The Arthur R. and Hazel Johnsen Memorial Scholarships for students from Mason High School and Great Oaks Career Centers, Kings High School and the Warren County Career Center! These college scholarships will be awarded each year to two deserving high school seniors residing in the city of Mason, Ohio or Deerfield Township, Ohio who attend Mason High School, Kings High School, the Great Oaks Career Centers or the Warren County Career Center.! The renewable scholarships are valued at $1,000 each year for four years. Selection of the scholarship recipient will be administered by the Rotary Club of Mason and Deerfield Foundation in consultation with local school counselors.! Also, $500 college scholarships will be awarded each year to two high school seniors residing in the city of Mason Ohio or Deerfield Township Ohio who attend What the Scholarship Committee Will Evaluate! Consideration will be given to any student who demonstrates:! Academic ability and displays an enthusiasm for high school or vocational school studies. Mr. Johnsen recognized that all teenagers have the potential to excel; therefore, standardized testing scores will not be the only factor evaluated by the scholarship committee.! The desire to be their best and displays an exemplary attitude with a desire to succeed.! Scholastic achievement, moral character, the promise of leadership in life, and demonstration of Rotary Internationalʼs motto of Service above Self.

About the Rotary Scholarships Program The Arthur R. and Hazel Johnsen Memorial Scholarships were established in memory of Arthur and Hazel Johnsen, whose untiring efforts helped establish new Rotary clubs in District 6670 in southwest Ohio. The Arthur R. and Hazel Johnsen Memorial Scholarships will be funded by Rotarians and friends who desire to honor the Johnsens and their contributions. Who is Eligible! Residents of the city of Mason Ohio and Deerfield Township Ohio who are seniors at Mason High School, Kings High School, Great Oaks Career Centers, Warren County Career Center.! Students must apply and be accepted for enrollment in an accredited college or university, institution of higher education, technology, or the arts. Other Student Qualifications! Students who apply for these scholarships will be evaluated on their community service, economic need and academic achievement.! The Rotary Club of Mason and Deerfield and its foundation provide the scholarships to encourage students attending Mason High School, Kings High School and Great Oaks and Warren County career centers to engage in community service.! Recipients must attend an accredited school for the term immediately following receipt of the scholarship and must pursue a course of study leading to a two-year or four-year degree.
Who Will Review Applications! The Rotary Scholarship Committee shall be appointed by the Rotary Club of Mason and Deerfield Foundation and the recipients shall be selected by this Committee. Decisions of the Scholarship Committee are final. How to Apply Instructions to High School Seniors! 1. Community service will be evaluated on the basis of your written response to the following statement, which must not exceed two typewritten pages, attached to this application.! We are interested in how you have used your time and abilities to serve others outside of your school. Please list in order of importance to you those pursuits that best represent your service to others through extracurricular, employment, religious and community interests.! Tell when you were involved in each activity, the amount of time devoted, and specifically how you served others.! Then select one activity that is most meaningful to you and discuss the reasons for your selection.! 2. Academic achievement will be evaluated on the basis of your high school gradepoint average and rank in your high school class. The Scholarship Committee will require:! A copy of your transcript showing courses and grades received in grades 9-12;! A letter from your high school guidance counselor indicating your class rank and the number of students in your high school class;! The counselorʼs letter should address how you demonstrate an exemplary attitude and a desire to succeed. The counselor should note that consideration will be given equally to scholastic achievement, moral character and the promise of leadership in life and demonstration of service above self. The Scholarship Committee will accept documents submitted to other organizations youʼve applied to for scholarships.! 3. Financial need will be evaluated based on upon your response to the questions on the attached form. You should note any special circumstances.! 4. Recommendations. Please include two letters from persons outside of your family, who are familiar with your community service activities and non-academic achievements. The
Scholarship Committee will accept documents submitted to other organizations youʼve applied to for scholarships. 5. Application Deadline. The materials listed above must be returned by March 15 to your high school guidance counselor, who will forward them to the Scholarship Committee. Information you provide on your application will remain confidential. All applications (except for the winners) will be destroyed after the scholarship recipients have been selected.
