Study USA (SUSA) is a scholarship to study business related subjects at a US College for one academic year. The programme is administered by the Department for Employment and Learning and delivered by the British Council. Study USA aims to equip Northern Irish students with international experience and essential business skills, and to raise the profile of Northern Ireland in the United States. Over 200 participating colleges across USA offer fully funded places worth $25000 covering travel, accommodation, books, meals etc. Odhran Kelly Odhran Kelly (Level 5 Engineering Student) spent 11 months in Montana (Great Falls) on the Study USA programme from Sept 2013 to Aug 2014. Northern Regional College 49 Student profile Wendy Newbold Wendy Newbold has been climbing the career ladder in the retail sector since she left school 20 years ago, when she began her working life on the check-out tills at the age of 16. Since then, she had progressed through a variety of managerial positions at Tesco to the role as Compliance Manager at the Tesco Knocknagoney store when, in January 2010, she took the bold step of returning to education. At the age of 34, she enrolled on Northern Ireland s first ever Foundation degree in Retailing through Northern Regional College. The two year Retail Foundation degree is studied through a mix of online classes and aims to help students with their career progression. It is designed to be flexible for those already working in the retail sector: Much of the course is online but it was great that I was able to email tutors if I had a question at any time and to get a quick reply. I attended the college three times during each semester and that was just the right amount as I was able to juggle this with work and I felt it gave me enough face to face time. The class numbers were also small so that there was plenty of opportunity for one to one time with tutors at these classes if needed. An extra bonus was that the college was really close to my home and on my way to work! While I was completing my Foundation degree course I was accepted onto Tesco s Options Programme for Lead Team Development. This led to me being promoted to a lead team position of Personnel Manager in Tesco Ballymoney. The Foundation degree definitely helped me to progress to this lead team role. I would definitely recommend the Foundation degree to anyone in the retail sector who wants to become better at their job and further their career. The course is well structured, supports what you are doing in your day job, allows you to network and is definitely achievable if you have the commitment and are willing to work hard.

52 Northern Regional College Student profiles Kelvin Armstrong I work for a local company called Network Personnel which specialises in training and employment. I decided to do a business course to boost my CV but wasn t sure of my commitment at the time so chose to do the HNC. Having achieved the HNC and enjoyed a good learning experience through the NRC in Magherafelt, I decided to progress onto the degree course part time and subsequently achieved a First Class Honours. Since completing my degree I have received greater recognition in work and have recently been promoted. I feel that completing the business degree though was a major factor in improving my career prospects and would encourage anyone contemplating a degree course to contact the college. Melissa Greer Currently employed as an IT Administrator for The Wrights Group, Ballymena, I have been through 2 redundancies and a period of unemployment during my working career to date. It was following my first redundancy that I decided to enrol on the HNC Business Course, choosing the Magherafelt campus due to the parttime evening classes fitting in around the part-time work I was doing at the time. Completing the HNC with results far better than I expected, progression to the BSc Hons Degree in Business felt like the right move to make. Having found full time employment with Patton Construction during the course of the HNC, and moving to The Wrights Group during the degree course, it was hard working and studying at the same time but the results at the end were worth the hard work. The BSc Hons Degree in Business gave me a real insight into how different functions of business work together, identifying different characteristics and tools used within each function that I was able to recognise within my own workplace. Being able to use what I have learnt in the real world has been of benefit to progression in my current job. My goals for the short term are to continue developing my current role in IT Service Management, with the possibility of expanding the responsibilities of my current role. Longer term I would definitely like to a achieve a role in management and I am considering perhaps returning to Further Education, although to teach rather than study.

Student profile Kasala Gilchrist Kasala is a Peripatetic Support worker at Harberton School and employed by Belfast Education and Library Board. She wanted to develop her job potential and career prospects within the teaching profession and was seeking a new challenge. Kasala explains; I enjoyed most of the lectures on the course and the teaching staff, they were so friendly and helpful. You get so much valuable information and the background to teaching from them. They consistently give you the encouragement to succeed, as it is a challenging course. The course has prepared me better for my every day job by improving my organisation and presentation skills and it has given me confidence. It has taught me to think more quickly on my feet, when I am giving a presentation. I am now better equipped with teaching objectives and lesson plans as a result of this course. I would very definitely recommend this course as it s a very valuable course, there is a lot of work involved but it s worth it. I am considering progression onto a PGCE course. Ricki Doherty Ricki graduated from the University of Hull with a background in Sport and is interested in pursuing a career in teaching. This course gave him the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of teaching and its responsibilities. Ricki explains I enjoyed the lectures and the lecturers who took the course, they really know their subject. I also enjoyed the 30 hours placement at Ballymoney High School which gave me the experience and the opportunity to build up my portfolio and I got to see how teaching really is, in the classroom. I would recommend this course as it has given me what I needed, which was to bridge the gap between my degree and progressing onto a PGCE course at University. It will now assist me with pursuing this goal and it has also given me the confidence to communicate to others about teaching.

Northern Regional College 69 Student profile David Hegarty A Business Graduate from UU Magee Campus. What motivated you to do the course? I had decided that I would like to pursue a career in teaching in Further Education and this course offered me the opportunity to interview and gain entry onto a PGCE course. It also offered experience in teaching that I was seeking. Initially I had intended to begin this course in September 2011 but the decision to undertake another year in University prevented me from enrolling that particular year. In August 2012, once my degree was fully completed and having failed to gain a place on a PGCE course after two interview attempts over a period of twelve months, I decided to enrol again and was successful on achieving a place. What did you enjoy about the course? My favourite aspect of the course was the teaching practice which I carried out at my old school in St Killian s in Carnlough. I found the whole course very enjoyable and the assignments I had to do very beneficial. You learn about how to meet the needs of learners and it provides a great insight into the teaching profession. Keeping reflective journals that aimed to help the trainee critically analyse and evaluate the areas of strength of a lesson and the areas that required improvement reinforced the thirty hours of teaching practice. The tutors on the course are always on hand to provide assistance in lecture sessions, group activities and assignment completion. Would you recommend the course? I certainly would, as it s the most relevant course for those who are interested in gaining entry into a career in teaching with no background in this discipline. The course is very challenging but rewarding and it prepares you for your placement and delivery of a teaching session with students. As a result of this course I can now focus on my progression onto a Business Education PGCE course at Edge Hill University, Lancashire in September.

Students Learn of Benefits of Work Placements In Social Care Sector The Northern Regional College, Newtownabbey Campus, was the venue for a series of seminars for students, on placement and volunteering opportunities, within the local social care sector. Local organisations were on hand to provide advice on the range of opportunities available to students studying for their Higher National Diploma/Certificate in Health & Social Care. NRC Health & Social Care Lecturer, Maura McMackin explains In today s employment market, it can be difficult for students starting out in their careers without experience. The event enables social care employers to meet, interact and recruit placement students. It is mutually beneficial, as it allows the agencies to showcase the good practice they are engaged in, while broadening the scope of the opportunities available. The event provides a platform for the student, to actively approach an agency and to pursue a valuable volunteering opportunity. Students studying for a Health & Social Care qualification at the College generally complete a 200 hour placement, over a period of two years. Valuable placements opportunities can enhance the student s CV and provide them with the benefits of practical experience, to allow them to compete for employment in the future.

Northern Regional College 85 Student Profiles Minford McBride There was a moment during the first class I attended as a student on the Foundation Degree in Counselling that still stands out for me. Our calm, in-control and confident tutor (at the time, my opposite) asked us to read an article about what it s like to share your life with a trainee counsellor. I hooted with derision (internally) at the author s suggestion that training to be a counsellor would decimate my social life (it hasn t much) and that my life would become swamped by a number of internal and external changes that would make me reclaim, redefine and re-evaluate my role in life. On reflection, I m grateful my derisory hoots were silent ones. Those later words, the reflections of the partner of a counsellor-intraining, really do capture what I have experienced these past three years. I love challenge and hanker for newness and change. After 18 yrs living in London, where I worked full-time as a Psychology lecturer, my partner and I decided to give it a go back in Belfast, where I grew up. Once settled there, and with a bit more time on my hands following the completion of my MSc I wondered about taking on a counselling course. I was curious about what it would be like to apply that theory and work with real people who had real needs. This course has proven an ideal place to find out. There s much to recommend the Foundation Degree. It s an integrative course, so I ve had the opportunity to learn about and apply a wide range of theoretical perspectives including Person-Centred, Cognitive Behavioural and Psychodynamic ones. In my experience ongoing personal development underpins every module: I ve certainly developed my self-awareness and awareness of my impact on others from the learning. The tutors are from many points on the counselling spectrum and this diversity helps create a varied, dynamic, often challenging, always rewarding learning experience. There s no shortage of encouraging, constructive and developmental feedback from assignments and class work. My co-trainees have also been a fantastic, supportive bunch: the camaraderie of the group has helped me through a few of the darker moments, inevitable on such an intense and confronting journey. And then there s placement. I ve taken on two placements, one with an organisation focusing on bereavement work, the other in a secondary school. I have learnt hugely from my clients, both young and old, and continue to be amazed by their capacity to change, grow and show courage, even when faced with the most desperate of circumstances. I completed my Foundation Degree with distinction in 2013 and I m currently employed at the College as part-time lecturer teaching on the Level 4 Certificate in Counselling course. I have also just enrolled on the Level 5 CPCAB Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapeutic Skills. There is no doubt this course has played an integral part in my ongoing journey.

Northern Regional College 87 Student Profile Janice Thomas Level 6 CPCAB Certificate in Therapeutic Counselling Supervision My background training is in Psychology. I completed a BSSc in Psychology from Queens University in 1994 which I followed up with a MSc in Psychoanalytic Developmental Psychology from the Anna Freud Centre / University College London in 1995. I worked for 4 years in child protection work and with adults with learning disabilities. My career took a turn at a fork in the road which I arrived at through a close friend having a passion to set up a counselling centre. She asked if I would like to complete some counselling training and I did, training up to level 4 Counselling Diploma. I began working as a Counsellor in 2003, spending 3 years working in community addictions for NICAS (now renamed Addictions NI). I became an accredited Counsellor in 2007. In 2005, I also began working as a Counselling Trainer for both Christian Guidelines and Barnabas Training. In 2009, I began working as a Tutor on the Foundation Degree Programme at NRC. I tutor modules in Integrative Practice, Developing the Therapeutic Relationship and Supervised Practice. I also train on CPD days including Games People Play and Window into the world of Addictions. In 2007, I took the step of setting up in private practice. So my current working week patchwork includes private counselling, sessional counselling on behalf of New Life Belfast, being a trainer for NRC and just recently, some supervision work. I am also a qualified Myers-Briggs Consultant and regularly complete individual and couple work using this fun and engaging personality and communication tool. I have recently completed the Level 1 training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. I have loved this training and way of working, by exploring how our story is woven into our physiology. I am completing the level 6 supervision course this year as I felt that I needed a new challenge and I wanted to broaden my work base. For some time, I have been exploring the idea of getting involved in supervision work and this has been borne out both of my own enjoyment of supervision and also a sense of the growing recognition of a need for supervision across many disciplines. Supervision has always been a space for me to be me and to reflect and process my work, in the presence of an empathic other. I have found the course at NRC to be an enjoyable and inspiring time. The tutor uses a mixture of experiential group sessions and group training / lectures to facilitate our learning of different supervision models and styles. Coming from a creative / child therapy training background, I have found the use of creative techniques a feature of this course which I have enjoyed. Developing your own supervision practice is part of the course, as is making use of supervision for your supervision work. So this course provides not only an academic qualification but also has practice hours incorporated. My long term passion would be to work with leaders, helping them to release their potential and find their authentic voices.

Student Profile Jakob Allen Currently studying toward the FdA in Interactive Design, Jakob Allen progressed to the Foundation Degree after completing a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Interactive Media. Jakob studied the Level 3 in NRC s Ballymoney campus 2012 to 2014, graduating with an impressive D*D*D grade. Before this, Jakob studied at Coleraine Academical Institution securing 7 GCSEs. Jakob told us that he chose the FdA instead of a university degree as this seemed a smoother progression and that he felt more comfortable knowing the college, the tutors and support mechanisms available. Being interested in motion graphics and graphic design, I chose the FdA as it delivered this content.
