Fresh from our lab to yours... More than 100 years of professional expertise, excellent service, and impeccable quality... formulating specialty laboratory animal diets for data you can trust. TestDiet is made up of a team of nutritionists with more than 30 years worth of experience with formulation, research, experimental design, publishing, and nutritional consultation. Because of their expertise, they will work with you one-on-one to design control and experimental diets that fit your research program. TestDiet animal nutritionists consult with researchers to custom formulate and produce purified and grain-based diets for animal research in academic, government, and pharmaceutical laboratories around the world. Our scientists also conduct research in collaboration with universities and through contract laboratories for the development and refinement of our products. Sound Reasons to Choose TestDiet Experience & Expertise TestDiet is committed to providing the highest quality lab animal research diets, exemplary service, and absolute reliability at a fair and reasonable price. TestDiet Produces a Wide Range of Laboratory Animal Diets for determining species-specific Nutrient Requirements, the study of Diet-Induced Disease Models, Specific Diseases & Behaviors, Phenotypic Expression, and Drug Development, including: Purified Diets Grain-Based Diets Liquid Diets Tablets Medicated Diets for Experimental Purposes Enrichment Treats 1

Purified Diets With purified diets, materials and methods are easy to report, repeat, and modify. In purified diets, nutrients are derived from precise refined ingredients obtained from reliable, consistent, traceable suppliers. Your research benefits from constant formulae, with precise batch-to-batch consistency, whenever and wherever your research is repeated. When TestDiet designs custom purified diet formulae for your particular research needs, you maintain complete control over the nutrient composition and can study the effects of variations of specific nutritional components. TestDiet can formulate new diets based on existing TestDiet products, diets reported in the literature, that from a previous experiment, a diet originally produced by another manufacturer, or an entirely new formula based on your individual needs. Calorie-balanced Calorie-balanced formulae are most commonly used for obesity and diabetes research. These diets deliver the same micronutrients and fiber for each calorie consumed, even though the quantity of those ingredients may increase or decrease as one or more of the energy sources varies. A small representation of purified diet formulae may be viewed on our web site at www.testdiet.com thousands more are available upon request from one of our consulting nutritionists. The fundamental purposes of purified diets are: Full knowledge of all ingredients Open formulations Precise nutrient composition Repeatable Easily modified Quality Consequently, using purified diets results in precise and repeatable data. 2

Grain-Based Diets The specific ingredients in LabDiet natural ingredient grain-based animal feeds are tightly managed to achieve nutritional consistency, or Constant Nutrition. TestDiet may be able to meet your research needs by adding nutritional components to standard grain-based LabDiet products. Modifications can also be made to grain-based diets by adding compounds or nutrient- based ingredients directly to an existing LabDiet product. TestDiet is also the only diet provider that can fully modify a LabDiet product from scratch without potentially diluting other nutrients within that diet. Thus creating a control and experimental diet with similar ingredient and nutrient profiles. Additions of Compounds to Diets Adding test compounds to standard and custom grain-based and purified diets is an effective, accurate, and convenient means of dosing animals for research purposes, studying the effects of pharmaceuticals, and testing new drug formulae. With precision and consistency, compounds, chemicals, medications, or nutrients can be homogeneously blended into a variety of diet types. Our cold pelleting process prevents the destruction or degradation of your compounds. For any test compound supplied for modified additions, a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), listing as Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS), or a statement regarding its safety and handling is required. TestDiet reserves the right to accept or reject a test compound based on evaluation of its safety. In order to ensure the safety of our employees, TestDiet does not handle any toxins, carcinogens, mutagens, radioactive substances, controlled dangerous substances, or live organisms (viruses, bacteria, etc.). Medicated Diets for Experimental Purposes At the request of your veterinarian, TestDiet can add medications to any grain-based or purified diet for efficient, economical, and accurate dosing. Common used medicated diets may include, but are not limited to, fenbendazole, ivermectin, and Sulfa/Trim. Diet Forms Pellets, Powder, Liquid, Tablets (Precision Pellets) All diets are available as pellets and powder (or meal); many can be formed into tablets (precision pellets); or made into concentrates for liquid diets. Diets can be color-coded for easy identification by animal technicians. Pellets TestDiet uses cold-pressed pelleting for preservation of experimental compounds. Pellets are approximately 1.25 cm (1/2 ) in diameter by 2 cm to 2.5 cm (3/4 to 1 ) long; they are also available in smaller diameters (3/8 or 3/16 for ferrets, guinea pigs, rabbits and other species). Advantages of Pellets Compared to a Powder or Meal Form: Pellets tend to be more stable than powders. Most of the ingredients and any added test compounds are trapped inside the pellet, less exposed to air, moisture, and light. Once mixed, the ingredients do not settle out or separate but remain homogeneously distributed within the pellet. Using pellets tends to result in significantly less spillage and feed wastage, which saves both money and labor. Pellets can be fed in almost any feeder or hopper, even without a hopper by simply tossing into the cage. By feeding pellets, rodent incisors can be worn down. Powder Powder is a useful diet form for incorporation of test compounds through TestDiet or your own facility. Powder diets can also be used for aged animals that may have dental problems. Liquid Diet Mixes TestDiet suspendable liquid diets are for all species and any research focus. The dry powder is delivered to your facility to then be mixed with a liquid of choice. Liquid diets are commonly used in nutritional studies on fetal alcohol syndrome and alcoholism. 6

Tablets (Precision Pellets) Grain-based tablets can be made from the standard LabDiet products commonly fed to lab animals. Tablets based on purified diets offer more exact control over diet composition and tend to be sweeter tasting than grain-based tablets. Purified and grain-based diets can be compressed into tablets or precision pellets of precise weights and sizes for a variety of purposes: Efficient, economical, and accurate medication dosing. Feed restriction, portion-controlled feeding, and estimation of feed intake. Color-free tablets can be produced for toxicological studies. Reward and behavior reinforcement.* Use with operant pellet dispensers. * Sucrose, Cellulose, Papaya, and Vitamin Supplement Tablets are not a complete diet and should be used sparingly as a reward or for nutritional supplementation. Enrichment Tablets are nutritionally sound tablets designed for precise feeding. A variety of flavors and sizes are available.
