2.0 SURVEY TYPES MDHS100 Surveying, sampling and assessment of asbestos-containing materials (HSE, July 2001) defines survey types and uses. TYPE 1 Location and ssessment Survey The intention of this survey is locate any suspect materials that may contain asbestos within a building and provide an assessment of the risk posed by the presence of the material. The survey does not require sampling of materials and a material is presumed to contain asbestos unless there is clear evidence to the contrary. The client carries the responsibility of additional cost to manage non-asbestos-containing materials. ll areas must be inspected or presumed to contain asbestos unless proven otherwise. TYPE 2 Standard Sampling, dentification and ssessment Survey This is similar to a Type 1 survey except the presence of asbestos in a material is confirmed by representative samples of material that are taken and analysed. Samples of suspect material are laboratory examined to confirm or refute the Surveyors judgment. Where materials are homogenous within the building they can be strongly presumed to contain asbestos. Frequency of sampling is set out in HSE MDHS100 and the number taken should be sufficient for the Surveyor to make an assessment determining the presence of asbestos in a material. TYPE 3 Full ntrusive Survey (Pre-Demolition or Major Refurbishment) This survey method is used to locate and quantify as far as reasonably practicable all asbestos containing materials within a building and provides for destructive inspection of the building fabric. full and comprehensive sampling programme is undertaken. Type 3 Survey is not required to assess condition of a material aside from noting damage which may lead to the presence of asbestos debris. Please note: The term used within this report no asbestos detected relates to no asbestos containing materials being detected at the time of the survey and not that no asbestos containing materials exist within the survey area. The possibility still exists that asbestos containing materials may be present. f asbestos containing materials are later discovered/ revealed the actions detailed in the asbestos management plan should be applied. 2.1 SURVEY METHODOLOGY The method employed is the company s in-house procedure for asbestos inspections (Qual Proc 12) which is based upon the guidance in MDHS 100 (HSE, 2001). The survey method and reporting format is as agreed with the client. HSE/S/137/01 Page 4 of 34

3.0 LMTTONS ND RESTRCTONS reas included in the survey are as stated in Section 1.0 and as described in Section 5.0 of this report. The content of this report relates only to the conditions and site situation on the dates of the site visit(s) and does not consider any subsequent changes to the building or circumstances. Where materials have been sampled they have been identified by the Surveyor as having a strong probability that they may contain asbestos. This report is based on visual findings and all reasonable efforts were made to determine the presence of asbestos containing materials within areas accessible at the time of the survey. reas above 2 metres in height have not been assessed or where specialist access equipment would have been required. sbestos may be concealed within the fabric of the building, within sealed voids or within the supporting structure. This survey does not include concealed spaces or inaccessible voids within the building when their presence is not known at the time of the survey or when there is insufficient knowledge or access to complete such a survey. Where intrusive methods would affect the structural stability or integrity of the building it has when known been noted in this report. naccessible rooms or areas of high personal risk (e.g. lift shafts, switch rooms) or where the presence of live services, or contamination create an unacceptable risk, have not been assessed. Where known these circumstances have been noted in this report. Many different products have been found to contain asbestos therefore no responsibility can accepted for any consequential loss or damage resulting from nonrecognition of a material that is later found to have an asbestos content. t is not possible therefore to regard the survey findings as definitive. The possibility always exists that asbestos containing materials may be found during major refurbishment or demolition works. No responsibility is accepted by the author or organisation issuing this report for misinterpretation by third parties. HSE/S/137/01 Page 5 of 34
