Savannah Smith led the team with 15 points in the loss. Against the Big Sky UNC is 98-121 all-time against Big Sky opponents. Since joining the conference in the 26-7 season, the Bears are 88-85 all-time. Last season the Bears went 12-6 in the conference to finish third. On This Date The Bears are 6-2 when playing on February 4th. UNC has played six of those eight games at home on the date, compiling a 5-1 record in those games. The last time Northern Colorado took the floor on the fourth day of February was in 212 when they hosted and defeated Weber State 7-57. Month of February Northern Colorado had a historic February last season, tying a program record with seven wins in the month and going 7-1 overall. As a program the Bears are 146-163 during the second month of the year. Savvy Taking off Redshirt freshman Savannah Smith has become a key player off the bench for UNC recently. She had a career high 2 points against Southern Utah and has scored in double figures every since. Over that three game stretch she is averaging 17.7 points on 39.1 percent shooting, including hitting on nine 3-pointers. Finding her Spot Freshman forward Courtney Smith has grown into her role for the Bears this year. Over the past six games she has played some valuable minutes for the team. In those games she is averaging 18.2 minutes and 7.2 points giving UNC improved depth in the front court. UNC s Swiss Army Knife Savannah Scott has turned into UNC s Swiss army knife this year, doing it all for the Bears. She leads the team in points (9.9), rebounds (4.7) and steals (2.) while also being second in assists (2.7). Road Woes UNC has struggled on the road this season going 1-8 in true road games. The Bears are averaging 54.2 points a game way from Bank of Colorado Arena and allowing opponents to score 61.3. In the team s first nine road games, opponents have outshot UNC.434-to-.37. Career-High Weekend A pair of Bears set career-highs against Southern Utah on January 21. Savannah Smith scored 2 points on solid shooting and also grabbed a career-high six rebounds in the game. Savannah Scott joined in on the career-high weekend, setting a few herself. On Thursday, Scott set a career-high in steals grabbing six against SUU. Meanwhile on Saturday, she set a new high for assists with 1, in the team s win over NAU. Comeback Week Northern Colorado had a pair of comeback victories to open home conference play. Against Idaho State UNC had its second biggest comeback as a program after overcoming a 14 point deficit. Kourteney Zadina hit the game-winning shot with 1.9 seconds left to secure the win. Against Weber State on that Saturday UNC once again overcame a double figure deficit. This one of the 12 point variety when Savannah Scott hit the game winner as time expired. Finding Their Roles Northern Colorado seems to be settling into its roles on the team as conference play has started. While Kourteney Zadina and Kyleigh Hiser are looked at as sharp shooters, Savannah Scott and Kianna Williams have stepped up as stat sheet stuffers. Another couple roles that have been well defined for the team are the solid inside presence of Rebecca Howell and Courtney Smith on both ends of the court. D-D-D-Defense The Bears have really stepped it up defensively as Big Sky play has started. In the team s first eight Big Sky games, Northern Colorado is holding teams to just 56.9 points a game, ranking first in the conference. UNC put the clamps down on defense last Thursday night in the second half. For the half the Bears made a stop on 24 of Idaho State s 31 possessions. They also held ISU to just two points in the third quarter and 1-of-12 shooting. The Bengals were held scoreless for an 11:6 period allowing UNC to come back and take a seven point lead. Against Montana State, defense once again proved to be important in UNC s comeback attempt. In the third quarter of the game, the Bears held the Bobcats to just 2-13 shooting and six points overall. The Bears defense had its best performance to date against Southern Utah (1/21). Not only did they hold the T-Birds to 44 points, but they forced 21 turnovers, 1 via steals and held them to 28.6 percent shooting. Kiwi Stuffing the Stat Sheet Kianna Williams has taken off in her sophomore season doing it all for the Bears. She ranks fifth on the team in scoring (7. ppg), tied for third in assists (2.3 apg), second in rebounds (4.2 rpg) and second in steals (1.6 spg). 7 is the Mark Coach Ethridge always preaches to her team that if they score 7 points they are in a good position to win. Both Idaho (3rd) and Sacramento State (1st) are ahead of UNC. Valuing the Ball Once again this year UNC is valuing the rock, and forcing teams into turnovers. They rank 2th in the country and second in the Big Sky with a 1.2 assist-turnover ratio. RPI Report UNC is ranked 182 as of 2/2, sixth best in the Big Sky. Idaho is the highest at 122. What s on deck? UNC closes out its three-game road trip when they take on Idaho State at 2: p.m. Saturday. Around the Den Men s basketball looks to pick up its fifth straight when they host Weber State on Thursday night inside Bank of Colorado Arena. Wrestling closes out its own three-match road trip just up the road at the University of Wyoming on Saturday night. While the swimmers have the weekend off, UNC s divers will compete in the Air Force Dive Invite on Friday and Saturday. Before kick-off on Super Bowl Sunday, men s tennis will start its Big Sky play in North Dakota when they take on the Fighting Hawks. New Bear Cubs On November 11th head coach Kamie Ethridge and her staff announced the signing of three players for the 216-17 season. UNC will welcome Bridget Hintz, Abby Kain and Mandy Karako next season. Both Hintz and Kain are forwards listed at 6 3 from Michigan and 6 1 from Minnesota, respectively. While Karako is a 5 11 guard from Texas. #RoadtoReno New this year the Big Sky Conference will be headed to Reno, Nevada for both the men s and women s tournament. The #RoadToReno will begin on New Year s Eve and take place over March 7-13 for the women s tournament. Social Bears Wanting to stay up to date on all things UNC women s basketball? Make sure to use the #Bearsketball as well, the official hashtag for the team. UNC Bears Focus New this year for all Northern Colorado athletics fans is the UNC Focus presented by Advantage Bank. The UNC Focus is a weekly radio show. The Voice of the Bears Troy Coverdale will host it each Wednesday night on 131 KFKA from 5pm-6pm. Schedule Tidbits UNC s 215-16 schedule has a local flavor to with the team playing four different Centennial State teams. It starts with the season opener at Denver followed by Western State (Nov. 16) and then Colorado (Nov. 19). The final game comes against Colorado State (Dec. 8). The Bears face eight different teams that competed in the post season last year. NCAA: South Dakota State, South Florida and Montana, WNIT: Saint Mary s, Colorado State, Eastern Washington and Sacramento State and WBI: North Dakota. Mixed Bag of Expectations This year s Big Sky preseason polls had a mixed bag of predictions for most teams. Montana, North Dakota and Sacramento State made the top of each the media and coaches poll, but after that there was a mixture of expectations. Northern Colorado was picked fourth by the coaches and seventh by the media. Welcome to the Staff Head coach Kamie Ethridge had a shake up to her staff over the summer. Former associate head coach Shalee Lehning stepped away from coaching and Deb Patterson moved into the director of basketball operations role for the team leaving two spots open on Ethridge s coaching staff. She filled those spots with Laurie Koehn and Austin Thoms. Koehn just retired from playing professionally overseas, while Thoms comes to UNC from Nebraska where he was an administrative assistant/video coordinator. New Year, New Format Over the summer the NCAA changed the format of women s basketball. The game is now divided up into four 1 minute quarters, instead of the previous two 2 minute halves. Also coaches now only have four total timeouts to use for the game instead of the previous five. The reasoning for the changes is to speed up the game and to keep the fans engaged into the action.
