Enterprise Switches Accelar 8000 10-slot and 6-slot Chassis Data Sheet High Availability Operational Simplicity Low cost of Ownership Year 2000 Compliant The Accelar 8000 enterprise switch is a new platform providing high availability and multi-service integration for enterprise campus and MAN/WAN applications. It leverages Nortel Networks unmatched experience in delivering high-availability systems for carriers, service providers and financial markets. As a result, it is the ideal platform for enterprise network managers wishing to deploy unified networks for the new millennium. The Accelar 8000 features a highly fault-tolerant chassis, enabling it to deliver unprecedented levels of resilience and availability. It also provides investment protection by enabling seamless integration of routing switch technology, multi-service MAN/WAN technology and IP telephony, within a system scaling from 50Gbps to 256Gbps. The Accelar 8000 enterprise switch is available in two form-factors, providing a high-availability platform for all enterprise applications. The 10-slot Accelar 8010 chassis is designed for high-density campus wiring closets and backbones needing the highest levels of availability and scalability. The smaller 6-slot Accelar 8006 chassis is designed for medium-sized wiring closets and backbones in which space is at a premium and lower density is desired.
KEY BENEFITS High Availability The Accelar 8000 chassis features a passive switching architecture that is designed to provide high availability for the wide range of supported technologies. Up to three load-sharing and load-balancing power supplies can be installed, with a fully loaded chassis able to operate with any two power supplies present, providing N+1 power redundancy. All power supplies can be hot-swapped. Both AC and DC power supplies are available, allowing the chassis to be deployed in both enterprise and service provider networks. Fan-trays (dual in the 10-slot chassis) are provided for cooling, and include hot-swap capability. The chassis provides system monitoring and automated reporting of component failure for power supplies, fans, system modules and interface modules. Accelar 8000 supports distributed switching and management, eliminating single points of failure and providing total system resilience. Redundant MultiLink Trunking (MLT) provides scalable riser, server and inter-switch bandwidth, with the trunk ports distributed across separate modules. This eliminates the single point of failure found in many trunking implementations that terminate on a single module in the chassis. LinkSafe backbone and riser connections provide recovery from cabling failures in microseconds, ensuring maximum uptime for critical business applications. Accelar 8000 provides complete security for the campus LAN, restricting network access to authorized users and controlling access to departments, servers and critical applications. Operational Simplicity The Accelar 8000 chassis provides simplified installation and maintenance, with power supplies, fan trays and all system and interface modules being accessible from the front of the chassis. The system supports scalable switching bandwidth from 50Gbps to 256Gbps and a wide range of interface types, initially including Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet and ATM. Interface modules for multi-service MAN and WAN connectivity will also be available in future. MultiLink Trunking (MLT) provides scalable riser, server and inter-switch bandwidth up to 8 Gbps today, scaling to 32 Gbps in the future. Effective control of bandwidth-hungry IP Multicast applications is automatically provided using standard IETF protocols there is no added complexity by unnecessarily adding new protocols to handle Multicast traffic. Policy services and prioritization for critical applications are easily implemented and monitored on the Accelar 8000 using Optivity end to end policy management. Intelligent agents in the Accelar 8000 interface modules provide Class of Service (CoS) support using industry standards to carry priority information across the network. 2 Accelar 8000 10-slot and 6-slot Chassis Data Sheet
Configuration and management of Accelar 8000 switches is supported by Nortel Networks industry and marketleading Optivity network management system, including a common Command Line Interface (CLI) across the Nortel Networks enterprise product families. Every Accelar 8000 switch port also supports 4 groups of RMON, Port Mirroring and Remote Traffic Monitoring (RTM), enabling network managers to diagnose problems without leaving their desks. Low Cost of Ownership The Accelar 8000 chassis provides a single integrated platform to meet all enterprise campus and MAN/WAN requirements. Accelar 8000 provides easy front-access to all system components and interface modules, reducing floor-space requirements in wiring closets and data centers. System components are common to both 6 and 10 slot chassis and many interface modules are shared with other Nortel Networks switches, reducing sparing and maintenance costs. Accelar 8000 provides scalable switching bandwidth from 50Gbps to 256Gbps, together with system and interface modules for edge switching, core routing switching and multi-service MAN/WAN integration. Network managers can deploy Accelar 8000 with the knowledge that Nortel Networks is able to provide unmatched data and telephony technology integration within a single enterprise platform.
