These models can be used to study problems in for example communication networks, smart grid and health care logistics. The complex interactions encountered in these systems make their study both highly relevant and mathematically challenging. The analytic tools that I use to tackle these models are diverse, and stem from analysis, applied probability and queueing theory. Some of the main results of my research are: 1. We show that the MaxWeight scheduling algorithm, which is widely believed to be throughput optimal, may be unstable when subjected to flow-level dynamics (Infocom 2009, WiOpt 2011, Computer Communications 2013). 2. We study the carrier-sensing range of the CSMA protocol, and establish a previously unknown connection between the throughput-optimal value of the sensing range, and the back-off times of the nodes. For linear networks we compute the optimal sensing range (ACM SIGMETRICS 2010, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking 2014). 3. We solve the problem of unfairness in random-access networks, and equalize the nodes throughputs by choosing node-specific back-off times. These back-off times are also studied in a multi-hop setting, where they constitute a highly effective congestion control mechanism (ValueTools 2009, Performance Evaluation 2012). 4. Energy storage can be used to exploit price fluctuations and incorporate renewables into the electricity grid, and will be an essential component of future smart grids. We are the first to determine the optimal control policy for such storage, and we demonstrate that storage may lead to significant cost savings (Energy 2011, IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid 2013).
