RSA 2000 Section 2 EMBLEMS OF ALBERTA ACT (i.1) the provincial shield of Alberta; (ii) the Flag of Alberta; (iii) the floral emblem of Alberta; (iii.1) the official grass of Alberta; (iv) the Alberta Tartan; (v) the Alberta Dress Tartan; (vi) the official bird of Alberta; (vii) the official stone of Alberta; (viii) the official tree of Alberta; (ix) the official colours of Alberta; (x) the official mammal of Alberta; (xi) the official fish of Alberta; (xii) an Alberta symbol of distinction. RSA 2000 ce-6 s1;2003 c4 s2;2007 c5 s2; 2013 c10 s2 Armorial Bearings of Alberta Armorial bearings 2 The armorial bearings of Alberta are those described as follows: ARMS Azure, in front of a range of snow mountains proper a range of hills Vert, in base a wheat field surmounted by a prairie both also proper, on a chief Argent a St. George s Cross. CREST On a Helm with a Wreath Argent and Gules a Beaver couchant upholding on its back the Royal Crown both proper. SUPPORTERS On the dexter side a Lion Or armed and langued Gules and on the sinister side a Pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana) proper the Compartment comprising a grassy mount with the Floral emblem of the Province of Alberta the Wild Rose (Rosa acicularis) growing therefrom proper. 2

RSA 2000 Section 2.1 EMBLEMS OF ALBERTA ACT MOTTO FORTIS ET LIBER RSA 1980 ce-8 s2 Provincial Shield of Alberta Provincial shield 2.1 The portion of the armorial bearings of Alberta consisting of the ARMS described in section 2 is hereby adopted as the provincial shield of Alberta. 2013 c10 s2 Flag of Alberta Flag of Alberta 3(1) A blue flag with the provincial shield centred on it is hereby appointed and declared as the Flag of Alberta. (2) The Flag shall be of the proportions 2 by length and one by width. (3) The blue of the Flag shall be a shade of blue conforming with the Canadian General Standards Board, Specification 1-GP-12c-P.II, 1965: Standard paint colour-blue 202-101. (4) The provincial shield centred on the Flag shall extend to 7/11 of the width of the flag. RSA 2000 ce-6 s3;2013 c10 s2 Floral Emblem Rose as floral emblem 4 The flower known botanically as Rosa acicularis and popularly called the wild rose is hereby adopted as the floral emblem of Alberta. RSA 1980 ce-8 s4 Grass Emblem Rough Fescue as grass emblem 4.1 The grass known botanically as Festuca scabrella and popularly known as rough fescue is hereby adopted as the grass emblem of Alberta. 2003 c4 s3 Alberta Tartan and Alberta Dress Tartan Patterns 5(1) The Alberta Tartan and the Alberta Dress Tartan are hereby adopted as the official tartans of Alberta. 3

RSA 2000 Section 5 EMBLEMS OF ALBERTA ACT (2) The Alberta Tartan shall be woven in blocks as follows: (a) the first block, to be known as the green block, shall consist of 48 green threads. (b) the 2nd block, to be known as the yellow block, shall consist of 64 threads divided in the following manner: (i) 4 black; (ii) 4 pink; (iii) 4 black; (iv) 8 blue; (v) 4 black; (vi) 16 yellow; (vii) 4 black; (viii) 8 blue; (ix) 4 black; (x) 4 pink; (xi) 4 black. (c) the green block and the yellow block shall alternate across the entire width of the material and shall follow the same sequence in the length. (3) The Alberta Dress Tartan shall be woven in blocks as follows: (a) the first block, to be known as the white block, shall consist of 96 threads divided in the following manner: (i) 38 white; (ii) 6 green; (iii) 8 white; (iv) 6 green; (v) 38 white; 4

RSA 2000 Section 5 EMBLEMS OF ALBERTA ACT (b) the 2nd block, to be known as the coloured block, shall consist of 136 threads divided in the following manner: (i) 16 green; (ii) 2 black; (iii) 8 red; (iv) 2 black; (v) 36 blue; (vi) 2 black; (vii) 4 yellow; (viii) 2 black; (ix) 36 blue; (x) 2 black; (xi) 8 red; (xii) 2 black; (xiii) 16 green; (c) the white block and the coloured block shall alternate across the entire width of the material and shall follow the same sequence in length. (4) For the purposes of this Act, (a) Alberta Tartan means cloth woven in accordance with subsection (2) and the coloured pattern or design created by so weaving cloth; (b) Alberta Dress Tartan means cloth woven in accordance with subsection (3) and the coloured pattern or design created by so weaving cloth. RSA 2000 Section 6 EMBLEMS OF ALBERTA ACT Bird of Alberta Official bird 6 The bird known scientifically as Bubo virginianus and commonly known as the great horned owl is hereby adopted as the official bird of Alberta. RSA 1980 ce-8 s6 Stone of Alberta Official stone 7 The substance known scientifically as silicified wood and commonly known as petrified wood is hereby adopted as the official stone of Alberta. RSA 1980 ce-8 s7 Tree of Alberta Official tree 8 The tree known scientifically as Pinus contorta variety latifolia and commonly known as lodgepole pine is hereby adopted as the official tree of Alberta. 1984 c15 s3 Provincial Colours Official colours 9 The following colours are hereby adopted as the official provincial colours: blue Canadian General Standards Board, standard 1-GP-12c, 202-101 gold/deep yellow Canadian General Standards Board, standard 1-GP-12c, 505-311 1984 c15 s3;1987 c21 s3 Mammal of Alberta Official mammal 10 The mammal known scientifically as Ovis canadensis and commonly known as the Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep is hereby adopted as the official mammal of Alberta. 1989 c12 s3 6

RSA 2000 Section 11 EMBLEMS OF ALBERTA ACT Fish of Alberta Official fish 11 The fish known scientifically as Salvelinus confluentus and commonly known as the Bull Trout is hereby adopted as the official fish of Alberta. 1995 c12 s3 Alberta Symbols of Distinction Symbols of distinction 11.1(1) The Lieutenant Governor in Council may, in accordance with the criteria established by the regulations, prescribe as an Alberta symbol of distinction any thing that symbolically represents or recognizes a cultural group that has contributed to Alberta s culturally diverse society. (2) The Lieutenant Governor in Council may make regulations prescribing Alberta symbols of distinction and establishing the criteria for the purpose of prescribing them. 2007 c5 s3 General Regulations 12 The Minister may make regulations respecting the reproduction, use and display, or any of them, of an official emblem or any portion of an official emblem. RSA 2000 ce-6 s12;2013 c10 s2 Offence and penalty 13 A person who contravenes a regulation made under section 12 is guilty of an offence and liable to a fine of not more than $1000. RSA 2000 ce-6 s13;2013 c10 s2 Misuse of official emblem 14 If a person reproduces, uses or displays an official emblem or any portion of an official emblem, the reproduction, use or display of which is governed by a regulation made under section 12, in a manner other than that permitted under the regulation, the Minister may, whether or not that person has been prosecuted under this Act, apply to the Court of Queen s Bench for an order enjoining the person from reproducing, using or displaying the official emblem or any portion of the official emblem in a manner other than that permitted under the regulation.
