MEMORANDUM OF AGREEMENT JOINTLY AWARDED DOCTORAL DEGREE Between The <name of University>, <address of University>, represented by its President/Vice-Chancellor/Principal, <name of President/Vice-Chancellor/Principal>, and The <name of University>, <address of University>, represented by its President/Vice Chancellor/Principal, <name of President/Vice-Chancellor/Principal>, concerning <name of student (Date of Birth)> This Memorandum of Agreement is based on the principles articulated in the Memorandum of Understanding (Jointly Awarded Doctorate) signed by both Universities in <> on <> and motivated by a common desire to expand research and scholarly co-operation between LERU members through joint supervision of doctoral candidates. PREAMBLE: A jointly awarded doctorate is a qualification conferred upon a student on completion of a collaborative programme established by the partner institutions. It is characterised by: Meeting the academic requirements of both universities Agreement regarding a lead university Joint supervision A single degree awarded for one thesis Parchment(s) issued which indicate that there has been joint supervision. Conforming to the regulations in force in both countries, the <name of University> and the <name of University> thereafter designated as "the institutions", agree to put into place a doctoral co-supervision programme for:

<name of student>, The agreement covers the terms of the training that <name of student> will receive for the preparation of a thesis/dissertation in the area of <Field of Study/Thesis Title>. <Academic Unit>, co-supervised by <names of supervisors> for the <name of University> and <names of supervisors> for the <name of University>. ARTICLES: Article 1 The Universities agree jointly to award a single doctoral degree to a student who participates in a collaborative programme involving the two LERU institutions. Article 2: Lead and Partner University The lead institution will be the <name of lead University> which will be responsible for the overall administration of the student s work and the examination process. Regarding the different nomenclatures for doctoral degrees in different places, the lead University shall determine the nomenclature adopted for the jointly awarded degree. The partner university will be the <name of partner University>. Article 3: Registration & Fees The student will be registered in the two universities according to the terms and regulations specific to each of them. Personal details of the student will be held by both institutions to facilitate matriculation, registration etc. For day-to-day functions the local rules of the institution in which the student is resident will apply. The financial arrangements for fees, student support and examination fees will be as follows: <> Article 4: Social Security and Insurance The regulations concerning insurance differ considerably from country to country. The student shall normally be covered by adequate insurance by the lead institution for exigencies such as: illness, accident repatriation and civil liability that may incur

during his/her stay at the partner university and travel between the lead and partner university. In the event that the above-mentioned regular coverage is not available or is deemed insufficient by the student, it is the student s responsibility to subscribe to an appropriate additional personal insurance policy. It is the responsibility of the partner university to advise the incoming candidate of: 1. the requirements for, and provision of, social security and health insurance; 2. their personal liabilities and obligations in these matters Article 5: Length of the Agreement This agreement will start from the initial registration of the student in the joint programme and will finish with the final outcome of the examination of the doctoral thesis/dissertation, unless terminated earlier in accordance with Article 5 (Pedagogic Terms) below. The length of time spent in each University has been defined jointly by the two supervisors, according to the following calendar: Academic Years <Months> of 2012/2013: to be carried out in <name of appropriate University> <Months> of 2013/2014: to be carried out in <name of appropriate University> <Months> of 2014/2015: to be carried out in <name of appropriate University> (etc. for institutions that require longer than three years) Article 6: Intellectual Property Arrangements to safeguard and divide any intellectual property generated as a result of this agreement must be determined in writing at the outset and will be as follows: <> Article 7: Academic supervision The academic supervision and training will be provided and overseen by the research group including <names of supervisors> in <name of academic unit>,< name of university> and by the research group including <names of supervisors> in <name of academic unit>,< name of university>. Supervisory arrangements will be as follows: <> If one of the supervisors resigns/moves, the resigning supervisor in consultation with the doctoral candidate has to find a replacement within 6 months time. If no other

supervisor can be found, both partner institutions must declare the agreement as terminated after this time period. The resigning supervisor should notify the end date of his/her function to all signing parties in written form. Article 8: The final examination The<name of lead University> will be responsible for the administration of the final examination of the thesis/dissertation. The examination will comprise of a combination of processes satisfying regulation of both institutions. The following must be determined in writing at the outset: Format of examination (whether oral examination required, number and role of examiners) Format of thesis (including language) Article 9: Graduation The <name of University> and the <name of University> agree to award a joint doctorate with the title of <> if the appropriate standards are met in the thesis presented and in the examination. The student will normally graduate at the lead university but may elect to graduate at one ceremony at either of the Universities. The student will normally be awarded a single certificate, which makes it clear that the degree is jointly awarded. Where appropriate it may carry the crest and representative signatures of both Universities. In those cases where two certificates are issued for one degree, remarks should be included on the certificates to acknowledge the joint nature of the degree and partner universities involved. Issuance of replacement parchments shall require the consent of both Universities. Article 10 : Official registration and filing Students would normally be required to enrol in the joint degree programme at both Universities at the time of first registration. The official registration of the above mentioned thesis/dissertation will be done under the laws of each country and the regulations of each University. Article 11: Duration of the agreement The present agreement becomes operative from the date of signature of the representative of each of the two institutions and will be valid to the completion of the academic programme and examination. In case the student should renounce writing

the joint thesis, or should the thesis/dissertation supervisors jointly decide not to allow the student to continue writing the thesis because of inadequate academic progress (about which the student should have been be given suitable warning), the two institutions would immediately bring the present agreement to an end, by a joint decision.
