Introduction The client s revenue has been growing steadily for many years while grabbing more market share in the telecom business worldwide. As they have grown they not only expanded their customer base, but also geographically extended their reach to many continents and countries. As a result of this expansion their data and business processes have gained in complexity and size. The client has historically focused in the telecom Operator market segment with continuous success; however, it has decided to expand business opportunities in new market segments by utilizing channels sales as well as consumer products. For the client, this move to new business models was fundamentally different in not only business processes, but also technology and data. The need for new strategies in data management to support these changes and future business models had become an urgent necessity.
Problem Statement The client expansion to new business models meant that it now had an expanding array of new product lines, customers, vendors, and employees. These increases in master data volume and variety would mean that existing technological infrastructure and data models would not suffice to handle the complexity of the new business model. There were many new questions, such as should we manage our master data universally across all these business units or separate them by each unit. What business processes and functions will be shared across these business units and which ones will be different? The business stakeholders in each business unit lived in a silo with their own objectives and goals. The company not only suffered from process, data, and system silos in each functional domain, but also now it suffered from further isolation in each business units. This meant more operational costs for the corporate stakeholders to consolidate the enterprise data for operations, reporting, and business intelligence. These new problems demanded a strategic approach that aligned all business functions and business units under one united enterprise that moved forward as a single entity rather than many floating boats in different directions. Zendeux s Solution Dealing with such a significant transformational change in business model meant that data management strategy should now include not only master data management, but also data governance, data quality, data architecture, and data integration roadmap as well. Like any holistic data management strategy, Zendeux and the client needed to consider the organizational needs and impact and how data would need to be managed in a federated fashion to engage all stakeholders in a common data strategy across all business functions, business units, and even regions. Ignoring any of these stakeholder groups would have left parts of the enterprise silo and alienated from the rest. Zendeux analyzed all the client s core business processes across functions, business units, and regions and looked for areas of commonality and variations. Then examined the master data such as Customers, Vendors, Products, and others to see how these process variations impacted the business data definition in each group. By profiling the actual master data in each group, Zendeux also discovered master data overlap between these business functions, units, and regions. This proved to the functional business and corporate stakeholders that their data was not deemed independent and there was a need for shared master data management between their domains.
Working with client s business and IT leadership, Zendeux proposed a clear definition of each master data and using Zendeux Data Management Framework (ZDMF), provided the existing data management organization with the tools and techniques to create single common data model for master data in the enterprise. Data governance roles and responsibilities in the new multi business unit organization in context of master data management had to be defined so that each group of master data stakeholders has their roles and responsibilities defined clearly. Zendeux used its proprietary Data Governance RACI tool to help define the new data governance model for the client s rapidly growing and diverse organization. This model had to be defined not only for today s need but also in consideration of the potential of future expansion and company growth. Implementation Zendeux worked closely with the data management organization for propose a new federated data governance model to support the new multi-business unit strategy for the enterprise. The new master data strategy also meant that new integration architecture had to be designed to accommodate the shared common master data model. Zendeux worked closely with IT architecture, SOA, and Information Architecture teams to define a new master data services platform to create a seamless integration with the new master data hubs with minimum impact to the existing functional business solutions. Outcome Summary After a significant collaboration between Zendeux and the client business and IT professionals and leadership, the new data management strategy provided the client with a clear roadmap and tools and techniques to tackle its new opportunities and challenges. Though Zendeux has remained a close IT strategic partner with client s data management organization, the in-house professional and leadership are now equipped to implement the future phases of the roadmap as part of a self-sustainable data governance organization.
