Who We Are In 1883, Charles H. Carey stepped from a San Francisco packet steamer onto the Portland docks with a single $20 gold piece in his pocket. Launching his legal practice at age 26, he was just two years older than the state of Oregon. When James B. Kerr joined Carey in 1907, the partnership that would become Stoel Rives was formed. Following the expanding railroads and the spectacularly successful forest products industries, Stoel Rives experienced steady growth. Today with more than 350 lawyers, we practice across the full spectrum of business law and litigation with offices from the West Coast to the Midwest. We provide legal services to clients with local, regional, national and international operations. Our industry expertise has broadened significantly over the years. This is evidenced by our prominent reputation in the energy and renewables arena. Our capabilities may have changed, but not our values or our commitment to serving our clients in the best possible way. Although our clients are diverse, they do share some common traits. They are industry leaders, and they expect focused understanding and excellent service from their legal counsel.
Practice Areas Stoel Rives provides sophisticated business services and litigation advice. Our lawyers represent clients ranging from start-ups to nationally known public companies across the United States and internationally. We spend our energies getting to know our clients businesses and operations, on listening and on finding solutions rather than just pointing out problems and getting in the way. To put it simply, we work to help businesses meet goals. It s an attitude toward providing legal services that our new clients appreciate and that our current clients have come to expect. That s also why we have formed industry-focused groups. Client Service At Stoel Rives, meeting your legal needs only forms the baseline of our service approach. We begin by listening to you, hearing your own story and the issues that affect your business. From our very first meeting, Stoel Rives lawyers will customize their approach to handling all of your matters. Some of our clients develop a close, advisory relationship with a single, highly trained attorney. But all appreciate the flexibility and expandability offered by the depth and breadth of our experienced lawyers and seasoned industry teams. We are not so large as to lose the personal touch; nor are we too small to mobilize an impressive, hardhitting team. We can be as focused or as broad as your business issue. We understand the need for responsiveness as our world becomes smaller and real-time communication narrows the window for effective action. Our lawyers are there with you, working side-by-side, to meet your business challenges when and as they arise. We are in a service business. Our clients are our priority. We prove that to you by staying up-to-the-minute with changes in your industry, remaining accessible by answering your calls and emails, and by delivering on our promises.
Firm Culture Stoel Rives LLP offers law students and recent graduates unique professional and personal opportunities. With more than 350 lawyers and a broad and diverse client base, Stoel Rives practice encompasses virtually every area of legal expertise. We have over 35 practice areas and 25 industry teams, and we offer professional opportunities available only at the top firms. The technological capability and diversity of experience in a firm of our size add up to better results for our clients and more satisfying careers for our lawyers. The scope of our practice means that when a particularly difficult legal question arises, you will usually be able to find a colleague who has handled a similar situation and can provide guidance. Diversity is one of Stoel Rives core values and a key part of the firm s strategic vision. Diversity among our attorneys and staff is critical to the quality of our legal work and client service. Diversity is essential to a vibrant and vital work environment, providing the broad perspectives needed to address the challenges of today and tomorrow. Clients recognize the importance of a commitment to diversity in their own companies and increasingly expect their outside counsel to demonstrate a similar commitment.
Community At Stoel Rives, we believe our value rests not only in the clients we serve, but in our vital role in shaping the communities where we live. We also share a commitment to ensuring that all people, regardless of means, should have access to our legal system. We support organizations that provide legal assistance to less advantaged persons and our attorneys provide pro bono legal services. We also play a role as a firm and through our lawyers in helping to enhance the livability of our communities for all. We believe that charitable and civic projects are carried out most effectively and passionately when they coincide with an individual s interests. Therefore, Stoel Rives employees are encouraged to engage in pro bono and community activities of their own choice. Our involvement in the community is as varied and diverse as the people who work here. And we like it that way.
