How IBM Bluemix and Watson Helps Zurich to Improve Communities' Flood Resilience MBM-5829 Thorsten Gau (@tgau) IBM Distinguished Engineer v04

Zurich Insurance is... helping customers understand and protect themselves from risk. Since 1872 we have been applying our expertise and experience so that our customers can have the very best protection for the things they value. offering life & general insurance products and services for those who truly love global insurer 1

Agenda Zurich & IBM care for communities Flood resilience is one of Zurich Foundation s key focus areas By understanding and measuring how community assets can provide resilience, we can take action to enhance it Speedy implementation of mobile app to move from theory to understand what happens on the ground Our agile team is empowered and shielded We use open standards and keep the architecture simple Manage the project on IBM Cloud: Bluemix Track&Plan Run the project on Bluemix: WebSphere Liberty and DB2. Option to use Watson for Advanced Analytics 2

Zurich & IBM care for communities The Zurich Flood Resilience Program aims to enhance community resilience to flooding through an innovative multi-sector alliance. This comprises the private sector, academia and the humanitarian/development sector. The IBM Corporate Service Corps was launched in 2008 to help communities around the world solve critical problems. By sending groups of 10-15 individuals from different countries for community-based assignments in emerging markets, the program has helped over 140,000 people since its inception. A community may be defined in many ways: in a rural context it may be limited by geographical boundaries; in an urban area by administrative ones. 3

Flood resilience is one of Zurich s key focus areas Floods affect more people than any other types of natural disaster Thought Leadership As insurers we know the impact they have on people s lives and how much damage they can cause The flood resilience program is an alliance of 5 organizations Catalyzer The program comprises a five-year commitment, and includes an initial investment of USD 35.6 million by the Z Zurich Foundation Global Reach Innovation Together we focus on pre-event flood mitigation, as opposed to post-event flood relief 4

4Rs (Resilience properties) in the 5Cs (Capitals) Robustness = the ability to withstand a shock Redundancy = functional diversity Social Capital Financial capital Human Capital Physical Capital Resourcefulness = ability to mobilize when threatened Natural Capital Rapidity = ability to contain losses and recover in a timely manner Sustainable Rural Livelihoods framework 5

Grading risk factors aligned to the 4Rs & 5Cs Risk factor: Livelihood stability A (Strength) Households have ability to maintain income stream via one or more livelihood strategies. D (Growth area) Households have no livelihood continuity strategy in the case of flood. Redundancy = functional diversity Baseline question Financial Capital If your main economic activity is affected by floods, what other form of income do you have? Grading A B C D Percent of community with alternative income strategy >75% >50% >25% 25% 6

Why IBM? The drive to approach IBM comes from moving from developing a theoretical framework to testing whether it works in real communities. To be able to gather data consistently enables us to draw lessons from it which validates our approach. We therefore needed an IT solution that we could use with all our NGO partners across communities ranging from the US to Timor-Leste to bring this data to our researchers. 7

How we delivered Flood Resilience Measurement (FRM) approx. 2 weeks approx. 2 weeks 3 sprints of 2 weeks... Mobilize Understand Explore & Strategize Build Test & Implement Manage & Evolve Zurich asked IBM team for help to establish a tool supporting their FRM initiative. One CAMS solution architect assigned. Several client conversations to understand desired outcome, scope and what a MVP would look like. Main drivers are time & budget constraints. High level architecture for proposed Cloud / Mobile / Analytics solution created. Effort estimation & staff skill profile based on component design. Agile implementation of solution with Client Innovation Center. Work triage and prioritization on per sprint basis to deliver maximum value. Tight feedback loop enables client to better understand his real needs. Load questions. Configure training scenario. Education NGO members. Go-live. Monitor. Improve. CAMS = Cloud Analytics Mobile Social MVP = Minimum Viable Product 17

Our lessons learned IBM Bluemix Garage Method Mobilize Understand Explore & Strategize Build Test & Implement Manage & Evolve IBM Design Thinking Agile (Scrum) / DevOps Demonstrate value & competence early Sharing risk within the contract Transition writings from documenting to facilitating Old Habits Die Hard Proficiency in collaboration tools is mandatory Getting to build just the MVP is very hard https://www.ibm.com/devops/method/category/practices 18

Summary quote from the Product Owner The relationship that Zurich and IBM have developed enabled us to build a Flood Resilience Measurement solution rapidly and effectively. Pay as you go development allows us to finish when we need and extend as we need. Designed with technology constraints in mind to match the needs of NGOs in the developing world - recognising the difference between developing a solution for a global business and a small NGO Combining the resources of the corporate sector to help improve the resilience of society 19
