Understand Your Credit Report (ireport) - Personal What is your own Credit Report (ireport)? Credit information is supplied by all Commercial Banks, Specialized Banks, authorized leasing and finance companies who are members of CRIB. The information is transferred electronically through their head office to CRIB and updated at the end of each month. According to the provisions of the CRIB Act, all member institutions are legally liable to submit their customers credit information to the bureau. The credit information stored in the Bureau is divided into two categories such as Consumer (individual) and Corporate (business). As an individual, your credit information will be collected under your National Identity Card number (if Sri Lankan) or Passport number (if Non- Sri Lankan). CRIB collects credit related information, on borrowers, both individual and corporate, and provides such collated information in the form of a credit report to the member institutions or the person to whom that information relates to, on demand. The credit information report which is issued on request of the person to whom that reformation relates to is known as an ireport. As per the provisions of the Credit Information Bureau of Sri Lanka Act No 18 of 1990 (as amended by Act No 08 of 1995 and Act No 42 of 2008), you have now the authority to request your own credit report (ireport) from the Bureau. Why is my own credit report (ireport) important? Your ireport gives details both positive and negative of all credit facilities availed of from any of the authorized lending institutions. In fact having a good repayment history in a credit report is the best reference you could have to prove your credit worthiness which in turn prompts lending institutions to offer you attractive terms & concessionary interest rates. Your ireport will provide you the following benefits. View your credit status before the lending institutions does. Helps you streamline your repayment habits. Eliminate erroneous data, for an updated and accurate credit report. Helps you to monitor indirect liabilities. Helps you to be a disciplined borrower. We suggest that you obtain your ireport at least once in six months. How can you improve your credit worthiness? - Try to balance your monthly income and expenditure always and borrow what you can repay. It is necessary to consider the regular monthly expenditures such as electricity, water, telephone etc before you obtain a loan. - Discuss the terms & conditions of the loan with your lender and have a clear understanding before you obtain the facility. - Installments need to be paid as agreed and it is always better to settle early when possible. Specially, the dues on credit cards which would help you to maintain your credit worthiness. - When you sign as a Guarantor for a credit facility, it is important that you have a clear understanding about the repayment ability of the borrower, because you will be the ultimate re payer if the borrower fails. 1
