PART 1 INTRODUCTION AND GUIDELINES Introduction The GENERIC SOCIAL WORK PLACEMENT Guidance & Assessment Portfolio specifies the National Occupational Standards for Social Work - Key Roles and units, to be achieved on placement and these have been mapped to Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards of Proficiency (see Appendix 1a) By the end of this placement the student will be expected to have met outcomes in relation to: Social work National Occupational Standards Key roles 2 and 5, units: 7, 15, 17 (and 8 if the placement offers the learning opportunity) and in doing so demonstrate achievement of The transferable skills as they relate to the Standards of Proficiency for entry to the nursing register of Professional & Ethical practice. Personal and Professional Development P (NMC Circular 07/2007, see appendix 3a) A practice assessor for Social work will: Supervise the student in the required activities that address the specified learning outcomes related to the placement experience Assesses component skills directly related to the professional s own area of competence and scope of practice. NMC registrant mentor The placement in relation to the achievement of the mapped transferable skills for nursing will be overseen by a NMC registrant mentor or practice teacher. The NMC registrant mentor will meet with the student and placement supervisor at agreed predetermined points to monitor the student s achievement in the context of the part of the register that the student intends to enter. The mentor/ practice teacher is accountable for assessment with due regard and confirming overall proficiency (or not) in the specified NMC Standards of Proficiency at the end of the placement. (NMC Circular 26/2007 p 4-5. See appendix 2a) The student is required to meet with the NMC registrant mentor and provide additional supportive evidence to demonstrate the achievement of the mapped NMC Standards of Proficiency for entry to the nursing register. Part 4 Recording progress in achieving the NMC Standards of Proficiency. The overseeing registrant mentor will review progress with the practice placement supervisor (Social work) and this will inform the review of progress with the student. The overseeing NMC registrant mentor will meet with the student at pre-determined times. This will be to review progress and discuss the transferability to nursing of student evidence collated for the generic social work assessment portfolio and this additional evidence document. The NMC registrant mentor will record the review of the student s progress in meeting the NMC standards of proficiency on: 1. The Assessment Record for achievement of the Standards of Proficiency. 2. The Progress Meeting recording sheets. It is expected that the student will have a minimum of two progress meetings, one approximately mid way on placement and a final progress meeting. If there are concerns regarding a student s progress additional progress meetings may be arranged. The placement supervisor (Social Work - specialist placement supervisor from different profession to nursing): directly supervises the student in the required activities that address the specified learning outcomes related to the specialist experience. assesses component skills directly related to the professional s own area of competence and scope of practice. The placement must be overseen by a NMC registrant mentor or practice teacher with due regard who meets with the student and placement supervisor at agreed at agreed predetermined points to monitor the student s achievement in the context of the part of the register that the student intends to enter. Appendix 3a Standards of proficiency for entry to the register. Annexe 3 to NMC circular 07/2007 Professional and ethical practice A. Manage oneself, one s practice, and that of others, in accordance with the NMC code of professional conduct: standards for conduct, performance and ethics, recognising one s own abilities and limitations. 1.
