Life with Dentures Helping You Adjust to Your New Smile

Your New Dentures Adjusting to dentures is challenging. You will have to re-learn basic things such as eating and speaking clearly. You may struggle initially, but it will get easier as you adjust to your dentures. Visit for helpful tips and information. 2 3

What to Expect Remember, your dentures may feel obvious and awkward to you, but others won t notice anything but your great smile. Uncomfortable Fit At first, your dentures may feel like they don t fit well and may: Feel large in your mouth, as though they are pushing your lips forward Cause slight gagging Create excess saliva A Change in Perspective It is completely natural to feel self-conscious and embarrassed as you transition to your new dentures. However, the more you wear them, the more natural they will feel. These symptoms are completely normal. In fact, it may take up to 30 days for your mouth to fully heal (refer to the timeline on the next page). Try to be patient during this time. You have to heal before you can feel back to normal. 4 5

The First 30 Days Day 1 Days 2 to 14 Days 15 to 29 Day 30 Day 1 This is the hardest day. Your adjustment to dentures has begun. Start out by eating soft foods that are gentle on your gums and teeth. Days 2 to 14 You may experience excess saliva, sore spots, and increased discomfort and healing time if you had teeth extracted or are a full-plate wearer. Days 15 to 29 Sore spots are healing and saliva buildup has lessened, but you may still have trouble speaking clearly and eating. Consider using Fixodent Food Seal Adhesive for a better fit.* Follow the usage instructions carefully. Day 30 Reward yourself with your favorite food and schedule regular visits with your dentist. Visit dentureliving.com for more helpful advice. *vs. no adhesive 6 7

Benefits of Dentures As you begin to feel more comfortable with your dentures, you will also notice the positive impact they will have on your life. Dentures may help: Improve your appearance Speak more clearly Build your confidence Eat the foods you love 8 9

Tips for Adjusting to Your Dentures Speaking: Bite down and swallow before speaking Speak slower if you experience a lisp or clicking sound Read aloud in front of a mirror to build your confidence and increase comfort Eating: Start slow with soft foods Cut your food into smaller pieces Chew with both sides of your mouth Build your way up to hard, hot foods and drinks once you re used to your dentures Fit: Upper denture should fit well since it is suctioned against the roof of your mouth Lower denture may not remain in place as well since there is less suction Visit your dentist regularly to ensure the best fit Try an adhesive to help improve the fit and stability of your dentures Other Tips: Do not get discouraged. It takes time to adjust to dentures Visit your dentist regularly to care for your remaining teeth, examine any sores that have formed, and check the health of your gums Visit and information. for additional tips 10 11

What is a Denture Adhesive? Denture adhesives create a thin, glue-like film between your dentures and gums to help seal out food and secure your dentures in place. The best time to start using an adhesive to improve the fit and feel of your dentures is after your first 15 days. For best results, start with a small amount and follow the instructions on the box. Benefits of a Denture Adhesive 1. Helps prevent slipping when you eat and speak. 2. Keeps food from getting between your dentures and your gums. 3. Helps improve your confidence. 14 15

Applying a Denture Adhesive UPPER LOWER IMPORTANT: DO NOT use more product than shown in diagram. If product oozes off denture into your mouth, you are using too much. DO NOT use product more than once a day. Each tube should last 1 to 2 weeks. Write date opened here: / / 1. Clean & Dry Dentures 2. Apply Adhesive in thin lines as shown 3. Insert Dentures and hold briefly in place WARNING: DO NOT use more than directed. Contains zinc. Excessive and prolonged zinc intake is reported to be associated with serious health problems. Consult a doctor if using other products containing zinc. DO NOT use excess product for poorly fitting dentures. Consult your dentist regularly to ensure you have properly fitting dentures. Poorly fitting dentures may impair your health. For more support and information about dentures, proper use of adhesives, zinc and other product ingredients, or any other questions or comments, go to www.dentureliving.com or call 1-800-214-8871. 16 17
