SMARTER ELECTRICITY USE SAVE WITH SYNERGY SMARTPOWER

SMARTER ELECTRICITY USE When it comes to energy use there are Peak times and Off-Peak consumption times, and they change throughout the year. If everyone uses electricity during peak times a fair bit of strain can be placed on the electricity supply. Synergy SmartPower helps you use electricity well by offering lower rates during off-peak periods. Like using extra blankets instead of the portable heater on those chilly winter evenings. And avoiding air con usage in midday summer peak times can actually save you money. 1

What is Synergy SmartPower? Synergy SmartPower offers you electricity rates that change depending on the time you use it. The rates are higher in Peak times and lower in times, to encourage you to shift your electricity usage. For you, this means the more you shift your electricity usage to periods, the more money you could save. Easier to save than you might think Depending on your lifestyle, saving with Synergy SmartPower can be quite easy. For example, if you work during the day in summer, you ll typically use less electricity during the summer peak period. During winter the peak period changes so this may require the most lifestyle changes. But if you swap the electric heater for a dressing gown and use an extra blanket instead of an electric one, you ll contribute to your savings. Most of all if you can shift most of your electricity to the periods then you could be saving even more. The finer details There are four different time periods within Synergy SmartPower the key is to make sure you avoid or use less during the Peak period, as it has the highest charge. The other three periods, Weekday shoulder and Weekend shoulder are lower than the standard residential (A1) consumption charge (currently 25.7029 cents per unit). The graphs on the next page will give you a better idea of how it all works. Making the most of it The biggest savings you will make on consumption charges* come when you shift your usage to the period. This period extends from 9pm to (Australian Western Standard Time) all year round. You ll also receive better rates during the Weekday and Weekend shoulder periods. You should try to use as little electricity as possible in the more expensive peak periods - during the day in summer and at the beginning or end of each day in winter. If you think you might have trouble doing this, then Synergy SmartPower might not be the right product for you and you should maybe remain on your current tariff. *The consumption charge is the variable charge element of your electricity tariff based on the amount of electricity you consume. 2

Same supply charge The Synergy SmartPower supply charge ** is the same as the daily supply charge rate for the residential Synergy Home Plan (A1) tariff of 47.1834 cents per day. So you won t pay a premium supply charge for the Synergy SmartPower product. 1. Taking your appliances Once you ve decided on SmartPower, if you want to get the most out of it, you ll have to actually do some shifting. Of course, it s not practical to switch your fridge off any time of day. But there are other appliances that are easy to shift. In summer you could wash your clothes first thing in the morning, run your dishwasher after 9pm and give your air-con a rest during the Peak period. You could even have a timer fitted to your electric water heater, reticulation, your bore and pool pump; after all, they are appliances. Timers are your friends Take a quick look at your existing appliances. You might be surprised to find that the washing machine you ve been using for years actually has a timer. You can also have timers professionally installed or simply use plug-in ones. And when you buy new appliances, check that they have a built-in timer or you ll be stuck doing things the old fashioned way by manually switching your appliances on or off at the right times. Getting Synergy SmartPower If you think your household could benefit from Synergy SmartPower, complete and submit an online application form at synergy.net.au/smartpower Once your application is received, we ll send Western Power to reprogram or replace your meter so it s compatible with Synergy SmartPower. The prices for reprogramming your existing meter or installing a new compatible meter are listed on the next page and will show up on your next bill after you have selected SmartPower. It s important to remember that you can switch back to the single rate (A1) tariff at anytime, but you will need to pay a $66 meter reprogram fee. 4
