Introduction The broad, long-term goals for a comprehensive technology plan will address priorities in the following categories: curriculum and learning administration and management communication and information access The following examples illustrate varied ways schools/communities express how they might address their technology vision and mission through their long-term goals. Some of the sample goals are more general in style than others. The technology planning team may use these goals and objectives as a guide. Curriculum and Learning Samples Curriculum and Learning Goals and Objectives Goal 1: All educators will engage in a process of review and assessment of specific instructional strategies with the potential to improve learning for the range of student diversity represented in the district. Objective 1.1: Objective 1.2: Objective 1.3: Teachers will investigate and demonstrate the use of technology resources to support instructional strategies that address the multiple learning styles of all students. Teachers will investigate and demonstrate the use of technology resources to support instructional strategies that address the needs of special education populations, including bilingual and ESL students. Teachers will investigate and demonstrate the use of technology resources to support instructional strategies that engage students in cooperative learning activities. Goal 2: All educators will identify, prioritize, and incorporate the use of technology to achieve learning objectives in all disciplines within each schools curriculum as appropriate Objective 2.1: Objective 2.2: Educators will explore, identify, and integrate technology enhanced activities to achieve learning objectives within their respective disciplines. Educators will share successful integration practices with colleagues via email and electronic bulletin boards. Goal 3: All students will use technology to access and analyze information from a wide variety of sources including the Internet. Objective 3.1: Objective 3.2: Elementary students will be able to research a topic using video sources (DVD, laserdisk, CD-ROM), electric archives (CD-ROM based), and age appropriate Internet sources. Secondary students will demonstrate effective search strategies and include proper citations when using the Internet as a resource. etechplanner Copyright 2000, Pennsylvania Department of Education Office of Educational Technology Page 1 of 6

Additional Curriculum and Learning Goals All educators will access curriculum materials from a variety of sources including the Internet, and weave them into their presentation of curriculum as appropriate. All educators will be empowered with technology resources to design technology-enriched learning environments to assist students with the attainment of required curriculum objectives. All students will have access to the Internet for student publishing, accessing experts and engaging with them about their specific expertise, and collaborating with peers from a distance via networks. (could also fall in the Communication and Information Access section) All students will learn and practice technology skills and ethical use of technologies that will prepare them for the 21st century workplace. All students will use instructional technologies to assist students with the attainment of concept development, higher-order thinking, critical thinking, and applied problem solving skills. All students will use technology as a data gathering and analysis tool to improve learning in mathematics, science, social studies, and other disciplines. All students will use technology in fine arts curriculum to explore and access ideas, feelings, beliefs, and creative expression. All students will use technology in the design, building, and testing of solutions to real-world problems. All students will use technology to enhance skills for working both independently and in collaborative groups. All students will use technology to enhance their presentation and productivity skills. All students will use technology to think critically and solve complex problems. All students will use wide-area networks to access text and video information for individual and group research projects. All students will utilize a diverse array of developmentally appropriate instructional technologies to improve their reading, writing, and communication skills. District-wide instructional databases will be provided to help students expand their research/information processing skills. Student awareness of a multicultural world will be enhanced through telecommunications access and communication with students and people throughout the world. (could also fall in the Communication and Information Access section) The school/district will provide equal access to instructional uses of the computer for all students. etechplanner Copyright 2000, Pennsylvania Department of Education Office of Educational Technology Page 2 of 6

Administration and Management Samples Administration and Management Goals and Objectives Goal 1: Technology will allow administrators to gather and share current and timely information for decision-making at the school board, administration, school, and classroom levels. Objective 1.1: Objective 1.2: Objective 1.3: Administrators will access a document storage/retrieval system to efficiently search among policies, meeting notes, research articles, press releases, and other district communications to gather timely information on specific topics and issues. Administrators will use email to communicate information currently sent in paper format (fax, print memo) whenever appropriate. The school board will populate and maintain a section of the district web site including minutes from board meetings and decisions make by the board. Goal 2: The school/district will implement a district-wide student information management system to efficiently track student progress, provide teachers with accurate and readily assessable information for planning, and eliminate redundancy of effort in the process of managing student information. Objective 2.1: Objective 2.2: Teachers and building administrators will have ongoing access to a district decision-support system that will generate timely reports on student achievement on specific learning standards and, if available, as measured by multiple assessment strategies. All middle and high school teachers will store and manage student assignments and grades using the district-wide student information management system. Additional Administration and Management Goals All school, building, and administrative offices will have the capacity to acquire information and perform document processing applications such as: publishing, forms management, data base, spreadsheet, and graphics. Communication technologies (e.g. email, electronic bulletin boards, electronic conferencing) will reduce the number of meetings and time spent on necessary logistical coordination while increasing ease, timeliness, and channels of communication. School/district staff will gain proficiency with administrative applications to increase productivity, improve management, and enhance decision-making. Technology will be used to facilitate the systemic assessment of curriculum, instruction, and learner outcomes. The school/district will use technology to coordinate the connecting and sharing of all educational resources among all building, and district personnel.
