FACES OF DISTANCE EDUCATION For this month s newsletter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Marcia Schulmeister Dr. Marcia Schulmeister is an associate professor for the physical sciences department. She received her B.S. in Geology from the University of Illinois, her MS in Geology/ Geochemistry from Michigan State University, and her Ph. D. in Geology/Hydrogeology from the University of Kansas. Dr. Schulmeister s favorite part of teaching ESU distance students is the Wide range of diversity in age, experience, and interests. She enjoys conducting M.S. and undergraduate theses and research projects with students all over the world. Dr. Marcia Schulmeister My research focus is in hydrogeology and geochemistry of natural and contaminated groundwater systems. My students and I have worked all over the U.S., in China, and most recently, in Thailand. Associate Professor mschulme@emporia.edu In her free time, she likes to go bicycling, camping, kayaking and rock collecting! Dr. Schulmeister s advice for distance students: Don t be afraid to email your instructor and classmates. Good contacts can be made in online classes. 7
FACES OF DISTANCE EDUCATION For this month s newsletter, we had the pleasure of interviewing student, Anita Fuller. Anita Fuller is a senior majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies. She received her Associate of Arts from Johnson County Community College and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Anita is planning to graduate from ESU in May of 2014 Anita is from the Kansas City area and gave Wichita a try for about 2 years, but then decided to move back. She currently works at Overland Solutions and is a Premium Audit Tech. The BID Program is specially designed to offer an Inter-disciplinary rather than single discipline degree, so I m able to learn about multiple interests and have a more world view of issues. Anita s favorite class was Environmental Issues Clashing Views. The course opened my eyes to environmental issues that I wasn t previously aware of. Since I took it as an on-line course, there was ample opportunity for other classmates and myself to post our observations and opinions as well as respond to each others. I think this course was probably the most enlightening class that I ve taken since being enrolled at ESU! Anita leads a very busy life. In her free time she enjoys gardening, fishing, boating and photography/ photo imaging. With 3 kids, 3 grandkids, and a fulltime job going to school is a handful but worth every minute! Knowledge is the greatest accomplishment one can give to themself and ESU is an awesome college to obtain it from. Anita Fuller Student of Interdisciplinary Studies Anita s advice for distance students: I d like to encourage everyone that s younger than me (which is most, I m sure) to continue to finish your education now it s much more difficult later on. 8
