About the Catalyst Cloud The Catalyst Cloud is New Zealand's first cloud to deliver the five essential characteristics of Cloud Computing, as defined by NIST 1. Using the Catalyst Cloud means that you can focus on your core business, and your customers, and have your IT infrastructure provided as a service. With a pay-as-you-go model, it requires no upfront investments or long-term commitments and offers extremely competitive hourly rates. Illustration 1: Usage cost report showing an estimate for the current usage and the history over the last twelve months. The Catalyst Cloud provides you with a virtual private cloud where you are in full control of your IT infrastructure. It brings agility to your business, by allowing compute, storage and network resources to be obtained and configured quickly with minimal friction (fully self-service). You can provision resources, configured to suit your demands, in minutes and have them scale in real time (elastic). It is a fully programmable infrastructure that can be driven via APIs, command line tools or a userfriendly web dashboard. This means every operation in your infrastructure, from provisioning your systems to their day to day maintenance, can be automated, resulting in unprecedented levels of efficiency. Besides the native OpenStack APIs (a de-facto cloud standard), it also presents an EC2 and S3 emulation layer, enabling customers to more easily transition from Amazon AWS. "A real game changer for NZ and open source globally." - Jay Daley, Chief Executive at New Zealand Domain Name Registry The Catalyst Cloud is hosted onshore and provided by an incorporated company with its registered head office located in Wellington. The services are governed by the provisions of the 1 http://csrc.nist.gov/publications/nistpubs/800-145/sp800-145.pdf Page 1

New Zealand legal framework, including the New Zealand Privacy Act 1993, eliminating data sovereignty risks usually associated with the use of the cloud services in other jurisdictions. "We have gone from zero control with no stability to absolute control on a very stable platform."- Rob Anderson, Web Development Manager at Careers New Zealand Get in contact with us You can find more information about the Catalyst Cloud on our website: https://catalyst.net.nz/cloud. These services are available via the user friendly dashboard or via the comprehensive and powerful web-service APIs or command line tools. Infrastructure services Compute On-demand compute resources that scale with your business and are paid by the hour. Launch, manage and terminate compute instances (virtual machines) in seconds. Choose the size of your compute instance and resize it whenever you want. Bootstrap compute instances from public or private pre-configured machine images. Select the networks a compute instance is connected to. Illustration 2: New compute instance being launched Console access to your compute instances via the web browser. Page 2

Full root/admin access to your compute instances. Manage your SSH access keys which can be injected into compute instances (Linux/Unix) for access control. Snapshot compute instances, so you can instantly clone them or retain a working version before making changes to it. EC2 compatible APIs 2, enabling customers to more easily transition from Amazon AWS. High-availability. Running instances are restarted automatically on another server in the event of server failures. Live migration for planned maintenance of our physical servers, so your compute instances are not affected during server hardware maintenance. Block Storage Reliable, scalable and fast block storage for compute instances. Our block device storage is powered by Ceph, an open source solution that converts a cluster of servers into robust distributed storage. We use separate 10Gbps highly available networks for storage replication and storage traffic, providing your applications with increased I/O throughput and higher performance. Create, manage, delete storage volumes. Boot compute instances from persistent volumes. Attach or detach additional storage volumes to compute instances. Create, restore, manage and delete snapshots of storage volumes. Snapshots can be used to clone storage volumes or to roll back to a previous known state. We offer a standard storage tier that combines SSDs with spinning disks to provide great performance and value for money. We can provide and introduce new storage tiers, with options for performance, resiliency and availability, according to your needs. All prices are in New Zealand dollars and are exclusive of GST. Object storage Durable internet scale storage offered via a simple web-services interface that can hold any amount of data. The perfect place for your application to store its files or media assets. Our storage solution is self-healing and ensures the replication levels desired for your data, so it is available when you need it. Create, manage and delete object storage containers. Upload and retrieve objects from containers. Manage the permissions (ACLs) of containers. Three replicas of your objects are stored on different servers to ensure objects' availability and resiliency. Automatic health checks (CRC) are executed frequently to prevent data loss due to disk corruption. S3 compatible APIs 3, so you do not have to re-factor applications which currently use Amazon S3. Platform services Cloud orchestration (beta) Cloud orchestration allows you to deploy applications and infrastructure using a simple template language that describes the required resources and their relationship. The orchestration service manages the life-cycle of application stacks on your behalf. When a template is modified, the service orchestrates the required changes to the infrastructure in the appropriate order. Templates can be managed like code and stored on your preferred version control system. The orchestration service can be integrated to configuration management systems to provision and manage software. It can run Puppet or Chef in standalone mode, or be used to present compute instances back to the Puppet/Chef master for software configuration. The service is currently in beta and available via the APIs and command line tools. It will be soon exposed via the web dashboard as well. Illustration 4: A preview of the upcoming orchestration dashboard Create, manage and delete application stacks. Validate stack templates. Show list of resources belonging to a stack. Price: There are no additional charges for the use of the cloud orchestration service. You will only Page 7

pay for the resources consumed by your running application stacks (such as compute, network and storage). Management Usage costs Keeping an eye on your running costs is important when infrastructure and IT becomes this easy on the Catalyst Cloud. To help you do a great job of managing your budget, we have introduced a new usage costs report under the management panel. Illustration 5: A sample cost report The usage costs report shows you an estimate for your usage within the current region. It provides a breakdown per service, so you can quickly spot which services you are using the most and where your savings opportunities are. It also shows you the aggregate cost per month over the last twelve months, so you can identify usage patterns and project the expected usage for the current month. Price: There are no additional charges for the use of the usage costs report. The technology behind our cloud OpenStack is free open source software for building public and private clouds, providing a scalable, flexible and powerful platform to organisations of all sizes. It is the fastest growing open source project in history, with over 480 companies and 21,000+ individuals involved with it. OpenStack drastically reduces the risks of lock-in associated with proprietary solutions and is quickly becoming an industry standard for cloud computing. Having successfully delivered Infrastructure-as-a-Service over the last three years, the project continues with an aggressive Page 8

roadmap and is now heading towards the delivery of Platform-as-a-Service components, such as database, message queue and application life-cycle management as a service. Ceph is free open source software for building reliable storage systems on generic hardware. The system is designed to be completely distributed, without a single point of failure, scalable to the exabyte level and to be both self-healing and self-managing. Data is seamlessly replicated, making it fault tolerant. It provides object storage, block storage and file storage from a single solution, simplifying the storage stack, drastically reducing storage costs and administration overheads. Roadmap Catalyst has laid out an aggressive roadmap for our cloud and will continually introduce new service offerings to it. Features coming in the near future include: Management User access control panel Infrastructure services Load-balancer as a Service Replication of object storage across all our regions DNS as a Service Platform services Database as a Service Message Queue as a Service Application life-cycle management Talk to us about your business requirements. Our team is very responsive and can introduce new service offerings within short time-frames. We invite you to join us in prioritising the features that will come to our cloud next. Page 9
