AMERICAN CRIMINAL JUSTICE ASSOCIATION LAMBDA ALPHA EPSILON ACJA/LAE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM In 1979, the Board of Directors, with the full endorsement of the American Criminal Justice Association's general membership, established a Scholarship Program which makes annual scholarship awards to members who are upper or lower division students or graduate students enrolled in a course of study in the criminal justice field. Financial support for the Program is supported through membership dues. Scholarship decisions are made by the Scholarship Committee, who is responsible for setting competition standards and rules determining successful winners. Awards are announced at the Annual Conference of the Association. Questions concerning the Scholarship Program or any part of this application packet should be directed to the Scholarship Chairman, Craig Laker at (260) 665-4862 or email: lakerc@trine.edu. SIZE OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS Three categories of awards have been established to include a Graduate Division, an Upper Division, and a Lower Division. Three awards will be dispersed per category in the following manner: 1 st PLACE $400 2 nd PLACE $200 3 RD PLACE $100 WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE SCHOLARSHIPS Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen. They must be a member of an ACJA/LAE chapter or Member-at-Large in good standing (both at the time of submission and at the time of the awards). Membership applications may accompany entries. The categories of competition based on academic level are: Graduate Level for those enrolled in an accredited post-graduate program such as a Master s or Doctorate Degree program; Upper Division Level for those enrolled in an accredited undergraduate degree program who have completed a minimum of 70/105 semester hours of course work; and Lower Division Level for those enrolled in an accredited undergraduate degree program who have completed no more than 70/105 semester hours and no less than 12 semester hours/18 quarter hours. All applicants must be currently enrolled in a recognized course of study directly (or indirectly) associated with the criminal justice field. They must have completed at least two semesters or three quarters of accredited course work. All applicants must have achieved a minimum overall grade point average (GPA) of a 3.0 on a scale of 4.0. Applicants must be currently enrolled with a minimum course load of at least twothirds (2/3) of full-time enrollment as established by the applicant's college or university. (Example: If 12 hours is a full load, minimum would be 8 hours; 9 hours full-time would be a minimum of 6 hours) 2

WHEN SHOULD THE APPLICATION BE FILLED OUT Applications should be requested and returned on or before December 31, 2015 in order to be considered for the 2016 Awards. Mail FIVE COPIES of the completed application to the Scholarship Committee Chairman named on the front of the Application packet. It is recommended that applicants obtain a Certificate of Mailing from the post office at the time the application is mailed as evidence that it was mailed by the appropriate deadline or priority filing date. HOW IS SELECTION OF SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS MADE Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of criteria established by the Scholarship Committee. The Scholarship Committee is appointed by the President of the Association with approval of the Executive Board. No two members of the Committee come from the same region in the Association. The criteria chosen by the Committee to evaluate applicants involves the following factors: Overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better on a scale of 4.0. GPA of basic courses completed in criminal justice or related field of study. Statement of career and educational goals of student. Financial need, race, age, sex, religion, or national origin will not be considered in selection recipients. HOW DO SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS RECEIVE THE FUNDS Winners will be announced and stipends will be presented at the Awards Banquet at the 2016 National Conference. Certificates will also be presented to the winners. If the recipient does not attend the National Conference, the certificate and stipend will be mailed directly to the recipient after the National Conference to be used by him/her for general needs including tuition costs, books, room and board, or other expenses incurred while attending school. FILLING OUT SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION When you fill out this form, please be sure to: 1. Complete the application check list on page 8 before you return the application. 2. Type application or use a pen with black or dark ink; do not use a pencil. 3. Print carefully so that your form will be easy to read. 4. Complete all portions of the application and mail five (5) copies of the application. Incomplete applications WILL NOT be considered for awards. ADDITIONAL SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS In addition to the previous information, the following documents must accompany each application: OFFICIAL CERTIFIED SCHOOL TRANSCRIPTS One Official Certified Grade Transcript (unopened) MUST be attached to one Application from the college/university you are attending. Attached a copy of your transcript to the other four (4) Applications. (Members should order two transcripts from the college/university; one to send unopened and one to copy). CERTIFICATION OF ENROLLMENT STATUS A letter from the college/university registrar MUST be attached to the Application certifying that the applicant is currently enrolled in at least two-thirds (2/3) of a normal full course load as determined by that institution. CAREER AND EDUCATIONAL GOALS STATEMENT Applicants MUST complete the enclosed career and educational goals statement form. The statement should outline your basic educational and career objectives and explain how you plan to fulfill these goals and how the Scholarship would help you attain these objectives. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION (OPTIONAL) A letter(s) of recommendation MAY be submitted from an ACJA/LAE chapter officer detailing applicant's work in the chapter. Additional letters of recommendation may be submitted from (1) a college/university faculty member explaining applicant's scholastic achievements, and/or (2) chapter faculty advisor describing applicant's work on behalf of the chapter. These letters of recommendation may be submitted with the application, but they will be used for background information only, not for evaluation. 7

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION CHECK LIST Please answer the following questions and statements and submit completed letters, grades, and completed papers to: Craig Laker, Scholarship Chairman, ACJA-LAE, PO Box 601047, Sacramento, CA 95860-1047. NOTE: ALL BOXES MUST BE CHECKED TO QUALIFY FOR SCHOLARSHIP. PLEASE SUBMIT FIVE COPIES OF ALL MATERIALS TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THE AWARD. I am a member in good standing of ACJA/LAE at the time of submission of the Application (2016 initiation fee or dues have been paid or are included with this Application). ATTENTION: Membership is verified at the time the Scholarship Application is received. If you pay your dues through your local chapter, be sure your dues have been sent to the National Office by the Advisor or Chapter Officer in charge of initiation / dues on or before January 31 st. If your dues are not paid by January 31 st (either individually or by your chapter), you will be disqualified from the Competition. I am currently enrolled in a recognized course of study directly (or indirectly) associated with the criminal justice field. I have submitted one (1) Official Certified Grade Transcript and four (4) copies of my Certified Grade Transcript attached to the five (5) Applications. I have submitted a letter from my college/university registrar certifying that I am currently enrolled in at least two-thirds (2/3) of a normal full course load as determined by the institution.
