Box 30018 - Lansing, MI 48909 (517) 241-9201 www.cis.state.mi.us/bcs/appr/ PRELICENSURE & CONTINUING EDUCATION COURSE SPONSORS PRELICENSURE COURSES Limited Appraisers must complete 75 hours of basic appraisal courses, including 15 hours of Uniform Standards of Professional Practice (USPAP). State Licensed Appraisers must have 90 course hours of residential or basic appraisal education; Certified Residential Appraisers must complete 120 hours of appraisal education, and Certified General Appraisers must have 180 hours of education, including at least 90 hours of non-residential education. Each level may apply the coursework from the previous license. CONTINUING EDUCATION Fourteen hours of continuing education per year are required after the first renewal for STATE LICENSED APPRAISERS and CERTIFIED APPRAISERS, and after the second renewal for LIMITED REAL ESTATE APPRAISERS. Licenses are on a biennial (2 year) renewal cycle. This means that 28 hours of continuing education will be required during the 2-year license period prior to renewal. To ensure that your renewal is processed timely, continuing education should be completed and reported to the department no later than May 30 of each renewal year, even though the deadline for continuing education is July 31 of each renewal year. The 28 hours may be accomplished at any time during the 2-year renewal period, which begins August 1 of each renewal year. Licensees should refer to Section 2627 of the Michigan Occupational Code for specific continuing education requirements. Licensees will not be notified that they need continuing education. Excess hours will not be confirmed, nor will they carry over to the next year. It is the licensee's responsibility to maintain their own record of continuing education. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT EDUCATION All education sponsors and courses should be pre-approved. If you are considering taking a course, check with the department or course sponsor to ensure that the course will be accepted for credit by the department. The Department also maintains a continuously updated list of both continuing education and prelicensure courses on the appraiser web site: www.cis.state.mi.us/bcs/appr/. SPONSOR LIST This is not an all-inclusive list, and is subject to change, but contains the most current list of sponsors who we believe to be offering courses acceptable to the Department. Not all the sponsors appearing on this list may be currently offering continuing education or prelicensure course programs, but they have had courses recently approved. It is recommended that you contact the board office for up-to-date information about sponsors and course approval, if the sponsor cannot provide that information.
