Retinal Screening Service It is planned to offer a diabetic retinopathy screening service involving a digital photograph of the back of the eye (retina) to all diabetic patients in the coming years. An interim service is in place which offers clinical screening by the doctor who will oversee the diabetic retinopathy screening service in the future. This service is only available for patients of a small number of GP at the moment but all patients will be offered screening when the national diabetic retinopathy screening programme comes into place. Domiciliary Care Allowance This service is provided by the Department of Social Welfare. Parents of diabetic children (or any other condition) are entitled to apply for Domiciliary Care Allowance. 071/9148200 In order to be considered medically eligible the following must be satisfied: the child has a severe disability requiring continual or continuous care and attention substantially in excess of the care and attention normally required by a child of the same age.. The Diabetes Federation of Ireland has a network of support branches throughout the country. The activities of the Federation include dissemination of non-judgmental advice and information through meetings, workshops, seminars and a quarterly magazine. Support through telephone communisation and meetings. Raising awareness of diabetes through running campaigns and lobbying on behalf with diabetes in areas where they are being discriminated.
