TVCenter on your iphone / ipod touch via internet To allow TVCenter to stream TV data to your iphone / ipod touch, some requisitions have to be met in advance. The following chapters will guide you through the process of changing your Port Forwarding settings, which is essential for remote access from your iphone / ipod touch to your PC. You learn how to create a Dyn DNS host and account (not essential, but highly recommended) and configure your router accordingly. In addition, the advanced user will be led through the process of waking the PC remotely by using the Wake on LAN function, if desired. If you decide to use this feature in your local home network only, these configuration steps are not necessary. Note: It is highly essential to proceed with caution, since unintended changes within the settings of your PC or router may affect your internet access and compromise safety (e.g. uncontrolled hostile external access to your PC). All changes are at your own risk since we assume no liability for any damages caused by inappropriate misapplication. 1

PCTV Systems 1. How to configure port forwarding in your router and open ports in firewall applications By default your home network is secured against unwanted external access (e.g. by a firewall) from the internet. In order to allow remote access from your iphone / ipod touch to the TVCenter application within your home network, you need to configure your router's port forwarding settings. Ports can be identified by their number, commonly known as Port Number, the IP address they are associated with and the Protocol used for communication. The port which is configured in the TVCenter settings, section DistanTV mobile, needs to be opened. Note: Since security is a very sensitive topic on private networks, please proceed with caution to allow controlled access only. There are two methods to open ports: 1. Via UPnP 2. Doing it manually 1.1 How to configure your UPnP settings Go to section UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) of your router s web interface. The respective dialog (or similar) opens: Illustration is a sample depending on your router it may vary. If you allow a change within your security settings via UPnP your router will be automatically configured with the corresponding port forwarding settings, which conveniently completes your router configuration. Save your entry by clicking the Save Settings button. Note: For security reasons in many routers UPnP is disabled by default. We highly recommend enabling this feature only for the time needed to open a port and to verify the connection within your TVCenter settings, section DistanTV mobile see the following dialog. 2

Requirements for DistanTV mobile The connection is verified, if the Server state is marked Running and the indicator shines green. In case your router does not allow a change in the security settings via UPnP, you always have the possibility to forward a port manually as described in the following chapter. 1.2 How to configure your Port Forwarding Settings manually Depending on your router, go to section Security, Port Forwarding or Advanced Settings. The respective dialog opens: Illustration is a sample depending on your router it may vary. 3

PCTV Systems Set Port forwarding active for Other Applications for instance. If you choose the HTTP-Server, Port 80 is filled in automatically. Choose TCP Protocol (standard for networks). Enter the IP Address of your home network (if not done by default). To view your current home network IP address, you may use the following tool: http://checkip.dyndns.com:8245/ Note: If you are not sure, which port needs to be opened or which IP address is currently in use, you can also check your TVCenter settings, section DistanTV mobile: 1.3 How to configure your Firewall applications Now that you opened a port in your router settings, you will also need to allow this port in your firewall software. A firewall is a barrier designed to prevent unauthorized or unwanted communications between parts of a computer network. The Windows Firewall Settings are configured automatically by TVCenter, however if you use a different firewall software (e.g. Norton Internet Security, ZoneAlarm etc.) you need to configure the rules of this firewall manually. The following applications must be trusted and allowed to communicate in both directions (in and out): PCTV Systems : TVCenter PCTV Systems : Videocontrol.exe 4

Requirements for DistanTV mobile 2. Dynamic DNS (Domain Name System) In order to connect your iphone / ipod touch to your home network, you need to enter the address of your computer into the address bar of your internet browser on your iphone / ipod touch. Since the external IP address of your computer in your home network changes periodically, which makes it difficult to remotely connect to services at your computer, we recommend to use the service of a Dynamic DNS provider. It automatically links your dynamically changing IP address (machine-readable address, e.g. 12.345.678.99) with a constant hostname (human-readable name, e.g. www.abc.com) in the domain name system. Using a Dynamic DNS service therefore means you have just one fixed and easy-toremember hostname (URL address) for quick remote access to your home network. Most routers have this feature already built into their firmware. Before you create a hostname and an account, we highly recommend to check, whether your router supports Dynamic DNS and which providers are supported. Please check your router manual or verify the list of supported Dynamic DNS providers directly in your router. For further details on router configuration, please see chapter 2.2. 2.1 How to create a Dynamic DNS Host and Account: Following we will guide you through the creation process of a free Dynamic DNS host and account. Please feel free to pick a service provider of your choice and follow their instructions. We used the service of Dynamic Network Services Inc., which is just exemplary, since there are other service providers as well. Therefore we cannot provide warranty or support for any of their services. Go to: http://www.dyndns.com After choosing a hostname, you will be asked to create an account. The following dialog appears: 5

PCTV Systems Please fill in the necessary information and click the Create Account button. The following dialog opens: As requested, go to your email account and verify your DynDNS account by visiting the confirmation address given in the confirmation email from DynDNS.com Support. Note: Ensure the DynDNS.com support email may pass your spam/junk-filter settings. The following dialog opens: 6

Requirements for DistanTV mobile As requested, confirm with the Activate Services button, which completes the creation of your hostname and account. For further information on how to create an account and a Dynamic DNS host with Dynamic Network Services Inc., go to: http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/howto.html 2.2 How to configure your router with your account and hostname In order for your new Dynamic DNS host to be kept up-to-date with your constantly changing external network's IP address, your router needs to be configured accordingly. To be able to change the settings within your router you have to open the web interface of your router. To do so, enter the address of your router into the address bar of your internet browser and login with your password (usually both can be found in your router manual, unless they were changed manually). Note: Enter the IP address of your router, not the address of your home network. 7

PCTV Systems In most cases the router address is identical with the address of the Default Gateway. You can find it in the TVCenter settings, section DistanTV, or in the Network Connection Details of your operating system (within: Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center). Depending on your router, go to section DDNS (Dynamic DNS), Port Forwarding or Advanced Settings to configure the settings with your account and hostname. The respective dialog opens: Illustration is a sample depending on your router it may vary. Make sure to: Enable Dynamic DNS. Choose the Provider you used creating your hostname and account. In case you cannot find your provider, choose User Defined, which opens the additional option User-Defined-URL. Enter your Domain Name, Account and Password. Save your settings by clicking the Save Settings button, which completes your router configuration with your account and hostname and ensures that updates of your latest IP address are automatically send to your hostname. 8

Requirements for DistanTV mobile 3. Wake on LAN (Local Area Network) via iphone / ipod touch Since it is not very convenient to have the home network running to be able to have access to your computer via your iphone / ipod touch, we recommend using the computer networking standard Wake on LAN. Using this function means you can turn on your computer in your home network remotely (via internet on your iphone / ipod touch ), whereas it is sufficient to leave it on stand-by mode only. To do so, follow the instructions in the following chapters. 3.1 How to configure your PC To support the Wake on LAN function, your computer must be connected (directly or via a network hub or switch) to a LAN port on your router. The PC must support the ACPI (Advance Configuration and Power Interface) standard (standby mode, sleep or hibernate), be in the activity mode S3, S4 or S5 and allow the Wake on LAN function in the BIOS. The configuration of your Windows Settings and BIOS allow your computer to power up from the standby or hibernate state, when triggered by a special LAN signal. Note: For further details, please refer to the manual of your computer. 3.1.1 How to configure your BIOS (Basic Input Output System): The firmware of your PC (BIOS), being located on the mainboard, is responsible for starting the operating system - it simply brings your PC to life. To open your BIOS start page, press e.g. the F2 or Delete key (depending on your PC this may vary - please check your manual) while starting your operating system. Since every BIOS looks different (depending on your PC) the following description can only be an approximation of what you will find on your start page. Go to section: Power Management Setup / Advanced / Onboard Devices Configuration (or similar) Click on: Remote Wake up / Wake on LAN / LAN Boot ROM (or similar) Enable the Wake on LAN function and save your settings. Exit your BIOS by pressing e.g. the F10 key (depending on your PC this may vary - please check your manual). 3.1.2 How to configure your Windows Settings: Go to your Device Manager (to be found via: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\System). The Device Manager opens: 9

PCTV Systems Click on Network adapters and choose your Network Interface Card. The following dialog (or similar) opens: 10

Requirements for DistanTV mobile Go to: Power Management (Settings or similar). The following dialog (or similar) opens: Enable Wake on LAN and save your settings with the OK button. 11

PCTV Systems 3.2 How to contact your router via iphone / ipod touch and wake up your computer Since some routers cannot be enabled for Wake on LAN, please check your router s manual before continuing. Depending on your router, the web interface may vary from case to case, therefore the following description on how to wake up your PC and configure your router can only be an approximation of what you will find: Contact your router via internet from your iphone / ipod touch. Select the menu item Network in your router s web interface. Select the computer you want to wake up and click on the Edit button. Click the Start Computer button. Your computer gets started remotely out of the standby mode. Please allow approximately 10 seconds before accessing data within your home network. 12

Glossary D Data rate: The data rate is also known as the bit rate. The bit rate measures how fast bits of data can be transferred over a medium in a given period of time. This rate is listed in bits per second (bps). E Ethernet: The most common type of local-area network. Each node (computer or server) in the network checks whether any other computer is transmitting data. It then waits for the other computers to finish with their transmissions before it starts its own transmission. (see also "LAN") I IP Address: Abbreviation for "Internet Protocol". Every computer connected to the Internet receives a unique identification number that consists of four sections. This number is called an IP address. This allows other computers in the network to identify it, send data packets to it and to process data they have received from it. IP addresses make sure that the right data packets are sent to the right recipient via the right path. L LAN: Abbreviation for "Local Area Network". A local network located in a building or on company premises that is based on private transmission media and equipment. Ethernet and Token Ring are common LAN technologies. N Network protocol: A network protocol, also known as a communications protocol or protocol for short, is an exact agreement used for exchanging data between computers and/or processes that are connected to each other on a network. A protocol consists of rules and formats that define how communication functions on the computers on the network. 14

Glossary P Port: The end point of a logical connection within a network. The port number indicates the type or the type of use of the port. Certain port numbers are reserved for specific applications. For example, port 80 is used for http communication. R Router: Routers, also known as "Intermediate Systems (IS)", are linking elements that interconnect two or more subnetworks. In addition to acting as a bridge, routers can expand the boundaries of a network (number of nodes, physical extension). Routers also control data traffic by not forwarding defective data packets. S Server: A computer or a program that offers storage, data-transfer and other services in a network or on the Internet. Servers often provide services for requestors (clients) located on other computers. Streaming: The act of transferring compressed video and audio files over the Internet. Streaming does not download all the data at once, but downloads it in stages using a store-and-forward method. The data does not arrive as a continuous file, but is cached in the buffer, which can create delays at the start of transmission. The data can be transmitted live or it can be downloaded later. The computer receiving the data stream must have a program (player) installed on it that decompresses the data. Players are usually installed in browsers such as Internet Explorer. The speed and quality of the data depend heavily on how much bandwidth is available. In order to ensure smooth playback, the Internet connection should offer at least 300 Kbps in bandwidth. There are various file formats for audio and video streaming. The most popular formats are MP3, RealAudio and WMA. U UPnP: Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is used to control devices (stereo systems, routers, printers, household controls) via an IP-based network. It is based on a series of standardized network protocols and data formats. W WLAN: Abbreviation for "Wireless Local Area Network". (see also "LAN") 15
