Top Five Myths About Lawyers You have been charged with a New Jersey Traffic Ticket or DUI and you are wondering what to do next. Hire an experienced New Jersey Traffic Attorney. Do not wait. Now is the time to find a lawyer who can guide you through this process - the investigation, the motions to suppress evidence, the gathering and analysis of the evidence, and more - needs to get started right away. It is difficult to pick a lawyer, not only because there are so many out there, but also because since you are not a lawyer yourself you do not know what a good one looks like. Many consumers just like you fall prey to myths and misconceptions about lawyers and they wind up selecting an attorney who is not qualified to most effectively handle their case and meet their needs. Here are the Top Five Myths. Myth #1: All lawyers have the same experience. Saying every lawyer is the same is like saying every doctor, baseball player, mechanic, or photographer is the same. You know it is not true. People are unique. Even if a lawyer has been in practice for decades, with a fantastic resume and has argued cases before the Supreme Court, it does not tell you anything about his or her ability to effectively handle your matter. There is no substitute for education, training and experience gained through years of defending clients who have been accused of New Jersey traffic tickets. Beware of lawyers who dabble in this area. Find a lawyer who focuses on defending Traffic Tickets and DUI. Remember, you don t want your children s pediatrician, no matter how brilliant he or she may be, doing your brain surgery. Myth #2: If a lawyer advertises that he takes DUI or Traffic Ticket cases it is because he has experience in DUI or Traffic Ticket law. This myth is similar to the first, but it is different in an important way. Let s assume you understand how important it is that your attorney has experience in DUI or Traffic Ticket defense, can you assume that since an attorney is willing to take your DUI case he or she has the necessary experience to do the job? No, you should not. As a consumer, you know that advertising is often misleading. This is no less true when it comes to advertising for lawyers.

Just because a lawyer advertises or indicates that he or she will handle a certain type of case, it does not mean the lawyer has the skill, education, experience, and training necessary to do the job. Myth #3: The State Bar determines whether a lawyer can advertise as a DUI or Traffic Defense lawyer. Although alarming, this is simply not true. Any lawyer can claim to be a DUI or Traffic Ticket defense lawyer. It is up to you as the consumer to do your homework, educate yourself, interview the lawyer, ask tough questions and figure out whether the lawyer is truly dedicated DUI and Traffic Ticket defense or just a lawyer who is willing to take your case. Myth #4: All lawyers will take my case to trial. As strange as this may seem, many lawyers are not committed to taking your case to trial get the best outcome for you. Some lawyers mean well, but lack the skill, knowledge, training, education, and experience to even understand the subtle and complex issues in a DUI or Traffic Tickets case. Some lawyers simply want to take your money and do as little work as possible. Some lawyers won t take a case to trial because they fear irritating the prosecutor and judge they work with every day. An experienced and dedicated DUI and Traffic Ticket defense lawyer will be better able to identify possible issues in your case and put you in the best position to get the best outcome. Myth #5: All lawyers carry Malpractice Insurance. All lawyers are not required to carry Malpractice Insurance. This means if your lawyer does not carry this coverage and makes a mistake, you may have no recourse. Before hiring a DUI or Traffic Ticket defense lawyer, ask whether the lawyer is insured. You may want to speak with a number of attorneys or law firms before deciding which will represent you. This sort of initial consultation is sometimes done free of charge. In some firms, the lawyers do not speak with clients until after they have been hired. In this situation, the initial consultation will be with someone else in the firm, which allows the attorney to spend the maximum amount of time working for his or her current clients. The most important thing to remember when speaking with a potential lawyer, or someone from his or her firm, is not to be afraid to ask questions. The best and most qualified law firms will welcome your questions

and they will take it as a sign that you have done your homework. Remember, when you are interviewing an attorney or a law firm, they are also interviewing you to see if they want to take your case. A good lawyer appreciates a truly prepared client because it is an indication that the client is committed to getting the best legal representation available.
