The DDU has again joined forces with leaders in education and oral healthcare research at the Eastman to hold a thought-provoking conference in London on 28 September 2012. Designed for the whole dental team, the one-day risk management conference is on the theme: Forewarned is Forearmed and will examine the clinical developments and dento-legal implications of three key specialist areas: paediatric dentistry; oral surgery and oral medicine. Dento-legal advisers and clinical experts will give practical and informative presentations on: the latest clinical thinking in paediatric dentistry, such as dental caries and neglect the difficult areas of consent and obtaining parental authority when treating children the common pitfalls of dento-alveolar surgery and how to avoid them the role of dental professionals in oral cancer screening and how to manage patients with potentially malignant disease what can lead to a negligence claim, what dental professionals can do to help the DDU defend them, strategies to help avoid the stress of a claim in the first place and how dental professionals may be held accountable when something goes wrong. Topics covered: a brief review of the clinical features of potentially malignant and malignant disease of the mouth. the appropriate methods of referral of patients to specialists. framework for the early management of patients in the primary healthcare setting who present with potentially malignant disease of the mouth. the role of dentists in the screening and prevention of oral cancer. duty of care, breach of duty and causation: what is expected of the dentist and the effect of a delayed diagnosis. an insight into what can lead to a negligence claim and some interesting case studies. 15.45 Break How to avoid meeting a lawyer 16.15 Nick Peacock This presentation will provide an overview of the legal principles involved in compensation claims and professional disciplinary cases. Speakers Andrew Eder Andrew Eder is Director of Education and CPD at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute and Associate Dean for Continuing Education at the UCL School of Life and Medical Sciences. As a Specialist in Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics, he also maintains a referral specialist private practice in central London. Professor Eder has a special interest in the aetiology, demographics and clinical management of patients with tooth surface loss and is also Clinical Director of the London Tooth Wear Centre. Stefano Fedele Dr Fedele has an international reputation in research of immunologically-mediated and potentially malignant disease of the oral mucosa. He is Principal Investigator on a number of NIHR-funded studies of novel diagnostic methods for oral squamous cell carcinoma and the management of radiation-associated xerostomia. Rupert Hoppenbrouwers A former GDP, Rupert was also Director of the School of Dental Hygiene at University College Hospital, London from 1980 to 1986. He has lectured and written widely on risk management and dento-legal matters, and he has a particular interest in litigation. He is currently Chairman of the UK Dental Law and Ethics Forum. Colin Hopper Colin has been involved in postgraduate oral surgery education for over 20 years, teaching the practical skills of oral and maxillofacial surgery. He has an interest in assessment and outcome measurements of third molar surgery and the value of 3 dimensional imaging in treatment planning. Adele Johnson Adele is a Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry at the Eastman Dental Hospital, UCLH. She qualified in Birmingham and completed her registrar training at UCLH and Great Ormond Street Hospitals. Her main areas of interest include the management of medically compromised patients and dental trauma. Adele is Lead for safeguarding children at the Eastman Dental Hospital and responsible for audit and clinical governance in her department. Susan N Jie Susan N Jie qualified from Guys Hospital Dental School in 1986 and then worked as a general dental practitioner for 20 years. She worked for the Dental Law Partnership for five years, advising on negligence claims. Susan joined the DDU in 2011 as a part-time dento-legal adviser offering advice and assistance to members with issues relating to treatment of patients. Nicholas Peacock Nick is a barrister who specialises in clinical negligence work, regulatory/disciplinary work (including GMC and GDC) and general healthcare law (including coroners inquests, clinical confidentiality and consent to treatment cases). He has a particular interest in dental work, both claims and disciplinary. He is instructed by patients, healthcare professionals via their defence organisations or professional indemnity providers and NHS Trusts/Primary Care Trusts. Stephen Porter Professor Porter s research is focused upon the management of immunologicaly mediated oral disease and the oral and dental implications of viral infection. His clinical interests are the non-surgical management of complex immunologically-mediated and potentially malignant disease of the mouth and salivary glands. Nick Torlot Nick Torlot spent 19 years as Assistant and then Clinical Director of Salaried Dental Services in Hampshire, while continuing to practise clinical dentistry. He has been involved in dental education as an adviser and vocational trainer with the London Deanery and as a trainer with the Winchester scheme. Nick joined the DDU as a dento-legal adviser in 2010.
