Introduction First time working in a school Over forty years in Information Technology (IT) You hear a lot about how different things were in the past Kids have it easy today I heard the same thing when I was your age and my parents heard that when they were your age PROGRESS I d like to share some examples of progress I ve experienced My family didn t have a TV until I was in the sixth grade When we finally did get one, we only had four channels I visited the library, read a lot, played outdoors, and spent time visiting relatives One of my uncles inspired me early in life with his electronics hobby He built a light and sound system in his basement https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpvconxyo8e&feature=youtu.be
When I was in school, computers were not very common. My first job, the computer looked like this: Floor Space Temp Control Large Staff It would take two hundred thousand of these huge computers to match the capacity of ONE of today s laptops
Progress No computer course of study was available in colleges then Each manufacturer had their own computer language No standard software or operating systems In order to become a software engineer after college, I had to: Take an exam to see if I had basic skills Pass an eight week on the job training course Progress from where we were when I started, to where we are today took a lot of steps that included every element of STEAM! One of our STEAM presenters said that Engineers took Inventor s ideas and made them real, so People had to see the computer s potential, then take necessary steps to make these possibilities a reality
Federal Standards Developed In the late sixties, Dr. Grace Hopper, a mathematician, conceptualized machine independent computer languages and led a team developing the first software language that could be used on any computer. She is also credited with the term bugs in reference to computer glitches, inspired by removing an actual moth from a computer.
