The rotation program has allowed me to try a variety of work in the corporate, tax and real estate departments. This invaluable experience has enabled me to make an informed decision in choosing my area of practice. BRENNA GREGORY Real Estate Associate, The office s summer program offers law students the opportunity to gain an understanding of our practice through comprehensive hands-on experience. Our summer program has been ranked number one in Orange County by The American Lawyer for the past three years. Summer associates receive work assignments that are part of the daily client work of the office from a variety of practice areas. Additionally, summer associates have the opportunity to attend out-of-office experiences, including depositions, federal and state court hearings, corporate negotiations and client meetings. Some of the office s clients host the summer associates at their corporate headquarters. For example, a visit to the Callaway Golf Company includes meeting with the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Legal Officer, touring the research & development and manufacturing facilities, testing equipment at the test range, and having lunch with the Legal Department members to discuss protection of intellectual property. A visit to the Allergan, Inc. corporate campus includes a meeting and presentation with the general counsel. Some of the recent summer program social activities have included an annual overnight trip to Catalina Island, evenings at Hotel Laguna overlooking the Pacific Ocean, surfing lessons, an evening in the firm s suite at an Anaheim Angels game, attending theatre perfomance at the Performing Arts Center, a yacht cruise in Newport Harbor, a day at the races at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, an afternoon at the J. Paul Getty Museum, and lunch at the execlusive Club 33 at Disneyland. Associates in the office are given a wide range of responsibilities early on in their careers. They appear in courts nationwide and handle a number of local, national, and international matters. Litigation associates in have first chaired trials in state and federal courts and most have first-, second- or third-chair trial experience. Mid- to senior-level associates often have primary responsibility for running corporate deals, i.e., they negotiate and document mergers and acquisitions and securities offerings. The associates receive training opportunities in a number of areas. New associates attend litigation training presented by partners on such topics as depositions, legal writing, discovery, jury trials, and an overview of trial preparation. In addition, litigation associates attend training programs offered by the National Institute of Trial Advocacy for training in deposition skills and trial advocacy. litigation associates also have the opportunity to participate in the Trial Attorney Partnership training program offered by the District Attorney s office, where associates spend two months prosecuting criminal cases for the District Attorney. In addition to the firm-wide training opportunities, corporate associates attend the Orange County office s annual corporate department training retreat. Many of the corporate associates attend the Securities Regulation Institute presented by the Corporate Counsel Center of Northwestern University School of Law. The corporate department also hosts monthly departmental lunches with speakers on relevant topics.

They solicit local practicing attorneys to donate their time to help with PLC s long list of clients in need of legal representation. These clients range from monolingual Spanish speaking parents locked in custody battles to local nonprofit organizations seeking a full range of corporate legal advice. Each year, Gibson Dunn attorneys accept a number of cases from the Public Law Center. A recent example involved attorneys representing a group of low-income families living in substandard housing in Santa Ana. The Gibson Dunn attorneys successfully obtained a court order putting the property in receivership so that long overdue repairs, which the landlord refused to make, could be completed.
