Why Integration? Integrated lessons encourage students to think across subject areas, make connections, and navigate real-world situations. Integration allows teachers to accommodate more content into the curriculum. There are many benefits to integration. Integrated lessons encourage students to think across subject areas. Integrated lessons also allow students to make connections and to navigate real-world situations. Teaching integrated lessons allows teachers to fit more content into the curriculum. 9

Subject Integration Mathematics Integration: Students work with the calculation 1 mile =.97 pounds of air pollution* to determine how much air pollution Judy is creating each day. They use mathematics in a real-world context by multiplying and adding to calculate the amount of air pollution Judy produces. English Language Arts Integration: Students write opinion pieces convincing Pollutey Judy of the importance of making safe and eco-friendly transportation decisions. Health Integration: Students identify ways to increase, monitor, encourage, and promote physical activity. * http://www.youcanbikethere.com/content/environmental-benefits-0 In Prescribe a Pollution Diet, students work with the calculation 1 mile =.97 pounds of air pollution to determine how much air pollution Judy is creating each day. They use mathematics in a real-world context by multiplying and adding to calculate the amount of air pollution Judy produces. At the end of the lesson, students write opinion pieces convincing Pollutey Judy of the importance of making more ecofriendly transportation decisions. Several health standards are addressed through this lesson as students identify ways to increase, monitor, encourage, and promote physical activity. 10

Integration: A Closer Look Lesson 3: Prescribe a Pollution Diet Before prescribing a pollution diet to Pollutey Judy, students work together to evaluate the pros and cons of different modes of transportation, consider the safety of each mode of transportation, and brainstorm how to stay safe while using each mode of transportation. Pollutey Judy drives everywhere and never carpools. Students use the calculation 1 mile =.97 pounds of air pollution* to determine how much air pollution Judy is creating each day. Each student works to put Judy on a pollution diet, suggesting ways she can spare the air. Students calculate how much air pollution is saved per day when Judy is on her pollution diet and write opinion pieces convincing Judy of the importance of making safe and eco-friendly transportation decisions. * http://www.youcanbikethere.com/content/environmental-benefits-0 Let s take a closer look at how one of the lessons is integrated with other subject areas. We ll start by exploring the content of this lesson. In Prescribe a Pollution Diet, students work to put Pollutey Judy on a pollution diet. They consider the safety of each mode of transportation and brainstorm how to stay safe while using each mode of transportation. Pollutey Judy drives everywhere and never carpools. She drives out of convenience and doesn t realize the impact her choices have on the environment. In this lesson, students use the calculation 1 mile =.97 pounds of air pollution to determine how much air pollution Judy is creating each day.
