to take care of the following points (check list): a. Five copies of hard-bound computer typed thesis along with soft copy; b. Five copies of the abstract of the thesis; c. Receipt showing that the prescribed fee has been paid; d. No Dues Certificate from the Library, SSB and Academic Branch; e. copy of the Memandum of Marks of the Part I examination; f. A certificate from the supervis to the effect that the thesis is based on the iginal wk done by the candidate under his /her supervision; g. A declaration from the candidate to the effect that the thesis does not constitute part of any thesis/dissertation/monograph submitted f a degree diploma of this any other university /institute. 5.11 Viva-voce Examination After receiving the repts from the adjudicats, the Dean of the faculty concerned would conduct the open viva - voce examination as per the academic rules and regulations of research programmes. 5.12 Revision/Re-submission of the Thesis: i) The candidate has to revise and resubmit the thesis if all the three adjudicats recommend revision if two of the three adjudicats recommend revision if one adjudicat recommends the award, the second recommends revision and the third recommends rejection. ii) The thesis of the candidate will be rejected 8

if all the three adjudicats unanimously recommend the rejection of the thesis if two of the three adjudicats recommend the rejection of the thesis. iii) A candidate whose thesis is recommended f revision may be permitted to resubmit the thesis after though revision within one year of the recommendation. The comments and suggestions, if any, f revision given by the adjudicats shall be communicated by the Controller of Examinations to the candidate, head of the department concerned and to the supervis. Permission of the chairperson, RPC is necessary if the revised thesis is re-submitted after a lapse of one year from the date of recommendation. No re-submission shall dinarily be permitted after a lapse of two years. v) The revised thesis shall be sent to the same adjudicats. vii) The candidate has to pay the prescribed fee as mentioned at 5.6 (iv) at the time of resubmitting the thesis. 5.13 Cancellation of Registration i) The registration of a Ph.D. scholar stands cancelled if the chairperson, RPC accepts the application f cancellation submitted by the candidate through proper channel. ii) The chairperson, RPC may cancel the registration of a Ph.D. scholar on the recommendation of after consulting the supervis if the progress of his / her research wk is unsatisfacty. iii) The registration stands cancelled if the candidate has not passed the Pre-Ph.D. examination after availing the prescribed number of chances (two) given to him / her does not submit the thesis within the prescribed period. 5.14 Award of Degree Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Open University shall award the Ph.D. degree to all the eligible candidates only after successful completion of course wk, approval of the thesis by the adjudicats and conduct of viva-voce examination by the faculty concerned. 5.15 Deposity with UGC Following the successful completion of the evaluation process and announcements of the award of Ph.D. degree, the university submits a soft copy of the Ph.D. thesis to the UGC within a period of thirty days, f hosting the same in INFLIBNET, accessible to all institutions / /universities. ******************** 9
