In 2008 Brescia had a population of about 200,000 inhabitants. The town is served by an excellent motorway and railway network; distances to Milan and Verona are 92 km and 67 km respectively. The nearest airports are Montichiari (VBS), Verona (VRN), Bergamo (BGY), Milan Malpensa (MXP), Milan Linate (LIN), and Venice (VCE). A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BRESCIA Some of the most ancient Universities in the world are found in Italy including Bologna (established in 1088), Modena (1175), Padua (1222), and others. In the last decades of the 20th century university education largely grew within the society and spread in space as well. The University of Brescia was officially established in 1982, building on previous courses given case by case by the nearby Universities of Milan (and Milan Polytechnic as well) and Parma. It gathers three Faculties since then (Economics, Engineering, Medicine), to which a Faculty of Law was added in 1996.
In Italy higher education is reserved to university courses lasting 5 years (or 3+2 years with an intermediate 1 st level bachelor diploma), following the 13 years of primary and secondary education. The University of Brescia achieved immediate success as well as strong growth, underpinned by: the nature of the Brescia industrial district (the 1st one in Italy for surface and the 3rd one for economic relevance); its focal geographical location (between Milan and Venice and proximity to other important and ancient towns of northern Italy); the presence of one of the largest and most efficient Hospitals of Northern Italy and the high level of entrepreneurial ability of its population. Some 23,000 students graduated from 1986 to 2007, while the enrolments in the year 2008 are as follows: Economics 3343 Engineering 4142 Law 2327 Medicine 4155 The Campus facilities (http://www.unibs.it/on-line/cedisu/home.html) and the student residences can accomodate up to 330 students, visiting professors and scientists.
