Adelaide Smart City The Opportunity adelaidesmartcity.com.au

THE EMERGING CURRENCY OF A KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY IS THE SMART IMPLEMENTATION OF GOOD IDEAS. THIS IS QUICKLY BECOMING THE MOST IMPORTANT ECONOMIC DRIVER FOR SMART CITIES. Our smarter, better connected future 2

adelaidesmartcity.com.au Introductory Message from Gail Gago, Minister for Science and Information Economy, South Australia and Martin Haese, Lord Mayor, City of Adelaide. Adelaide is embracing a better connected, more sustainable future. This prospectus sets out an exciting and imaginative proposition for Adelaide: to grasp the opportunities presented by the evolution of the Internet. The Internet of Everything is the next logical step in the Internet revolution, allowing everyday objects to be sensed across networks and integrating the physical world and computer-based systems. The resulting efficiency and economic benefit will transform one of the world s most liveable cities into one that is even more connected and more responsive to human needs, in ways we are only now starting to imagine. We re well on the way there. As a Cisco Lighthouse City, with the ground-breaking Adelaide Free Wi-Fi network, a world class reputation as a learning city and an entrepreneurial ecosystem that is sparking with potential, we have all the elements for success. So, together with global technology leader Cisco, the South Australian Government and the Adelaide CIty Council have created the next step: the Adelaide Smart City Studio. The technology that supports the Adelaide Smart City Studio represents a massive and far-sighted opportunity for Adelaide to reinvent itself. Adelaide Smart City Studio will nurture the entrepreneurial creativity and energy of our innovators and showcase the results. We re making a space for passionate people with ideas bursting to be transformed into applications, products, jobs and prosperity for the 21st century. We invite you along for this exciting journey. 3

ADELAIDE SMART CITY Our smarter, better connected future 4

The emerging currency of a knowledge economy is the smart implementation of good ideas. This is becoming the most important economic driver for smart cities. The smart city market will be valued at $1.565 trillion in 2020. Frost & Sullivan Megatrends Report M920-MT August 2013 As one of Cisco s Lighthouse Cities, Adelaide is distinctively positioned to become a globally-recognized smart city and capitalize on the Internet of Everything innovations that will drive significant future economic growth worldwide. Dr Anil Menon President Smart+Connected Communities adelaidesmartcity.com.au A SMARTER, BETTER CONNECTED CITY 5

ADELAIDE SMART CITY Imagine... A city where the effective use of sensors and smart technology have made Adelaide the world s first carbon neutral city. A city that not only helps you find a car park but let s you extend your stay from wherever you are. Our smarter, better connected future 6 A city that is so event-friendly that traffic light sequences change to ease congestion and where streetlights dim to save energy, but burn brighter when pedestrians approach. A city where streets and precincts are brought to life through music, virtual reality and projected art installations all activated and controlled by sensors and mobile phones. A city where a nurse uses a mobile app to get safely to her car at night. It tracks her path, activates lights along the way, checks in if she s delayed or off course, and sends alerts if she doesn t respond. The Internet of Everything will see the devices we use every day appliances, cars and city infrastructure talking to each other via the Internet to make our cities smarter and our lives richer and more satisfying. The most exciting applications are yet to be imagined.

THE OPPORTUNITY The Internet of Everything (IoE) is potentially the biggest business opportunity in the history of mankind. It will change the world with extraordinary and wideranging implications, affecting everyone on the planet. Research firm IDC predicts that this massive shift will generate nearly US$9 trillion in annual sales by 2020. Plamen Nedeltchev Ph.D., Distinguished IT Engineer, Cisco Leading research company Frost and Sullivan has estimated that the global smart city market alone will reach $1.565 trillion by 2020. Cisco Consulting Services predicted in 2013 that the Internet of Everything will generate $4.6 trillion of public value globally over the next decade and $14.4 trillion of commercial value. Adelaide s scale, size and layout offer significant advantages in realising our ambition to become the go-to place for exploring and exploiting the smart city opportunities of the future. The Government of South Australia, Adelaide City Council, our universities and our commercial enterprises are united in our commitment to a smart city future. We have a genuine opportunity to create, in Adelaide, an engine room for smart city innovation an open playground for innovators and entrepreneurs to build and test a range of products and services for government customers, businesses, residents and visitors. adelaidesmartcity.com.au 7

ADELAIDE SMART CITY What is a smart city? A smart city uses digital technologies to: improve performance and reduce costs better manage infrastructure and the consumption of resources engage more effectively and actively with its people enhance community wellbeing create better city experiences. ADELAIDE Adelaide is, without doubt, one of the best places in the world to live and we want to keep it that way. Right now, our economy is in transition. Like so many economies, in so many cities. Change is inevitable. We can t afford to be complacent, but we can be smart about how we shape our future prosperity. ADELAIDE SMART As a community we can choose how to create the future we want. Our city can be an engine room for innovation in the knowledge economy. The Internet of Everything is upon us. It s a new era of connectivity in our homes, businesses and cities that will bring increased productivity, new revenues, cost savings and enhanced experiences for residents and visitors. Let s not simply be a part of it; let s plan to be a pioneer. If we do this well, and together, we will be creating a future that people in other cities want too. We ll be able to generate value from our expertise, share it with the world and attract more investment to reinforce Adelaide s standing as an international brand of excellence and innovation. Our smarter, better connected future Smart Streets Smart Parking Smart Environment Smart Communities Smart Buildings Smart Transport 8

ADELAIDE SMART CITY The fact is, we are already well on the way to becoming a smart city. Cisco recognised Adelaide s potential when it made us Australia s, and the Southern Hemisphere s, first Lighthouse City. We share that mantle with just a handful of others around the world, like Copenhagen, Barcelona, Dubai, Hamburg and Chicago. adelaidesmartcity.com.au We have key elements of infrastructure to support the technologies a smart city needs. First and foremost is AdelaideFree, one of the largest, most comprehensive free public access WI-FI networks in the world. Then there s the test network of sensors being installed around the Central Business District that will improve our ability to plan, and support the development of new products and services. Technology like this will help us better manage things like energy consumption, carbon emissions and the movement of people and enable us to bring informative and entertaining city experiences to residents and visitors alike. In Adelaide, we have enormous capacity for innovation, born of an education system that attracts students from all over the world and a pedigree of advanced electronics and software development capability. This capability is nurtured and enhanced by the many advanced defence and ICT organisations that call Adelaide home. We have the best-coordinated ecosystem of support in the nation for entrepreneurs and innovators building new ventures. That s one reason why Adelaide was named Australia s most innovative region in the 2015 Australian Technologies Competition. Our famous green belt of parklands is the lungs of our beautiful city. They give us an enormous head start in becoming one of the world s first carbon-neutral cities an ambition, and commitment, shared by Adelaide City Council and the Government of South Australia. The prescient design of Adelaide has made it one of the most accessible cities in the world, and a commitment to moderating the skyline and preserving our architectural heritage has ensured that we have a city of true character. ADELAIDE SMART CITY STUDIO Adelaide City Council and the Government of South Australia are committed to building Adelaide on a smart city. Together with founding partner Cisco and other industry partners, we have established the Adelaide Smart City Studio to identify and generate commercial opportunities for creative innovators and to support their endeavours to build compelling smart city solutions. 9

ADELAIDE SMART CITY STUDIO Adelaide Smart City Studio is at 25 Pirie Street in the heart of the city. It s a collaborative venture between Adelaide City Council, the South Australian Government and leading global IT company, Cisco. Adelaide s three universities, the Australian Information Industry Association and iinet have helped guide its establishment. Now we want you to get on board. CONNECT COLLABORATE CREATE Our smarter, better connected future 10 Adelaide Smart City Studio will be more than a place to meet, work or visit. The ideas and energy generated in and around it will spark the creation of new applications and services providing safer, more efficient and more satisfying city experiences. The Studio will help Adelaide realise its ambition to be one of the world s first real smart cities. It will create opportunities for innovators to build the products and services that will be needed across the world for other cities to be truly smart. The Studio has been designed as a very flexible space that encourages collaboration in all its forms. It can be configured to provide large and small workspaces for developers, project teams or groups of students. It can work as a demonstration space, where new services, applications and technologies can be tested and explained. And it can be easily cleared to host events and meetings. Importantly, it will be a showcase for educating the community about what a smart city can be and what the smart developers and entrepreneurs in our midst are up to. Cisco has installed its latest TelePresence video conferencing technology so experts or project participants from anywhere in the city or the world beyond participate, collaborate and share knowledge. But the space is just the start. As new developers come together and new partners join the network, the technology the Studio hosts and the way people use it will evolve. More programs and resources are being developed to support the individuals and businesses leading smart city innovation. Assistance with product development and commercialisation will enable new services to be sold into global markets through partner relationships, including Cisco s global sales and marketing network. It will complement the many programs and facilities that already support innovation and entrepreneurship in South Australia.
