A: Submit an online application on our website http://nevadapilb.glsuite.us on the work card/registered employee services page; OR Download the paper application and mail the application, required documentation, Registration Application fee and an addition $10.00 paper application processing fee to one of our offices We can mail a paper application to you if you mail in a money order or cashier s check for $10.00, made payable to: Private Investigator s Licensing Board or PILB. You will need to have a Registration Work Card in order to work for one of these firms/companies. You will need a license, in order to work and represent yourself as a licensed private investigator, private patrolman, process server, repossessor or canine handler. Licensing information is available on the applicant s portion of the website. Q: How old do I have to be to work in the industries regulated pursuant to NRS 648? A: 18 years of age. Q: I am an immigrant and do not have a Social Security Card, can I get a job working in these industries? A: Yes. You must be a US Citizen or lawfully entitled to remain and work in the United States. Please refer to the Form I-9 (available on our website) for required documentation for proof of identification and employment authorization. DO NOT fill out the I-9 form and submit it for your proof of identification, we need copies of the actual documents. Q: Why do I have to be registered with the Private Investigator s Licensing Board (PILB)? Revision Date: 10/4/2011 1

A: Registration allows licensees to know that you have submitted a complete application, a Criminal History background check has been conducted, and that you are eligible for employment with a licensee. Q: How much does it cost to register and obtain a Registration Work Card with the PILB? A: It will cost $95.00 to register and submit a Registration Work Card application if you submit your fingerprints on two (2) fingerprint cards with your application. It will cost $85.00 to register and submit a Registration Work Card application if you submit your fingerprints electronically and submit the Electronic Submission Form with your application. Q: Will I receive a refund if I pay too much? A: No our office does not issue refunds. You will want to verify that the amount you are paying is the correct amount; it is your responsibility to make sure you do not overpay. Q: Does this fee include the cost to have my fingerprints taken? A: This fee includes the fees for processing your fingerprints by the Nevada Criminal History Repository and the FBI. It does not include the fees for having your fingerprints taken by an independent fingerprinting agency. (there is a list of agencies on our website). Q: Will you accept a personal check or cash? A: No personal checks or cash will be accepted. Cashier s checks and money orders made payable to the Private Investigator s Licensing Board or PILB will ONLY be accepted. Debit/Credit cards are accepted for online payment only. Our offices CANNOT process a debit/credit payment via phone or in the office. Q: Where can I get my fingerprints taken? How much will it cost? A: Fingerprints may be taken by your local law enforcement agency on fingerprint cards or electronically by an authorized business. If you are not having your fingerprints taken within the State of Nevada, you will need to submit fingerprint cards. Please refer to the locations listed on our website or in the application packet. The cost varies by agency/business; you may contact the agency/business for exact fees. Q: How often do I have to renew my Registration Work Card? A: The Registration Work Card is valid for a period of 5 years. Q: If I transfer from one city to another or change my employment am I required to re-register or obtain another work card? A: No. The Registration Work Card is statewide. The licensee will need to submit information informing the Board that you have become employed with them. You are required to notify the PILB of any contact information Revision Date: 10/4/2011 2

and address changes. Q: Can I get copies of my work history from the PILB? A: Yes, you can print your work history from our website, unless it is prior to 2006. Q: What do I do if I change my name? A: You need to submit a written notice of name change with a copy of proof of the legal name change to the PILB. Q: Can I work for a licensee if I am a convicted felon? A: No Q: If my application is incomplete, where will it be returned? A: The application will be returned to the applicant s mailing address if it s provided. You will also be charged an additional $10.00 reprocessing fee to resubmit your application. The additional $10.00 money order or cashier s check will need to be submitted with your complete application submission. Your application will remain INCOMPLETE until this fee has been received. We do not return applications submitted online, however, after 30 days your application will be withdrawn. Q: If my application is incomplete, am I eligible to work? A: No. The application must be complete and you must be in Provisional Status. Q: What is Provisional Status? A: Provisional Status is the status you are in once your application has been initially approved. This is the point that your Provisional Registration (temporary permit) has been issued. It is valid for 90 days. The issuance of a Provisional Registration does not guarantee the issuance of a permanent work card; this depends on the results of your fingerprint submission. Q: Once the application is completed and submitted to the PILB, when is the employee eligible to work? A: The employee is eligible to work once they have reached Provisional Status. They are not eligible prior to receiving their Provisional Registration. Q: I am just renewing my work card, previously issued by the Sheriff s office; do I have to submit a new application? A: You must submit a complete application, including all the required documentation (please see the Instructions/Checklist on our website), however, you are considered a RENEWAL. A full application packet must be submitted every 5 years. Q: Do I have to carry proof of registration while working? A: Yes. You must have your Provisional Registration Print-Out or approved Registration Work Card on your person at all times while working and on duty. Revision Date: 10/4/2011 3

Q: Can I renew online and how early? A: Yes. However, the earliest this can be done is 90 days prior to the Registration Work Card/Sheriff s Card expiration. Q: Can I check my status online? A: Yes; but only if you have an account established. You may login using your application/registration number and your password. Q: How long will it take before I can go to work, once I ve submitted a complete application? A: It may take approximately 2-3 weeks, depending on the current work load and the number of applications submitted at that time. Q: Do I need to fill out the application at your office in Carson City or Las Vegas? A: No. The application is available online. You can also print the paper version off of the website and mail it to either office. The fastest method to submit an application is to submit everything online. This will cut down on the amount of time it takes to process, because staff will not have to manually enter in your application and required documents. Q: Once I am registered, will you assist me in finding employment with one of your licensees? A: No, we do not provide employment services. You will need to contact licensed individuals/companies to apply for a job. Q: If I start the application process and then change my mind after submitting fingerprints and fees, will I receive a refund? A: No. You will not receive a refund for application services that have been completed by this office. Q: How long is my application valid? A: An application is only valid for 30 days after submission. If you take longer than 30 days to submit any portion of your application, you will be assessed a $10.00 reprocessing fee (money order or cashier s check only). There will only be a 30 day grace period to submit the reprocessing fee. After the grace period you will be required to submit a new application package including new registration fee. Q: Can my statewide Registration Work Card be revoked? A: Yes for the same reasons that the current work cards are denied (felony, crime of moral turpitude, illegal use or possession of a dangerous weapon, falsification/non-disclosure of arrest history on your application). Q: What happens if I do not provide my full and honest arrest history? A: Your application will be denied and you will be required to submit a $10.00 (money order or cashier s check only) reprocessing fee along with your full and honest arrest history, to resume processing. If you fail to provide your full arrest history a second time your application will be denied to the Board. Revision Date: 10/4/2011 4

Q: Are there any exams or courses required by the State of Nevada/PILB for any of the above-mentioned job titles? A: Yes. There is an exam requirement for any Registered Applicant who will be or is working for a licensed Private Patrolman. This exam must be taken every 5 years and a passing score of 100% is required. This exam is available on the website in paper form or can be taken electronically when submitting an online application. Q: If I fail the exam may I retake it? A: Yes. The exam may be taken as many times as necessary. There is a study guide available on our website for free or can be obtained at either of our offices for a fee of $5.00 (money order or cashier s check only). Q: If I am denied a registration, will I receive a refund? A: No Q: I lost my work card that was issued by METRO, what do I do? A: You will need to have your current employer fill out the yellow referral form/work card application and you will need to submit both the form and $44.00 to Metro to obtain a replacement. This is the same for changing your status from unarmed to armed. If they will not reissue your work card you must apply for a Registration Work Card through our office. Q: I have lost the Registration Work Card issued to me by the PILB, how do obtain a replacement card? A: The cost to replace the Registration Work Card is $20.00. This must be submitted in the form of a money order or cashier s check ONLY. Q: What is the Expedited fee? A: $44.00 in addition to the Registration Application fee. (money order and cashier s check only) Q: Do I list all of my arrests on the application? A: Yes, all arrests including those of which the charges were dropped, denied or dismissed. This should also include Failure To Appears that resulted in a court appearance as well as warrants that turned into Failure To Appears. You are also required to include any citations issued for criminal acts. Failure to do so may result in the denial of your Registration Application. If this occurs, you will be required to resubmit your arrest history as well as the $10.00 reprocessing fee. (money order and cashier s check only) Q: I filled out the application online, but cannot scan and upload my documents what should I do? A: You can complete the application by submitting your payment online with a credit card and then mail your remaining required documents to either of our offices. If you do not have or want to pay with a credit card, you will also want to include a money order/cashier s check with the documents you are mailing in. You can also email all your documents (except fingerprint cards) to Revision Date: 10/4/2011 5

pilbinfo@ag.nv.gov. Q: How long will it take to get my Provisional Registration and/or permanent Registration Work Card and how do I obtain them? A: It takes approximately 2-3 weeks for our office to process a COMPLETE application. If you reach Provisional Status, you will be sent an email containing your Provisional Registration, please print this out and carry it with you at all times while on duty. If you did not provide an email address you can print your Provisional Registration from our website, by going to the Consumer Resources page, clicking on Registered Employee Verification, searching your first and last name, clicking detail and then printing the page. Or if you do not have access to a computer you can pick up a copy of your Provisional Registration at either of our offices; there is a $2.00 fee for this (money order/cashier s check only). It will take approximately 3 months to receive your permanent Registration Work Card and it will be sent to the mailing address provided on your application. Q: I want to work Armed, how do I do that? A: You cannot become armed until you have an employer, which requires you to be in at least Provisional Status. Your employer will need to send you to the armed course. Once you have qualified and received your Certification of Completion (white card) you will need to provide a copy of the white card and Verification of Employment Form to either of our offices. If you have been issued an Unarmed Registration Work Card from the PILB, you will also need to submit a money order or cashier s check for $20.00 to have the card reprinted. If the card was issued by METRO, you will need to return to METRO to have the card reissued (please see the FAQ s above for information on how to do this). Revision Date: 10/4/2011 6
